I am reading a lot of parents talking about special diets and supplements. My child is not on any kind of diet or taking any supplements. The idea was never mentioned to me by my son's doctor. Does anyone know a good resource where I can learn more about certain diets and such, and why it is needed.
Thanks

The kids are not the same, so one diet make work for one, one for another, neither for few. Phenols, artificials, corn & corn syrup, and dairy are big triggers, as well as eggs, gluten and sometimes soy. Our specialist is Dr Mary Megson, who is one of the premier researching doctors in the field of spectrum disorders

Triggers? What do you mean?

Triggers as in setting off behavior problems, such as aggression,"brain fog", stimming, biting, etc.: physical problems such as constipation, diarrhea, headache and stomach pains.

Most doctors really have no clue- and will either roll their eyes and say "hooey" or some will give you the green light as long as they feel it is not "going to hurt anything to try". DAN doctors are usually better, and then there are a few who really "know their stuff" across the country. My Pdoc told me my son was "over his head" when my son was 4- 7 yrs ago. He has been absolutely astonished at his progress (as he is now indistinguishable from his peers)- and in the last few years has hooked up with doctors, etc. who are knowledgeable about supplements, diets, allergy/gut testing, etc. We have had to do much ourselves, with alot of help from people on our mailing lists, boards, chat and our specialist is 4 states away.

Jay lynn,
Rids is right...a "normal" peds doc will tell you we're all crazy and there is nothing to be done but therapy. I however have seen tremendous improvement with supplements, not dairy, a little with nystatin(yeast med) and haven't YET tried gfcf..thats next. Please find a book that helps inform. I bought one entitled The natural cure to Autism. But there are many similar out there. The Dan Website is very helpful too. I feel that it is trial and error on what works for each kid. I have put many hours of research into this as I'm sure we all have and more to come. look on the Dan list to find a doctor in your area, We just found one and he is a fam practice doc, who has an autistic son, which is probably the story with most....but thats what we need!!! Good luck to you and us all.
