Ok I Am Confused. I Am 27 And Had My First Abnormal Pap In Dec. I Had The Colp And My Gyn Took 6 Areas That Looked Bad. The Biopsy All Came Back Normal, But My Pap Was Again Mod-sev. She Wanted To Be Sure So She Sent Me To A Oncologist. She Did Another Colposcope And She Took 3 Areas... Again "inconclusive", Tissue Of Biosby Normal, But Pap Mod-severe? So.. I Had A Cone Biopsy Last Tues. I Have Not Had My Post Op, But I Talked To The Nurse And All She Could Say Is That There Were No "high" Levels Of Dysplasia? I Go To My Post Op In A Week And A Half. Any Thoughts???

Anything can cause you to have abnormal pap - lack of folic acid and other nutrients, bad genes, sex before your exam. Have you thought about a 2nd opinion?

Do you think that I chould go to a third Dr.? My current oncologist is one of the best. She specializes in female cancers. Her practice is at OU medical center and she is head of some major researce studies. I think that she is awesome. She is my current second opion. Would anyone go to a third? I feel pretty comfortable with her.

What did the first doctor say, if she is the second opinion?

My first Dr. was my regular gyn. She has been my gyn for 8 years and through all three of my pregnancies. She said the same thing. Severe dysplasia on the pap, but normal biospy. She did the first biospies and pap.

If the biopsies are coming back normal, it's probably ok & the dysplasia will probably correct itself. Most of the time, the dysplasia will correct itself.

Unfortunately, there are no good answers to your question. If you are taking any medications that effect tissue samples, if the samples are mishandled in any way by accident or negligently, if you are in a certain cycle of your menstrual cycle, there are so many reasons why a pap can be abnormal and not be cancer or anything near cancer.
The abnormal pap is getting to where it is the "norm" I had several abnormal paps, one biopsy and one sonogram. Then I decided to forget it. I have had no problems. I have had no further symptoms, I had no symptoms when the paps came back abnormal. The final determiner for me was I took the HPV test and it was normal and that is my definitive answer I do not have the HPV virus and so I will continue to have my paps but I will not be alarmed if they are abnormal. I had two very healthy babies through normal deliveries and I do not expect that any should be wrong now. I have lived a very restricted sex life as well. So there should be no problems from sexually transmitted diseases. There is only so much a person can do. The rest is up to genes and God.

Thanks for the input. I love this message board! You gals are great inspirational tools. I am feeling good about everything. I am just anxious to hear from my oncologist now. I did get something in the mail today from her. It said, "cervical biopsy abnormal without cancer or high levels of dysplasia follow up with pap test every 3 months." I will just keep praising God for keeping my body healthy!!!

Your doctors are doing what is standard treatment in this case. I would definitely follow up if you had a bad pap but nothing showed up in the cone or if the cone only showed CIN I. It might mean that the cone did not get the lesion. Make sure you follow up on this. I'm not sure what your doctor will suggest next but the chances of you having a CIN III pap and no lesion are very, very small. Yes, I agree with the previous poster that abnormal paps can be from a mixture of things but CIN III paps are specifically pointing to dysplastic cells. From all the reading I've done on CIN III, bad paps, one of the most common reasons for following up is when the pap and the biopsies, cone are not within 1 stage of each other. It is especially disconserting when the pap is worse.

Gather up all your prior dysplastic pap slides, your colpo biopsy slides, and your cone biopsy slides and ask that they ALL be reviewed by one pathologist (for comparison and an over time progression analysis). Hopefully your various docs can agree on an expert pathologist (often on in a medical teaching facility). Some of this is a matter of interpretation at the cellular level and it's a good idea to have the same doc (pathologist) looking at everthing. This is actually standard procedure when the biopsy results differ substantially from the pap results. I'm kinda surprised that it hasn't been done.

Good luck!
