Hello,
I have been wondering if some of you have experienced adhd behavior with your child some of the time while other times he seems calm (without medication). My son seems to be very overactive this week. There has been no changes with medication and diet. All of his therapists have made comments to me since last week in regards to him not being able to focus and sit still. I have tried ritalin with him and I really don't see a night and day difference and it doe's not seem to wire him either. We first started him on 5mg and now he is up to 10mg. I really am confused on this issue. Are the other medications out there for ADHD different than ritalin and if one doe's not seem to work doe's that mean they all will not work?

Rachel,
My son has autism and he was also diagnosed with adhd. I am doing everything meds. free and he has days where he is very calm and others to where he's bouncing off the walls for several days straight. I'm doing Naet treatments on him and through my naet practioner, she discovered he has hyperactivity when he comes in contact with enviromental chemicals, such as glass cleaners, pinesol, paints...etc. last month I painted my room and for a whole week he screamed alot, lost some eye contact temporary, and could not sit still....I finally took him to his naet practioner and she balanced out his body and he was back to being calm. Try and think back to what started your son to become hyper that day.....did you clean house using alot of chemicals, paint, did you barbque (charcle can set my son off), did he eat anything with food dyes, or anything new? If you can think of something he was around that day that he's not around everyday....have him around that substance again and see what happens and then you will know to avoid it.

nicksmom,
I have racked my brain trying to figure it out. This has happened many times but I cannot figure out what is going on. My son has major allergies but we have avoided these items for along time. Maybe it is some new allergy. I often wonder if it is the diet coke. He cannot have regular coke due to the corn syrup. But he has been drinking diet coke for a while and some days he's fine and others he is bouncing off the walls. When you say the doctor "balanced his system" what do you mean?

People who have chronic health problems have an unbalanced body. Accupuncture, accupressure, and many other holistic therapies can balance out your body and make you feel better. Naet (Nambudripad's allergy elimination technique)is a safe, effective, natural approach to detecting and eliminating all types of allergies. Naet combines techniques from kinesiology (muscle strength testing), chiropractic, and oriental medicine, to clear allergic reactions through a "reprogramming" of the brain. The actual technique used involves light acupressure applied along both sides of the spinal column in an area where the energy flow of meridian intersects with the nerve roots. By doing this, it can eliminate allergies permanently. I was very skeptical at first but after a few treatments, I saw some awsome results. One thing that made me a true believer in this was when my son would act up everytime we would go to the practioners office (he was very calm before we would show up). THe second we put him on the table, he would start squiling, and laughing for no reason. I noticed he acted like this whenever he ate sitting on this certin chair we had at home. Anyway, it turned out he was allergic to vinyl! he had the acupressure applied to him while he held vinyl and after that he was calm....he never acts out when he touches vinyl now. If your interested, I found a doctor in your state who has a email and website....I think she's close to your city. Maybe you can email her and ask her about the allergies. I know the moderators will erase it so I'll just post the practioners name,Kimberly Jones, D.C.,
and you can do a search for the naet web site....they have the practioners list on her site. Anyway, I hope you figure out what is making him hyper. Oh, by the way, they do add coloring to alot of sodas and the body was not made to eat artifical sugars...many people have problems to diet drinks...so that could very well be it.

Robin,
Thanks for the information. My son doe's see an allergist once about every three months. We just eliminated the products he is allergic to. No allergy shots. And at the last visit his blood test was in normal range compared to the initial test that was off the scale. The information provided by you sounds interesting. I'm going to check into it. Thanks again.

It is possible to have metalic poisoned system, as with mercury, possibly through dental silver amalgam fillings, which are not pure silver, but are amalgamated with over 50% mercury, which is supposed to be in a solid state after being amalgamated with other metals. However this has been proved untrue. The mercury leaches out into the system for years. Dentists are cautioned to be very careful handling this material in filling or removal. Yet it is supposed to be perfectly safe in the human mouth. Mercury is a deadly poison. One can be exposed to it also through some medications and vacinations, broken fever thermometers, merthialate, broken mercury vapor tubes and etc. A merury toxic body needs to be detoxicfied. Its presence in the body can effect any organ or many. It can cross the blood brain barrier and also cause mental problems.
It is difficult to remove but can be detoxified with DMSA. You might like to learn more by going to the internet --
Mount Rogers Clinic in Troutdale, Virginia with Dr. ElmerCranton M.D. does this testing and detoxification with DMSA. which is able to cross the blood brain barrier.

Perky, your definantly right on the mercury. Most autistic kids have it in there bodies but it's usually not from the silver fillings because our kids (at least mine) didn't become autistic and adhd untill being vaccinated.....there used to be alot of mercury in the shots. Now they only use trace amounts but they still put other metals in the shots such as aluminum. Mercury poision and autism have the same symtoms. I personally believe autism is just a cover up name for mercury poison because the goverment doesn't want people freaking out and stop vaccinating, but then again, that is only my opionion.

Hi Rachel, have you done any new dental work or had his teeth cleaned?
If not I will tell you that Jay can not tolerate diet coke. He also can not tolerate diet sodas that use sucrose instead of asparatime. Has diet coke recently switched to that? I am allerigic to all dark sodas because apparently they can have a low mold count and I can not tolerate mold. mY mouth swells up cracks and bleeds! Jay tolerates the clear low/no sodium carbonated flavored waters with asparatime- he becomes mildly cranky but easily redirected. I am also allergic to corn products as well as Jay. I am also intolerant of eggs and sulfur products and I believe coke may have a sulfur product in it because it causes me to have that nasty rotten egg indigestion breath!

Hey Meme,
I haven't heard from you in a while. No dental work recently. I have taken Jed off of Diet coke. I think diet coke is still made with aspertame. I have been buying sodas at the health food store that are made with pure cane sugar, sodium free, caffine free and no artifical coloring. They taste pretty good. We still are having days where he is bouncing off the wall while others seem to be somewhat calm. The nutritionist has since added salmon oil to his daily diet. I had Jed evaluated for behavior therapy a couple of weeks ago. She seen him when he was really hyper. She mentioned that she thought he has alot of symptoms of ADHD. Needless to say he qualified for behavior services and I'm very hopeful that this will help with the patting of the face and the pouncing on the floors. We shall see. Anyway, how's your son? Are you getting ready for the new school year? Jed will be full day this fall. I'm kind of excited and a little scared all at once. I know he will do well. The lunch issue is going to be a little hard at first since he is soooo limited on foods. How do you handle your sons lunches?

Hi Rachel
Jay is in school now, he is in a 12 month program so he had two weeks off and then began again. After the school tried to stop OT I took him to a hospital for an ot eval and the therapist decided to work with him every week and gave him 'homework' for the first time- he has to write an hour a day. If he still can not write anywhere near age level by september she will give us a recomendation for the school to begin using a scribe (they denied him a scribe in June even though he is still writing below kindergarten level and can not keyboard without and adult sitting with him). His fine motor tested at a 16 year old level, he is only 11 1/2 and he seems comfortable enough to write the individual letters but regresses instantly if asked to write even the simplest words. Apparently there is something called dsygraphia similar to dsylexia but for writing. She also gave me the referal to the pediatric neurologist-(who is actually the person who can diagnois dysgraphia) that I have been begging my pediatrician for over a year for. And a referal to a developmental pediatrician as well. We are on a 9 month waiting list for that! We experimented with glueten caisen and corn foods with digestive enzymes and caisen in small amounts with enzyme he tolerates but anything with corn anything in it is untolerable! Ugh. Over all, his raw testing scores accross the board were only 6 months higher than a year ago though I would have bet money that he had progressed well beyond that, I think they are a reflection of his poor writing not his progress. Especially with a high IQ! He ace's multiple choice tests and spelling tests on the keyboard, though I gather he has similar difficulty with composing on the keyboard as he does trying to figure out what and how to write with paper and pencil.

Meme,
Sounds like Jay is doing wonderful. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the writing will pick up. Jed was tested recently to see if he qualified for behavior therapy. They tried to get and IQ on him but he kept saying "I don't want to play this game". He was very uncooperative and she finally called it off (after 3 hours). We did find out that on vocabulary he scored at a 8 year old level (he is currently 5) but we were unable to do any further testing due to his uncooperation. They did inform me that is adaptive skills were too far behind considering his intelligence and asked me if I babyed him. I do baby him. He is my baby. But, I have got to stop for his sake. Anyway, he doe's qualify for behavior intervention. He is not aggressive or anything like that. He just has some behaviors that draw attention to himself. Like pouncing on the floor (which we have talked about before) and patting his face. He still has temper tandrums in the stores but not as bad as they used to be. Thats really about all. But it sure would be nice for him to stop these. Hopefully, the new behavior therapist will know what to do.
Jed has been in summer school also and regular school will start Aug 14. He is still on the cf/gf diet and still avoiding all the allergy items. Still working with a nutritionist and he just added salmon oil to his diet (omega 3 fatty acids). This is suppose to help ADHD kids. Well see!! Speech continues to pick up! He suprises me all the time with new phrases like "this is awesome", "that's gross", and many more. I hope that the behavior therapy is the missing piece to the puzzle. Wish us luck.

Hi Rachel, I think that people often mistake parenting to children like our sons as babying. I still verbally prompt Jay through the many stages of dressing in the am and it still takes an hour!!!!! Some times if I dont have a half hour to wade through the process of shoe tying I will still do it myself! Jay really truely can not clean or keep his room clean himself!! We have had to eliminate sooo many of his toys and all his clothes and there are not enough hours in the day to pick-up after him or even keep up with the messes he makes, hes cleaning one mess, you send him to the kitchen to get a wash cloth and while your waiting waiting waiting he has completely forgotton why hes out there and made a brand new mess, and when he relizes he needs one more thing for the brand new mess he rummagees through all the draws leaving thier contents strewn accross the floor when he sees the sugar and realizes he's hungry, so he pours the cearal all over the table as well as the sugar(every single time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) he looks for a spoon and remembers he can make music with two of them! it goes on and on and on and then he is truely outraged when you interupt him to actually bring the cloth back to wipe yesterdays snuck bowl of cereal gunk off the bedroom floor 0r out from under the couch!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Meme,
Sounds familiar....except that my 10 year old daughter with no diagnosis of autism or pdd or anything else doe's the same exact things. Sooo I really don't think it has to do with his diagnosis just his age.
