I just received my orthotic yesterday. I have trouble with my right joint not working properly. One of my symptoms is pressure behind my right eye and blurred vision in my right eye. I've been to a ton of eye dr.'s and they tell me nothing is wrong. Sometimes it scares me and I think it could be something else. I see a rolfer and she tells me my sphenoid could be causing it.

What causes this blurred vision? Will it get better? Your input would be appreciated!

Hi Katt,

A number of studies have shown slight changes in the iris of the eye when sufficient facial muscle spasm is present. In addition, due to what is called "autonomic response", the eyes may also weep when the surrounding muscle structure is irritated.

Hi Katt,
I have that symptom as well. In fact I had myself convinced I had a brain tumor because of the blury vision in my right eye and the pain I would get behind my eye. The way my dentist explained it to me is that when your bite is off center, your body's whole "center" is off. If your muscles are out of align and your bite is out of align than your eustacian <sp> tubes in your ears are off center and your ears feel clogged and your vision gets off center if your bite is off, he told me there are so many symptoms of tmj and most dr;s and dentists do not recognize that so much is affected if our bite is off........hope you are getting some good treatment and with the right splint your vision should correct. I had noticable improvement in my eye pain and blurry vision right away. I still have episodes but they are getting less frequent.

Thank you, Karen, your comments have been helpful. This has been scary for me, as my symptoms are not very pain-related as some on this board. I do know that my jaw opens crooked, so hopefully time (and patience) will tell.

Katt,
what kind of appliance are you wearing and how long have you had it?

Karen,

I don't know the name of it, but I have an orthotic that fits on my top teeth (roof of my mouth) and my lower jaw is moved forward and the bottom, front teeth touch it slightly. I just received it yesterday.

How long was it before you noticed your vision improved?

Katt,
I have a bottom splint that is called a level, platform splint. All of my top teeth sit level on this and there is very little movement that occurs this way. I have had several splints, but I think this type for me is on the money! My problem is muscular in nature and is from clenching, grinding and back teeth that don't touch without a splint.
I noticed a difference the first day with this particular splint, in fact as I was driving home the day I got this splint I noticed a difference. I have had 2 splints in the past 5 weeks, and when they are wrong, in my experience over the last 7 or so years, you just don't see that much improvement. I have wasted my share of $$$$ money on these things! But for pain relief and getting my life back the price is never to high as long as it is an answer. If you don't notice some improvement within the first week, ever so slight as it might be, than maybe your splint is not right, or maybe your dentist doesn't have your bite right on the splint, two different but equal problems. Let me know how you are doing.

Karen,

Well, today is one week since I got the splint and I do notice a difference! I noticed my vision clearer beginning in the evening a few days ago. Today, my vision is clearer at the office. My specialist told me some of my symptoms may worsen when I first get it - they did. I do still feel off-balance and a little dizzy, and I still don't wake up feeling as if I slept. I am on a "no chew" diet for 2 wks, and then I go back for a follow up. I hope I'm on the right track, finally.

Thanks for your encouragement!

HI Katt,
I am soooooooo glad you are noticing an improvement with your vision! It is awful how tmj can even cause your vision and center of focus to be off, isn't it?
I think I am going to have to do the no chew thing. I am eating in my splint, but my symptoms flare up so bad after I eat and really I am not eating anything harder than cooked noodles! :) I guess I need to just stick with the foods that don't have to be chewed since I am just starting splint therapy again, thanks for the tip!
