My husband is 39 will be 40 in a few months. The problem

started about 1 year ago after some dental work. He had

a lymph node in his neck swell to the size of a large egg.

He thought it was due to the dental work since his tooth

he had filled was still bothering him and it was under the

jaw same side as the dental work. With in a few weeks the

swelling went away. A few months passed and the lymph

node swelled again. Like the previous time the tooth was

hurting and again after a few weeks the node was back to

normal size. About 4 to 5 weeks ago my entire family had

a flu/cold cough,high fevers,congestion and 2 of my 4

children had strep throat. My husband had a seizure which

he has never had one before. We assumed it was due to

the flu and him having a high fever. Then his lymph node

swelled again but this time it is the size of a baseball.

He also had one night he woke up vomitting and he rarely

vommits and headaches, eye pain and the same tooth

was causing pain. He finaly got to were the pain was to

much and went to the ER 6 days ago. They put him on

antibiotic's and motrin checked his blood. The blood work

came back 100% normal and he had a normal temp. The

ER doc called it acute submandibular mass and said he

needed follow up care Mon. We went in to the doc's Mon.

by this time the swelling had went down like 20% still a

huge mass the doctor was amazed at its size. He said it

may be mono or even cancer he wants to wait a week or

so to see if the mass shrinks. Then if not begin testing but

my husband would not let me tell the doc about the seizure

or the 1 night he vommited because he said it was not

related to the enlarged lymph node. I have noticed an

increase in him being more tired but that could go along

with mono or cancer. What worries me it may be cancer

that has spread he is a smoker and the doc said lymphomia

or possible spreading of cancer from somewhere else.

I have been searching the web like crazy and now wonder

with the seizure and vommiting if maybe brain cancer?

I am a wreck and grasping for any info. Anyone that can

help or offer suggestions would be deeply grateful. Haylee

Hi Haylee,
What kind of dental work did your husband have on that tooth? Did the dentist x-ray the tooth to see what is going on? It seems a little odd that a doctor would tell you that he may have mono or cancer with no testing/exam/x-ray to back that up. If the tooth was deeply decayed or he had a root canal on it, it can be very possible that there is an infection that is causing an abcess that would then infect his glands. I would get him to the dentist as soon as possible and let him examine him and take x-rays to determine if it is the tooth that is causing this problem. Any untreated severe infection will cause someone to be very tired....and any severe infection could cause someone to have headaches and vomit. Best of luck, Claudia

Claudia ty for the reply I am to confused by the medical

advice we have been given. We went to the best ER in are

city infact it is one of the best in are state. Then two doc's

looked at him on Monday. I think they are guessing mono

because of my childrens strep throats and my husband

having a bad virus as well which he to had a sore throat.

He said if the node had not shrunk in a week or so it could

possibly be lymphomia or another cancer that had spread

to the node. My husband mentioned the dental work it

was just a filling but the tooth was really bad and my

husband said it just did not seem to feel normal right

after getting the feeling. Are family MD looked at the tooth

and said it looked ok and doubted it would cause the

lymph node to swell the big. Maybe I am just wishing to

hard but after he woke this morning it appears to be alittle

smaller. Hubby said it feels abit smaller to him as well.

the doc measured it and said if it went down in size he

would not need to run test but if it stayed the same he

was talking MRI ...I do not even know what that is anyone?

A scan of the neck and a biopsy. Does anyone know if flu's

with high fever 102.4 can cause a seizure? The fact he had

a seizure and would not tell the doc has me concerned.

The fact this lymph node has swelled up three times this

year and two times went back to normal I thought was a

good sign it would not be cancer but the doctor did not

seem to agree. It all just seemed odd this last time that

my entire family was fighting the flu/ cold when all this

occured with hubby him to having the flu virus. It seemed

to me it would be connected with the virus. I dont think

that doctor ever seen a node this big it really was the size

of a baseball if not alittle bigger. Not sure if just a flu

could cause this the doc says mono or cancer like there

is no other possibilitys. The wait and worry is driving me

insane. Something else I wanted to add before closing

my husband said he had a terrible taste in his mouth today

when he woke up and I remember the doc asking if this

mass was draining. Hubby said no but could this bad taste

indicate it may be draining? Could be why it looks abit

smaller and if it is draining could that be dangerous?

Hi Haylee,
A terrible taste in your husbands mouth would certainly indicate that he may very welll have an abcess in the tooth that was filled. The draining would not be dangerous...all it would indicate is that there is no where else for the puss to go, so now it will leak out through the source (into the mouth). The puss has a terrible taste to it. And yes, it would look smaller because the puss has been released out. PLEASE get your husband to a dentist as soon as possible. I am not a dentist, but am a hygienist after first working as a dental assitant for many years.....please try the dentist first, so that it can be ruled out before you put yourselves through anymore upsetment. Best of luck, Claudia

Claudia think you are 100% right it sure could not hurt

him to go to the dentist. Do you know if it is a dental

caused abcess does it make sense to you that this node

has went up and down? One other thing he was put on

keflex at the ER would that type of antibiotic work on a

abcess? Haylee

Hi Haylee,
Absolutely the node would go up and down, because it would be forced to drain itself from time to time. It is good that he has started on the Keflex, as if the infection is severe the dentist would start him on one as well. But the only way to relieve and heal this abcess if for the dentist to open his tooth and do a root canal. Since this has been going on for about a year, it may be a bit more complicated to resolve this by just root canal. If this abcess is large and persistant he may also need to have an apicoectomy. Depending on the situation with the tooth, it may be something that your general dentist cannot take care of in which case he will refer you to an endodontist. And there is always the possibility that the damage is so much that he may loose the tooth.
Let your dentist examine him right away. If this is the problem, it can be handled right away, and your poor husband will not suffer anymore. Atleast you will have an answer right away at the dentist...and if this is not the problem, then you can concentrate on your medical doctors. Best of luck, Claudia

Hi Haylee,
When you call for the appointment, please let the secretary know how much pain and suffering your husband is having...basically tell her it is life or death, or they will put you off. He needs attention right away!!
Thank you for your thoughts, as they are greatly appreciated. When we all reach out and help and support each other it is truly a great gift!
Please come back and let me know how everything turned out. Claudia
