 Hey Everyone....
I've got a question.....Is anyone taking Valtrex as "supressive therapy"? I just started about a month ago and now it's one week before my period and I'm getting the tingling sensations, again. Should I increase my Valtrex dosage to 1,00mg a day, now or won't it make a difference? Anyone familiar with Valtrex, please let me know. Thanks in advance for your responses.

 Hey Ornament! I am a Pharmacy Tech. at a local hospital. I read that during outbreaks, Valtrex can be increased as much as 1,000mg (1 gram) three times daily. But please don't do that right away. LOL. Please just try the 1,000mg/day at first just to see how that works for you.
Also, one very important thing. You need to let your doctor's office know if you're going to increase your dosage during OBs. Why? Because you're going to run out of your pills early, and the pharmacist and/or insurance company may not want to refill it early. The best way to get around that is to let the doctor's office know about it, have them call in a new prescription with new directions to the pharmacy...so that way you're covered whenever it's time for a refill. :)

I am on suppressive therapy and I increase my dose from 500mg to 1000mg a day when i feel those early signs. But I usually do wait at least 12 hours before doing this because a lot of times, i just get one or two "tingles" and then it's gone.
My doctor got around the running out of pills thing by prescribing two 500 mg pills a day (60 a month) that gives me all the freedom I need to adjust the dosage.

Thanks Wennie....
You need to keep posting on this board...occupational hazard, perhaps??? I increased my valtrex to 1000mg., today and I'm feeling better already...My doctor prescribed them as 1,000 mg and I've been breaking them in 1/2, for supressive therapy. When I call his office for an rx., they ask me how I'm taking it and I do my research and tell them how I want to take it..and then they call it in....pretty scary....I'm waiting for my mailorder MD license, to come in the mail any day now. LOL. Thanx and don't go anywhere......smiling, -Orn

LOL. Hey, I'm waiting for my MD too. LOL. I did the same thing with my doctor. I told the charge nurse that I wanted the 500mg tabs qd (daily) x 30 pills with PRN refills (refills for 1 year). It was scary...cuz they did exactly as I asked too. LOL.
Yup, I'm gonna keep posting here, Orn. I learn so much from you guys, and I also like to give back to you guys with whatever input I can from my pharmacy background as well. :) It's a like a circle - we go around and around helping each other...and it feels good to know that I have you guys as my support. You're all awesome. :)
