Hello,
I am having forceful beats when I am laying down to sleep. They occur 95% of the time when I am laying on my left side. I also feel an acheiness when I am just sitting, on the left side of my chest. When I move over to my right side I ususally don't get the forceful beats, and I can fall asleep. It doesn't seem to matter if I am just laying there falling asleep, or have just fallen asleep. I have a strange feeling a little before I will get the forceful beat or beats, and the only way I can describe this is it feels like someone is tickling the inside of my chest. and then it will go a little numblike. If I continue to lay on left side after the beat, it will happen again. It is very uncomfortable. This happens every night. And also, when I am sitting with a pillow against my left side, I will start to get the tickle feeling also. So anytime I seem to have pressure applyed to the left side of my chest I have these feelings. Can anyone help me? I am starting to get really scared that this could be something dangerous. Thanks.

Hi Tomsgirl...
I am a 39 year old female and I have been experiencing about the same thing you have been experiencing. You may want to read about a heart abnormality called "Mitral Valve Prolapse" (MVP). I looked it up on the Internet and it sounds just like what I'm going through. I also have other symptoms associated with the forceful heart beats. Sometimes I feel light headed and a little dizzy, pressure on my chest and sometimes shortness of breath. MVP is a weakened heart valve on the left side of your heart which is allowing back flow of blood. A normal heart valve only allows a one way blood flow. Mitral valve prolapse is believed to be inherited, with a greater expression of the MVP gene in females. You may want to read into this website and see if this maybe what you're experiencing. http://www.consciouschoice.com/holisticmd/hmd093.html
Hope this helps....

darcijake,
Thank you so much for the website, it sounds familiar to my symtoms. And thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I went to my doctor with the same symtoms, and a few more, and she said I think you have Anxiety. Now I'm not saying I haven't maybe had an attack, but I just don't think it is my main problem. Escpecially, since it only happens when I am laying on the left side. Did your doctor say this to you? They make you feel like your going nuts, that the symptoms are in your head.
Thanks again,
Tomsgirl76

I really don't think you're crazy.... But, there are people that I've heard of that do have regular panic attacks which causes their heart to race, but I think we are feeling something totally different. My doctor did ask me if I was experiencing any panic attacks, which I do at times, but not on a regular bases. The other questions he asked me was if I drank lots of coffee, which I don't, I drink decaf. One other question he asked was if I took any herbal vitamins, herbal diet pills or.... herbal anything else. I don't know if you take any herbal substances, but do know that the NEW women's libido inhancer called Avlimil has herbs that can cause irregular heart beats in some women. You may want to check into anything herbal you maybe taking. I know of a friend that was experiencing irregular heart beats and went to her doctor to find out it was her Avlimil causing her to have heart palpitions.
Hope this helps...
