i have a son who is autistic. i also have a disability myself, due to having a childhood illness. i have problems speaking. this can cause quite a few set backs and problems when it comes to bringing up my son.
i would like to hear from anyone who is in the same boat as me, or is disabled and got autistic kids.

Trisha Rose,
I usually go on the Epilepsy board, but came over to Autism looking for pointers that might also help our daughter...she has brain-damage and at 23 yr. (3.5 yr. mentally) has seizures once or twice a week. She is on Felbatol and Neurontin.
To be honest I am drawn to you as my father's side of the family (Ironside clan) were all from around Peterhead, Scotland and I feel a great affinity for your country and it's people.
What problems are you facing as well as those caring for your son?
Marilyn

I myself am not disabled, my husband has dyslexia and my youngest son is Autistic,Celiac Disease,Cerebral Disease and severe cerebral to foods and chemicals.

WHat I thought about is ..have you tried learning sign language or picture therapy? This would make communication MUCH easier.

I hope things work out for you and yours http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

Trisha,

I also have a little boy who is autistic. His name is Blake and he's 4. I have another lil boy who is 1, chase. Anyways I'm 23yrs old and married. I never knew if I had any learning disabilities, but alot of my siblings did. I never heard repetative language before my son, but strangely, I see alot of similiarities between my son and my siblings, even me sometimes. None of us are autistic that we know of, but behavior, shyness, depression, learning disabilities, ADHD, and possibly Bipolar. But i've always wandered with this combination of behaviors if autism runs in my family. I just wanted to write ya to let you know that alot of times when im reading messages on here, i come across parents of autistic children posting messages. Just when you think that taking care of an autistic child is hard enough, most of us got more than just that to worry about. I dont know how some of you do it? Alot of them do, so i wanted to tell you , have faith in God, and alot of us are riding in the same boat. Its good that alot of us are here together. God BLess!
