Hi there - stress/worry is the ultimate pain inducer. If you have methods of relieving stress (like exercise, quiet meditation, a nap, reading for pleasure, whatever), I would encourage you to find ways to de-stress because worry over pain causes stress which in turn increases pain - it's a viscious cycle that can be difficult to break. For me, professional counseling plus massage therapy has been a tremendous help to getting through the ups/downs of life. Although life will always have stress, I have ways of coping with it and not letting it ruin my day.
Thinking of you,

It ruins my day everyday, if it's not one thing it's another thing that I worry about. I have always been like this, I anaylize everything way too much and can't stop.

I agree, stress and anxiety will do you in if you have tmj. When I was first dianosed with it about 8 years ago..........the one thing that dentist did right was to suggest that I get into psychotherapy to learn how to handle stress. I am still going all these years later because it is true that alot of us "carry" all of our stress and worries in our jaw. It was amazing to me how many times a day I would find myself clenched so tight that my jaw would be throbbing, something you don't realize you do til you start getting help for it.
Maybe you could try some type of anxiety counseling???

Sometimes just saying the things out loud to someone can free you from that worry. I did it about two weeks ago and I feel freer than I have in a long time. I don't know if you are a religious person or not, but a caring pastor is who I opened up to.
And I am a huge advocate for massage therapy.

I take anti-anxiety (yes, the big V.) 1/2 of the smallest dose available during the day and 1 of the small dose at bedtime. It helps me keep my shoulders down and my jaw relaxed, somewhat. I am fortunate enough to still be able to work, despite my muscle spasms, but have to take frequent stretch and walking breaks. Thank goodness my employer is understanding.
I worry about long-term affects of V., but I am, just like everyone else, just trying to get through this with minimum pain and further damage.
I found a good chiro that also upon every visit has his staff perform ultrasound, heat and massage. My insurance is not very generous for chiros (10 visits/year), but this practitioner has agreed to keep his patients at the co-pay level after they've topped out. I'm hoping to give them a try next week.
My insurance allows an unbelievable 90 visits a year for P.T., which I had 10-12 visits, but to be honest, with one P.T. working on up to 5 patients at a time, it only wasted my time and money.
I've yet to find the right TMJ specialist in my area. Working towards researching #3.
I've had some relief with Epidural Steroidal Injections in my cervical spine and an Occipital Nerve Block, but it is dwindling.
On we go.
Best,
Del

My insurance will only cover a general counselor. I have tried but I just can't stop thinking about everything. The valium just knocks me out, if I take 1 it does nothing, then 2 and 3 it knocks me out. Also when I am on the valium I still can't stop worrying. I am doomed to a life of misery.
