Yesterday...I went in for my pap smear results and I found out that I have chlamydia. I am very scared because I know that this disease can cause infertility in woman. I have taken the a one dose of antiboditc to help cure this..I don't know how long I could have had this maybe for 7 mos. I didn't notice any symptons.......but I have noticed that my menustral period has skipped one month and then this month it hasn't come down at the date it was supposed to. Does that has anything to do with the disease? Also, I have had lower backpains for almost 2 years but I am a overweigh person and these backpains come when I am either doing housework or carrying something that is heavy..The thing is I am scared that I may have damage from this disease and I wanted to know if anybody has encountered this problem with this disease and how long they had it before the realized it has cause infertility damage. Really, I'm just worried and I have only told the person who I know who have given this to me and no one else. Can anybody share their experience with this and leave me in comfort.

You should discuss these questions with your doctor. The disease does not always cause such problems, but speculating here about what may or may not have happened will not change what may or may not have happened to you. If things do not appear normal with you, ask a doctor if thinks chlamydia might be responsible.

In June I was diagnosed w/ chlamydia. I have no idea how long I had it and had no symptoms of it. My period came early and was extremely heavy. I bled for 1 1/2 months and was almost hospitalized for it. I'm sure it was from the chlamydia. My doc said it can live in the cervix for years w/o doing any damage or someone could have it just a few weeks and it do some major damage. I'm no MD but my guess is since you were having no major problems (pain, fever, etc...) that it didn't do much if any damage. Untreated chlamydia can cause PID and untreated PID can cause infertility. Can cause being the key words. It doesn't always. Look up PID on a search engine and read up on it. Your best bet would be a trip back to the doc in a couple months to see if it is gone and to see if any damage was done. Good luck.

BTW........If I were a betting woman I would bet I had it for almost 2 years before it was caught. I had an u/s in Jan and all my reporductive parts are just fine.

Thanks weeping willow for the message. What I wanted to know, when you were first diagnois with this, did you worry alot? Did antiboitics clear this up the first time? How do the doctor determined if it is all cleared up? Actually, I worry alot and I wonder how long I could have had it but I wouldn't say no more than a year. I have to go for a follow up appointment so I will talk to my doctor about these issues. Also, I have had regular menustral periods up until this month and one other month that I have missed, other than that no irregular bleeding or anything. thanks anyway. :)

I had chlamydia for 9 months before i found out because i had no symptoms.. i found out during my yearly pap.

Does anyone know how much damage can be done to both females and males if they've had it for 9 months? does this mean that me and my bf are infertile?

I was devistated when I found out I had it. I felt dirty and scared. I worried constantly about it. It was a relief to find out that the antibots cleared it up on the first round. The doc does another swab to see if the disease is gone. Sometimes it will show up that you have it even after it's gone because you had it before. Just make sure you keep that follow-up.

i was also plagued with this infection.... it is awful, and it does make you feel like a dirty person.. it does make you worry.. etc.... i was diagnosed in march 2002 after having symptoms of abnormal discharge, lower back pain... i only had it for about 3 weeks before it was treated... and had to return to the docs for another round of antibiotics because it wouldn't go away... re-tested again and it was cured.. however, i had abnormal paps ever since until dec 2003... they're finally normal!!!
anyway, i'm now trying to conceive and after 5 cycles have still not gotten pregnant.... (i also got pregnant when i contracted chlamydia and terminated that pregnancy) anyway, next month i go in for an HSG which is xrays to see if my tubes were blocked from chlamydia.. i would count myself as very unlucky if this is the case, seeing that i caught this within weeks of contracting it.... regardless, there's no set "time frame" that you have it where it reeks havoc in your reproductive system... it just depends.. the othe r poster is right though.. chlamydia CAN turn to PID and PID CAN cause damage... my doc told me with every infection ... EVERY infection there is a 7% chance of reduced fertility.... so, i have a 7% chance that my fertility was compromised because of chlamydia....
