thanks carol Aging SUCKS!! lol
The best thing for chronic constipation is a diet change (less processed foods and more fresh veggies). You could also try adding 1-2 tablespoons of flax seed to your daily diet. And magnesium aspartate not only is a bowel relaxer, it's GOOD for you! start with 400mg to a maximum daily dose of 1200mg.
Peri-zappers (from the book, Before the Change, by Ann Louise Gittleman) really helped me control my peri and menopausal symptoms (including joint pain!). I highly recommend it. ;) :D

most of my aches and pains and constipation came from a prescription drug for high cholesterol. I had to quit taking it and everything got better.

Cloverberry: Which Cholesterol drug were you taking? My husband just started taking Crestor and has what we think are side effects from it. He has sore muscles, but just on one side of his body.

I have constipation from Flexeril and no matter how much fiber I eat, I'm still constipated. Last night, I took a stool softener before bed and I was able to go this morning, but I was still straining and it was painful.

Does anyone know if stool softeners are safe to take on a regular basis? I may have to stop taking the Flexeril if things don't improve.

Just got through doing some late night reading over the weekend and it seems that perimenopause/menopause and thyroid disease go hand in hand. Symptoms of peripause will sometimes mask the onset of thyroid disease and constipation is in the top 10 list for thyroid symptoms. Dr. to do my thyroid test this week. I haven't had a period for 14 mos. and that's a good thing but I can't lose weight despite diet and exercise, am having bp problems, constipation, etc. If you look at the list of symptoms for thyroid and perimenopause there's a lot of overlapping. Some of the reports I read said that thyroid problems attack women in the 40- and 50-something range to the tune of 20%. Had no idea it was so common. Doc said something about testing over a year ago and we just never have-I'm always in too big a rush-but this week's the week. cg

Sunshine123 I was taking Zocor for my cholesterol. I was taking 10 mgs for awhile and my back started hurting. I thought it was because of menopause. Then my doctor upped it to 20 mgs and I couldn't walk too much because my back would really start to hurt. Still didn't think it was the cholesterol pills until I quit taking them and my pains went away. My husband take Citrucel everyday but not the full dose. He takes a teaspoonful everyday. I don't know if it's safe but most likely his doctor recommended it. He's not one to do things like that on his own. He doesn't understand how I could stop taking the cholesterol medicine without talking to the doctor.

Hi cloverberry: Thanks for responding. I'm glad you were able to figure out what was causing your pain and stopped taking it. I'm still not sure if the Crestor is causing my husband's muscle pain since he only has it on one side. He said he'll call the Dr. if it continues. Apparantly, it's safe to use a fiber supplement daily. Even with Citrucel, I have to eat a ton of fiber or I can't go.

those papers that come with your prescription drug helped me a lot. One of the side effects said that Zocor could cause muscle weakness. I never thought of the lower back as a muscle but I guess it is. You can ask the pharmacist if they know the posible side effects of a drug. I get my drugs through a mail in pharmacy but I can email them if I have a question.
Do you drink enough water? I've heard water helps with constipation. How about prunes or prune juice? A couple of things that get me going in the morning is coffee or juice with a lot of pulp.

Carol24,

I'm in perimenopause too, but have always been constipated, even as a baby!
The best thing I have ever tried is a chewable sugarfree tablet named "Fiberchoice".
I chew two every night (keep them beside my bed), and my bowels move everyday.

Being a thyroid queen myself back in the 80's, true perimenopause, pms and thyroid condition are so much alike. It is always good to run a thyroid test to see where everything is. If it comes back normal, then you know it's all peri-meno. But even if you were to have a thyroid problem, you will still have the peri-meno. Also, remember that when we go through peri-meno, it plays a significant role on the thyroid. So your tests may come back normal but you are getting the overlay of peri playing on the thyroid.
