Rids, you seem to know a lot about autism. How did you learn so much? If you don't mind me asking, how old is your child?

Hello,
Sorry for the delay in answering this- I have 4 very busy boys. My son is 11, and has always been in a mainstream classroom without an aide. He is indistinguishable from his peers- is he "cured"? I think autism is like cancer, if you get this far- in remission, but not "gone". Hard to explain....
We did not do ABA- did not even hear about it until he was 8. My husband and I guessed well and read much-
(I still research)and stayed in his face so to speak- and made sure we kept him in our reality, not his. The shots all gave him infantile spasms, which out so called professional Pediatrician blew off as an immature nervous system- slowly I lost him- slowly I got him back.

You sound like a great mother. I asked why you are so knowledgable because this is new to me and I am trying to learn as much as possible so I can be more aware of what is going on with my child, therefore I can help him. Like I said before, I am overseas and there are not a lot of resources available here. I went to the library yesterday to get some books, unfortunately the books I found were from the 70s, so I don't know how accurate they are now. Today is my first set day to start working (as his teacher) one on one and I still am not exactly sure what to do, but I am going to focus on playing together and teaching different nouns and verbs. He does talk, but not for communication purposes.

Have you ever heard that autistic children are unusually attractive? I read this last night in a book I borrowed from the library. It's funny because my child doesn't look like myself or my husband, but his eyes are so big and intense, I can lose myself in his eyes. He is a beautiful little boy, but all children are beautiful!

Have a nice day
