I have a 4-1/2 year old son with Asperger Syndrome. I am having the hardest time potty training him. He will go if I put him on the potty, but it's like he doesn't know he has to go. He tells me after he poops his pants. I have tried every trick I can think of to get him to go on his own. We have bribed him, we have taken priveledges away from him and nothing seems to work. He will be 5 in June and still in diapers. I welcome any advice anyone can give me on how to get him out of diapers.

Have you tried keeping him in a shirt and naked from the waist down? All of my friends and relatives have used this method to potty train their kids. Everyone told me that kids do not like the mess and will not pee on the floor. I thought there is no way this will work since my little boy had never told me that he had to go potty. The first time I took off his diaper he said mommy I have to go potty. Then every time he would go I would immediately give him candy and make a big deal about it. Most kids will have a couple of accidents, but my son never had an accident when he was naked.
After about 2 weeks of him walking around the house naked I put underwear on and he had about 2 accidents before he got the hang of it. He has been completely potty trained since he was 2 and a half and has never wet the bed. Good Luck!!!!!!!

Actually yes, we have tried that, he held it.

We have never had a problem with him "holding it". My little boy drinks water constantly. I think the best time to try the naked thing for potty training is after they have a lot of liquids. I don't think my son would have ever been potty trained without this method.
They can really sense when they have to go to the bathroom. Leaving them in underwear WILL NOT WORK. Once they get wet with nothing on they do not like it. I would try it again. It can't hurt.

Okay, Abby just pees on the floor. :( She freaked out when that happened, but then did it again. Argh!

Has Abby been peeing on the potty when you put her on? The reason I suggested to Texas Mom about being naked from the waist down is because she said her little boy will go to the bathroom if she puts him on the potty.
My little boy was the same way, but could not sense when he had to go otherwise. I should have wrote that I did not just take off his pants and he started to say I have to use the potty. He had been using the potty every morning after he drank his Vanilla rice milk for about two weeks. After he got in the habit of peeing on the potty then I went to naked from the waist down.

Aaaaaah! No. She hasn't. She loves to go and sit on it though. I guess we'll wait until she makes a little more progress then.

Well, that's a good start. We would put his little training potty in front of the TV and watch a video together. He always drinks two glasses of Vanilla rice milk in the morning and he would just sit there. Of course every time he would pee I would jump up and down and give him kisses and a piece of candy. I would tell him how big he was and how proud I was of him. He loves
attention.
I would always say you are getting this candy because you went pee pee on the potty. The first three times I sat with him for about 70 minutes before he would finally go. But then after he got used to it he would go after he sat on the potty for 2 minutes. It will take a lot of time in the beginning. I remember the first time I waited over an hour and just as I was about to stand up and say forget it, he went. Since Abby likes to sit on the potty you have already won the first battle.

70 minutes?!? Yikes.
Well, if that's what it takes, I guess that's what it takes. Ugh. I am so not patient. This disorder is such a trial for me. I mean I know it is her cross to bear, but I am being forced to learn a character trait that I do not come by honestly. :o
Thanks again for the input and encouragement.

70 minutes is an etenity especially since you have twins. I only have him so I can devote all my time to him. The only thing that gave me hope was that he was successful every time I waited. I am very proud that he was completely potty trained at 2 and a half. A lot of other kids who have no disabilities take a lot longer. I know some SEVEN year olds with no problems and they still wear pull ups at night. When your patience is wearing thin just think of all the money you will save when Abby is out of diapers!!!!
It is very difficult having a child with autism. I do not see how any child with autism could be higher functioning than mine. Since his speech and cognitive abilities are above average, he has no sensory issues, or any fine or gross motor delays and he is extremely social with same age peers. Even though I know that probably 99.5% of children who are diagnosed with autism are much worse off I still get depressed about it. I am really proud of you for getting your daughter so much help. Hopefully the combination of all her therapy's will be just what she needs. It will also be helpful that she has a sister to play with.

Wow. He sounds a lot like Abby, or at least where we think she will be with some intense help. She does have some sensory issues, but not like she could have. She has recently (and I mean in the last two weeks) begun to be very interested in her peers, yay! :) She has a lot of language, though her receptive language still appears to be poor. Her attending stinks too. Her biggest obstacle is tantruming. She goes from fine to full-tilt-boogie in 2 seconds flat and once she is on that level, there is no talking her down. Her behaviors are "complex" according to the therapists working with her. Whatever that means, lol. I just know that life with Abby is very trying at times, a lot of the time. Anyway, I didn't mean to hijack this thread.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Is your son on the gfcf diet? my daughter potty trained immediately after going on the diet it has been suggested that autistic kids cannot break down these protiens and it causes them to be numb to the sensation people feel for going to the bathroom. I thought she would never potty train but that bit of information really made sense since she started telling me right away the she needed to go after being on the diet about a month.

I had E on the GFCF diet for 3 months, and it did nothing for her potty skills. She is currently CF and on reduced gluten.

Thank you for bringing this up!
70 minutes...that's a LOT. I'm happy if I can get him to sit for 5. I've got to figure out a better reward system for him or something, I guess. I KNOW if I could get him to go in the potty once, he'd be able to figure it out.

I totally agree. Once is all it takes. My little guy thought it was so cool!!!! You could tell he was really proud and after I gave him 50 hugs and told him what a big boy he was, he was beaming from ear to ear. My little guy loves lolly pops so that is what I gave him. A lot of moms use M&M's.

We use swedish fish/m&ms/sugar free gum (good for oral development) or anything else from a bowl of goodies (he gets to choose one which he wants). He's verbal, so I ask him what he wants as a reward. McDonalds play area is a bowel movement reward.... but he has only gone once for a BM. Usually he asks to go into the cellar play area where he poops in his pants and then will pull at his pull-up (it's uncomfy finally!). He will adamantly refuse the potty even if I try the "well go use the potty and then can go downstairs".
My son has to pee standing up at home, sitting down at school (they can't get him to stand there, I can't get him to sit at home). He stays dry at school but misses after nap at home.
He can force himself to go (it's funny because he'll try to pee so hard he farts) but he will NOT ask to go, and he will not tell me he needs to go. The best way I've found to get him there.... "I'll race you" or "I bet you can't go pee on the potty by the time I count to 20..."
Maybe some of the ideas that are (so far) working might help others...
A quick side note: Your child will more than likely NOT walk down the aisle to get married wearing a diaper... so it WILL happen eventually.. :-)

Hi I have two boys with Aspergers. My oldest was really hard to train too. He had no desire to use the toilet. He was about to start preschool, and he HAD to be potty trained in order to go. We were in the pet store one day, to get dog food. He spotted little lizards that he really wanted. I explained to him that pets are for big boys that use the potty, and if he would use the potty every time for two weeks, then I would get him TWO lizards. well, I guess all it took was for him to WANT to. I ended up buying the lizards, and never had a problem again. My suggestion.......BRIBERY!! LOL :jester: D&K's mom
