I've consulted with quite a few of NY surgeons. Over the years, my consultations have included Dr. Dennis Barek, Dr. Thomas Romo, Dr. David Antell, Dr. Howard Bellin, Dr. Nicolas Tabbal, Dr. Steven Pearlman, Dr. Andrew Kornstein and Dr. Minas Constantinidas.
Dr. Barek - minimal photos of african-americans, suggested using goretex implant to add projection to tip, suggested using closed approach. Total $5800
Dr. Romo - never saw any pictures, seem to be knowledgeable of the african-american anatomy. Never received any positive input on this doctor. Did not receive estimate.
Dr. Antell - pictures of african-americans was horrible, they all had a very aesthic outcome, suggested using the closed approach. Total $4000.
Dr. Bellin - praised himself as being the best on the east coast and perhaps the best period @ rhinoplasty. Claimed I had deviated septum and proclaimed that my insurance would cover the entire procedure. Pictures of african-americans were average to mediocre.
Dr. Tabbal - saw one picture of an african-american, her outcome was pleasing, however, met with one of his patients, saw her outcome and it was phenomenal in person. No scarring. Suggested open approach using grafts. Total $9700.
Dr. Pearlman - saw two three pictures of african-americans, their outcome was pleasing, one was phenomenal. Suggest closed approach using grafts. Total $8600 including insurance coverage.
Dr. Kornstein - saw 2 pictures of his patients, met with two. I will only comment on one patient, and that patient I was not thrill by her work. It was mediocre. Suggested closed approach. Total $8100.
Dr. Constantinidas - saw 2 pictures of his patients. His work seems to be conservative, suggested open approach (only performs open).
From my understanding, performing the open approach on african-americans is best to give a better anatomical view of the nasal anatomy especially when sutering grafts and etc. However, why are there never more than 2 photos to few?

I watch a lot of shows on television about surgeries, gone wrong, gone well, all of that. I didn't realize until then that rhino for an African-American is basically a field all in itself. I've seen a few Af-Ams on television, and thankfully, they had doctors who SPECIALIZED in rhino for Af-Ams. These doctors were, of course, in California and other places, not on the East Coast. I think that it would be wonderful for someone on the East Coast to find a doctor there as well, but when it comes to plastic surgery, I don't think that anyone shoud settle for a doctor with minimal pictures or mediocre work or references. It just shouldn't be! lol So, from the looks of those doctors that you named, I think that Dr. Tabbal would be the best bet, despite his/her lack of pictures. If this doc had more pictures and/or referrences, I would definetly have my work done by them providing that the other work I see is the same as the picture and person you saw. Money can also be no object in looking for a plastic surgeon, you just can't bargain your life! ;)
