has anybody tried Lecithin? the guy at the healthstore recommended it with the niacin to help the liver out. I did a search on the internet and it says it helps reduce cholesterol. I am giving it a try.

Also, tonight on Primetime is a story about unnecessary surgeries. Since we Love and Respect Dr's around here, I thought it might be of intrest. I plan to watch it.

pslam,

I've taken lecithin off and on for 30 years. I started when I read Adele Davis who swore by it as a way of keeping fat from accumulating in livers, especially in heavy drinkers (which i was.)
Claims for the benefits of phospholipids are EVERYWHERE on the net.
I've been religious about a Tbsp a day (granular) for 4 years now (with my cod liver oil.) It's cheap and delicious (Puritan Pride is the cheapest souce I've found.) The only slightly annoying aspect is it's tendency to paste to the teeth.:D Take BEFORE brushing! I used to buy it as a liquid in a can but I don't think it's around that way anymore. Horse capsules are available but expensive to take that way.

It is a potent fat emulsifier and it seems to be implicated in HDL synthesis (hazy here.)

I have GREAT faith in it (and I'm not much one for faith! ;) )

ok zip, here is another question for you. I started to take niacin yesterday. I got the regular as opposed to the flush free because I have read on these boards that the regular is better for cholesterol. I expected to get this annoying flush and I didnt. Is that a good thing? Do I need more in my system to experience it? If it will work without me getting the flush, Great! What do you think?

Psalm91,

I believe the liquid lecithin is still available, but I wouldn't recommend it. I tried it once, but never again. I used to take a tablespoon or two, and it would stick to the roof of my mouth like glue! On top of that, after each use, I used to have to scrub the spoon clean with cleanser to clean it off. I could hardly wait to finish that bottle. Stick (no pun intended) with the granular lecithin. It's far more convenient to use.

Believe it or not, not everyone will flush from niacin. On the other hand, it can be an extremely unpleasant experience for others. As for myself, sometimes I'll experience a flushing sensation, and sometimes I won't notice anything, and I've been taking it for nearly 20 years.

Thanks Arizona! I have the capsule of the lecithin. I saw the granulars at the store too. How do you take the granules? Everything I have read has been positive about the lecithin. sounds like a great lifestyle choice. I would LOVE to be blessed with not flushing. I didnt flush tonight either-yea!!!

Usually, I'll just take two tablespoons of lecithin after a meal with a glass of water. Sometimes I'll take it after breakfast, and other times I'll take it after dinner. I don't think it really matters which time of day you take it.

As far as the niacin is concerned, what dosage are you taking? I usually take 250mg four times a day. I take one after breakfast, one after lunch, one after dinner, and another one a couple of hours later. I also have on hand a bottle of the Twinlab flush-free niacin (640mg per capsule) which I sometimes take twice per day. But, for the most part, I'm still using the plain old immediate release nicotinic acid, which is much cheaper. And, to tell you the truth, I've been taking it for so long that I really no longer mind the occasional flush. I guess I'm just used to it.

pslam,

I'm curious how much Niacin you're taking. Usually the good lipid results are achieved with 1000 mg or more a day.
If I were you and DIDN'T get a flush from niacin at that dose, I'd expect a possible shortchanging and try another brand just for safety sake. If two no-flushes at 1000 mg, I'd assume I'm luckier than most.

(All that is hypothetical, because with 1000 mg of niacin, I'd personally be in intensive care!)

Oh yeah,
I take a slightly rounded Tbsp of granular lecithin a day....maybe an actual 1.5 Tbsp....like 10 grams (so you can see how large a supply of capsules you'd have to down to get this amount...like 10?!!!

Hi guys, I am only taking 100mg , which says 500% of the daily dose. Boy! I need a 1000mg? The guy at the health store warned me about the liver damage. So i am being conservative. Thats when he recommended the lecithin too. The lecithin is 1200mg for one soft gel. Also my stools have been very soft the last two days. Sorry to be gross, but could it be the lecithin? How much of niacin and lecithin do I really need to make a difference in my ldl?

psalm I have a question about the liver? You said at your first post that this is good for the liver so why did the healthfood guy say it could cause damage to the liver. I was just going to go out and buy this and I read your post. I cannot risk anything harming my liver since I have already been diagnosed with a fatty liver..i hate doctors and meds so I'm trying to look for healthier alternatives to drugs they perscribe for me..thanks, Lisa

Yeah pslam,

AHAH, NOW I understand your lack of flush symptoms!
That 100 mg Niacin is 500% of the RDA for prevention of Pellagra (really). For Lipid control you really need at least 1000mg (and you WILL get a flush!!!). It's no longer a vitamin at these doses but rather very much a drug.
Take the 100mg for a week and then 200 for a week and work your way up to 1000. That might minimize the flush torture.

Lisa,
It's the lecithin that's good for the liver and the niacin that can be hard on the liver (with annual liver test recommended.)
