I have a question for you guys. I am 47 years old and about 70 lbs. overweight. In spite of that, I feel pretty good even though I am starting to get some arthritis in my knees and have mild asthma. I know I need to get this weight off and am working on that part. However, I have joined a gym and have been working out some lifting weights and walking on the treadmill. I really want to jog/run, which I have been able to do for like 5 minutes at a time and then slow to a walk and run//walk. My heart rate goes up to 170 bpm. and I do get a little breathy. Is it safe for me to do this since I am carrying around so much weight? I know I should be asking my doctor this, but I am anxious to know what you think. I just know if I wasn't carrying so much extra weight, I could do better. Should I just stick to walking until I lose 20 lbs or so? I am so anxious to run. I have never been able to before and even at my age maybe its not impossible???

When anyone runs, they can hit the ground with up to five times their body weight. As you can imagine, this can be hard on the lower back and joints of the lower extremity, and especially for those individuals with joints susceptible to injury.
Out of caution, I would suggest that you start with (brisk) walking and over time, as you get used to things like, how your body feels as you exert yourself, you can then ease into running.
But since you've already started exercising before checking in with your doctor about your exercise capacity and arthritis (eg. effects of the impact of running + body weight on the progression of knee arthritis), etc., how do you feel after a jog/run, besides a little out of breath? If you don't feel like your heart is going to burst or like you're going to die, then you can probably stick with, or modify, your current program. Make sure to have a chat with your doctor!
Although you're anxious to run, it's important to not increase your goals too quickly (eg. the number of minutes you run per week) and never push yourself -- listen to your body and you'll get to that point eventually.
Also, remember to always do some stretches (eg. for calves, quads, hamstrings) before and after you exercise.

We have alot in common. I too am 47 and was 70 lbs overweight. I began working out and eating right Aug. 21, 2003. When I began, running killed my knees so I just walked fast on treadmill (used incline too) and cycled on the bikes. Did this 30-40 minutes 3-5 times each week in addition to weight training. Due to the knee pain I did not run anymore but have been playing raquetball alot. Yesterday I decided to play a little basketball and was amazed at the fact that I can now actually run AND JUMP without the pain. My advice: get rid of the weight first, then try running again.

Apatim,
Thanks for replying. How did you lose your weight and how much have you lost? I want to get the South Beach Diet book and try to follow that. I know that carbs bother me. When I do without the bad carbs I feel so much better. Also, as much I would like to, part of me thinks running might not be as good for me as walking briskly. I don't want to mess up my knees!

The easiest way to lose weight is cycling. It is so much better for your knees and feet. You have a much less chance of injuring yourself. There is nothing worse than finding an exercise you like then having to stop because of injury. I have done the cycling for a good part of my life and have tried running 3 different timed only to hurt my knee all 3 times. I can ride a bike forever and my knees are fine.

I started out by just reducing amounts of calories and working out with weights, etc. After losing 20 lbs, I stopped losing... 8 weeks ago a friend suggested I try the South Beach Diet (I joined the web site... very easy to follow).... I follow it religiously and have been losing about 3 lbs per week since and I FEEL GREAT! I used to get tired in the afternoon and had indigestion/heartburn often. Now I have tons of energy and NEVER get indigestion. I started out at 265 lbs (6' 3" tall) and am, as of yesterday, at 219. My goal is 210 by mid-May and 190 by end of summer.
Good luck, my friend!
