I am a 19 year old male. I started smoking weed at about 14 and at times I would smoke daily. After 3 or 4 years of smoking I started having trouble breathing, especially in the mornings so I Quit. I went to the doctors and he had me blown into this thing and he said I was fine. THey also took X-rays and said I was fine. About 3 weeks of not smoking I could breathe perfect. Now, a year later, I had a ciggarette the other day and Im having trouble breathing again. Its like half way through my breath(breathing in) it feels like theres a hole in my lung and the air is going somewhere else. Even second hand smoke will trigger this. I dont have trouble breathing when I run or do other activities. Just smoke. Could this be Emphysema?

Wow.

Nobody here can diagnose you, really. Though I can talk about what emphysema IS, exactly.

Emphysema is a set of structural changes in the lung that makes them way floppier, and makes it harder for you to exhale all the air stuck in your chest (because the airways flop shut and trap the air.)

Emphysema would be visible on a pulmonary function test, which might not be such a bad thing to ask your doctor about, especially if you are this badly concerned.

It's possible it could just be an allergy, or something benign like that. Get it checked out and please don't try to self-diagnose on the internet.

Whats a pulmonary function test?

A test, typically done in a lab, that measures the specific characteristics of your lungs and compares them to known normals for a person similar to you in age, gender, height, and sometimes weight.

It's a little more complex than the doctor's office blow-in-this-tube test.
