This is the only med that has really helped my anxiety. hilery kimma5202 03-22-2004, 11:18 PM Hi Helen, I also take Valium(diazapam) on an as needed basis for anxiety. This is the only med that has really helped my anxiety. hilery i have had panic attacks where xanax didnt help at all...even 1mg (my usual dose is .5mgs) i wonder if valium would work better, have u tried xanax for anxiety??? dont get me wrong xanax works alot better than anything i have taken for my anxiety and works the majority of the time, but it doesnt put me to sleep like it used to, and there have been rare occasions when it didnt help my panic attacks at all. kim hilery79 03-22-2004, 11:31 PM Hi Kim, Yes, I have also tried xanax and ativan for my panic/anxiety, but neither one of these meds helped my symptoms all that much. I actually felt a little more anxious after taking xanax for a couple days because it seemed to make my lightheadedness a lot worse. On the other hand, my dad has taken xanax for years and it always stops his panic attacks. It's funny how meds effect people differently. hilery zip2play 03-23-2004, 09:13 AM Helen, I think that diazepam is the single best anti-anxiety agent in the marketplace. It is gentle and doesn't wear off too quickly and CAUSE panic (like ativan does.) I use it to get me over life's "tough spots." It's one of the few drugs that I've taken over the years (and I've had a few!:D) that just FEELS good! A nice side effect is that it's a pretty good muscle relaxant....helpful with dodgy backs and necks. It doubles as a gentle sleeping agent (at 10 mg.). I think it's gone out of faveor for two reasons: 1. It's too cheap. 2. It works too well (and thus it gets abused by the foolish.) I had a friend a zillion years ago who never went ANYWHERE without 10mg Valium and 2 quick martinis beforehand! (Don't try this at home :nono: ) You first notice the main effect after about three days when you first say: "Gee, I forgot to WORRY about that!"....Nice! hilery79 03-23-2004, 12:50 PM Hi, I just wanted to add to what zip said. :) One of the reasons why my Dr. prescribed Valium for me was for my tension headaches. I have tried every over the counter pain medicine out there and nothing takes away these horrible headaches. I take 5mg of Valium and my headache goes away within 15 minutes. So, it's definatly a 2 in 1 drug for me. :D Wizzer 01-07-2007, 02:29 AM I had successfully used Valium for 31 years taking 1 5mg tablet 3 times a day in conjuntion with Inderol (my diagnosis was hypertension, ptsd, and anxiety) This was most effective for the enitre period and I was able to function normally! ( what is normal?) I worked underground in a coal mine using heavy machinery and also was licenced to work on high voltage power. I also worked as an electrical engineer where I typically drove my car 6 hours a day visiting remote locations. Then I worked as a police officer. At no time did the drugs I was taking interfere with my job performance. In fact just the opposite is true, if I did not take the drugs my perfomance levels suffered. We must all understand that we are all individuals and if these or any other drugs do not work for you , keep pushing to find something else. The reverse is true as well, I have moved to Australia and for some strange reason the medical profession here will NOT prescribe Valium. As a result, I have suffered in my opinion needlessly as I feel I am back to where i was 31 years ago. The same symptoms I started with and now more as the drugs I am now on are giving me nightmares, sweats, weight gain and diahorrea. Connie122516 01-07-2007, 11:56 AM Not much to add to what others have said, except to say that my Dad was prescribed diazepam/Valium when he was diagnosed with heart disease...he died in early 1973; can't remember how long he took it before he died...so it has been in use for many, many years. It is quite safe and effective when taken as prescribed. It is possible to become dependent upon it, and some people do abuse it, so that may be why they're reluctant in Australia. A lot of doctors here in the U.S. longer use it as frequently as they used to, probably because of these reasons and the fact there are newer, more expensive (though not necessarily as effective) meds pushed by the drug companies. I can't get on an airplane without it. And it is far more effective, with fewer side effects, than the med prescribed for me when they decided the increased anxiety I experienced after having a stent placed in one of my coronary arteries was in need of treatment. I rarely take it, but it's nice to have around when needed. deen44 04-08-2007, 08:50 AM The nice thing about Valium, after years of studying it's pharmacology, is that it's quickly broken down in the body to active metabolites that have long half lifes of up to 200 hours, so if you take a low dose everyday, there is always a steady-state amount in the body. You don't get the ups and downs like the short acting benzos. They use Valium for weaning people off other benzos, such as Xanax, also. |
