I think for the most part it will go away.

I get IBS mainly with anxiety.... is it anxiety related or just something in general?

Hate to say this but I've had it since I was in my 30's now I am 50. Got worse over the years. Stress is a major factor. I do have it just about everyday. I take medication that constipates me which is how I live a somewhat normal life. Otherwise I would be in the bathroom for a good part of the day. Before I travel anywhere I have to take a pill. Then I get concerned about depending on medication but if I didn't I would not be able to go anywhere. Maybe this is something that goes away for some people but I have not had any luck. It becomes part of your life, unfortunately. You have to fine something that will help with the symptoms.

Good luck and my sympathy for all of you that suffer from this. Until I read this board I never realized how many people suffer from this condition. I am definitely not alone.

IBS is a symptom your body gives you when youre having digestion issues. The Digestion issues are either from diet or stress. If you can get on top of these issues causing it, you can get on top of IBS.

Most of us seem to go through good and bad periods, depending on how well the body is coping at the time.

Hi Cuttie,

I have friends who have had IBS for a year or two, and for whom it has magically gone away. Yet others have had IBS for a long time with no relief in sight. I've had IBS for at least 4 years now :( - at least the serious variety that made me sit up and take notice. Prior to that I had lots of episodes of serious C - and only the occasional 5 minute cramping.

My IBS has subsided since it started thanks to my own flavour of visualisation techniques which I use to help myself - if it hadn't been for these techniques - my IBS would have been quite severe indeed ;). I only occasionally now suffer from temporary bouts of pain - from moderate to severe.

My forays into visualisation techniques has led me to believe that IBS is indeed something that *can* go away with the snap of a finger - but that doesn't necessarily mean that it will go away  . Nevertheless, I still hope that there is a possibility for a better cure than my visual techniques - and I hope that more people don't suffer from this terrible syndrome and that current sufferers lose their IBS.

I hope that if someone does find a reasonably good cure, that brings us back to normal without the extended use of drugs/interventions: I hope they'll share it with us.

Cheers, Raju.

My father in law had it when he was younger, and he has long since gotten over it. He said he got rid of the stress, and it took time to go away, but nevertheless... it DID go away.

WOW!!! It is amazing how much mis/disinformation is out there pertaining to IBD (irritable bowel disease). You first have to get a specific diagnosis. I have Crohn's and have had it for almost 30 years. This has included 2 bowel resections and other surgeries for fistulas, etc. I read whatever I can on the subject and have compiled a mass of information over the years. I have tried various diets, exercise regimens, etc. but these do not "cure" IBD. The latest research on Crohn's seems to say that it is auto-immune related. Remicaid (a drug developed for Rhumatoid arthritis - also an auto-immune related disorder) has slapped my disease into remission in a way I have not seen in decades. Doesn't work for everybody, but I am grateful for it. My point is, do what makes you feel good for sure, but GET A PROPER DIAGNOSIS. This may involve a GI specialist and upper/lower GI series. A GP will not give you a reliable diagnosis.

Just to clarify:
IBS = Irritable Bowel Syndrome (The one most of us have)
IBD = Inflammatory Bowel Disease (i.e. Chron's Disease such as what ecgberht is dealing with)

Two very different animals, remember that IBD is a physical disease whilst IBS can be avoided with the correct changes to diet & stress.

Do you ever get your blood tested for liver functionality? If the liver isn't functioning properly it could cause problems. I'm just curious if they test you first for that before telling you that you have IBS?
