I get 'skipped beats off and on throughout the day, I can deal with them but what bothers me is occassionally I get this really weird beat-it almost feels like my heart has stopped. It lasts about 2-3 seconds and makes me feel horrible. I had one tonight and I feel sick to my stomach now, I think I panicked a bit because I felt a sudden surge of adrenaline.
What are these beats called and what can you do about them? I have had these for a couple of years and have worn holter monitor, ekg, echo etc and nobody ever says anything about them-but I always think my heart isn't going to start beating again.
Thanks

Hi there, We seem to have a lot in common with our hearts. I know exactly what you are talking about. It doesn't feel like the normal flutter it feels like my heart stopped! Those ones scare me the most. I also get pauses when I take my bp but it is a totally different feeling. I have had people tell me that they are just PVC's but that is hard to believe. I go to my EP today and I wrote down a bunch of questions to ask him. If I find anything out I will let you know. :D

Hi there, I just thought I would give you the answer I got from my EP. I told him that I get a strong flutter and then it feels like my heart stopped. This is the way he explained it. When you have a premature beat, there is a pause before the next beat because there was supposed to be a regular beat in there. Well if you have 2-3 pvc's in a row, then that pause is about 2to3 beats long. So that explains why the flutter is stronger and also why it feels like it has stopped. I dont want to assume that this is your problem, but I know how aggravating this can be so I was hoping that maybe this would give some peace of mind.

This scares/bothers me alot too... I have the same thing. It doesn't happen alot... but when it does it really makes you scared. I feel awful and sickish when it happens too. Everyone thinks I am just paying too much attention to my skipped beats, but I try to explain they don't feel like normal skipped beats. I would tell my doctor I am worried about my heart stopping and he is always like "no no no... you are fine!". Thanks for posting about what your doctor said... it helps me as it sounds something like what I have. My doctor never mentioned that.

I'm not sure if you're experiencing the same feeling as I am, but thought I would share my experience with you. I really don't have irregular heart beats, I just have forceful ones many, many times a day. It does feel like my heart has stopped, but more like it's having to force the next beat out. My doctor told me that many women around my age group (30 to 40) experience a weakened heart valve. What this means is that a healthy heart valve allows a one way blood flow through your heart, but a weakened heart valve (which is a weakened muscle) allows a back flow of blood which creates a forceful heart beat. He did tell me that this is not dangerous and not to worry. Hope this help.....
