Hello friends,
A coworker of mine who is tired of watching me rub my jaw and head during work suggested massage therapy - of course I already know that would work great. HOWEVER, she said a friend of hers who does massages regularly performs "jaw adjustments"..... Now this scares me because my jaw is "adjusting" all day long (grinding, popping, cracking...etc.). Is this like the age-old habit of having your back cracked? Ever had a jaw adjustment performed on you by chiropractor/massage therapist/doctor??? Is it as terrible as it sounds? The thought of popping and moving my poor jaw bones has already given me goosebumps!

Dana,

It is my understanding that you should NEVER let anyone adjust or manipulate your jaw. My kid sees a chiropractor at this time, but the adjustments are only for his neck/back. I would tend to think that an adjustment to the jaw could open the door for a whole new world of problems.

Dana,

What Cheryl says is true - you should NEVER let anyone adjust your jaw!

Dana,

I've had my jaw "adjusted" twice by two different chiropractors. The first time I didn't know what to expect... in fact he had already done it before I had a chance to say much about it. BAD IDEA! I was sore and felt worse for a few days, although there seemed to be no long lasting effect (good or bad.) I didn't ever let him do it again, though....

The second time was much, much different... different doctor. The "adjustment" didn't involve and shoving, pushing, popping, cracking like you'd expect from a chiropractor. He worked slowly and easily on my muscles, not bone/joint, to try and relax and balance them so one side wasn't tensed and pulling more than another. I've been for lots of physical therapy for my TMJ, including massage, and these always helped me more than most things. But I must say that the work this chiro did on my muscles really helped me a great deal at the time.

If you're thinking about this "jaw adjustment", find out exactly what it involves first. If it sounds painful or scary, forget it! -- Kaylbe

I went to the chiropractor for my jaw (and wrists and hip) a few times, and he did pop my jaw in some interesting ways that REALLY hurt while he was doing them, but it did seem a little looser after that. I was also given some massaging techniques, which also really hurt, so i didn't really do them that often (just when my jaw was very very tight). It's not a permanent solution, so it doesn't seem like a great investment to me. I'm currently waiting to find out if my insurance will cover a splint or anything like that.

My chiropractor will not touch my jaw AT ALL. And I'm happy about that.
Now my massage therapist works very diligently on my jaw muscles... I think it is helping.
