Hello. This is my first post to thes boards although I've been a lurker for some time.
I have suffered from low back pain for going on 18 years now but I've pretty much learned to live with it as many people do. I had a discectomy of the l5s1 many years ago. Not all that successful but I manage. At this point I guess that my condition is chronic. Thats ok. But in the last couple of years I have experienced what is now labeled as erectile dysfunction. Being 50 years old I can begin to accept that certain body functions begin to fade away as one ages. E/D is a tough one to swallow(no pun intended).
Now here's my concern. I am constantly reading in magazines and other articles that people should be able to continue sexual activity well into thier golden years. I assume that means some kind of erectile function although I realize there is much more to it than that. Well here I am a man in excellent physical shape, no medical conditions, perfect weight and height, healthy lifestyle, attractive with a wife who is very sexual and for the most part can't get it up. I've been to a urologist and everything looks good.
So to make a long story short has anyone experienced any E/D due to nerve impingment in the lumbar region? I should also note that I get some numbness in my crotch area when I do any cycling or stair stepper work at the gym. I have feeling in my genitals normally although not as sensitive as it used to be. Should I see a nuerologist or orthopedic?
Any suggestions appreciated.

I believe that it is possible that your e/d is from nerve impingement. I think I would see a neurologist to start with....have you looked at dermatome maps to see which nerves might possible affect that area? If you can't find the information, let me know and I will look it up for you...you should be able to type "dermatome" into your browser and find some websites.

Let me welcome you to the boards before I sign off. There are awfully nice, well-informed people here who will help all they can.

Hi there,
Before I got hurt, I was a long-distance cyclist. I have heard that men and long-distance cycling can be problematic ....sometimes causing e/d. Might want to look into changing your saddle or riding position. Too much pressure on your nerves there can definitely cause probs. The new saddle could be cheaper than the neurologist visit. Try that first. ;)
Good luck
