Hi all. I went in for an HSG this morning and they didn't get to inject the dye or do anything cuz the pain was so horrific I couldn't handle it. I've never had an incomplete test before and never felt sooo much awful pain. I'm sorry to scare those who may be reading this who have never had one before and may need one, but I was told this test was simple and done all the time and there is nothing to worry about except some mild cramping..... Anyway, each time they inflated that little balloon anchor thingy in my cervix, the pain came about and was so bad I had to have them stop the test... They tried to inflate this thing 3 times... Anyone out there ever have an incomplete HSG?

Mine was complete but like you said - the pain was horrific. My Dr. at the time (have since gone to a new one) told me it would be a little crampy - like bad cramps during your period - I almost couldn't stand the pain. My legs were shaking and all I could do was breathe deep and pray that it would be over soon.

My tests showed that everything was clear but I have an odd shaped uterus. If you might can bear to do it again - it does rule out certain things.

GOOD LUCK!!

The first time I went was extremely uncomfortable and the doctor performing it did'nt get it done. The next time I went my own OB doc came and diit, I had to be dialated so it was definately painful. I am glad I had it done though at least I knew my tubes were not blocked.

Michele, I have not had an incomplete hsg so unfortunately I can't answer your question. I just wanted to say I am so sorry you went thru so much pain. I did as well and it was terrible. I was literally screaming, however they were able to finish it (man, were they rushing to get it done when I started screaming). Afterwards, I was just crying ... from the cramping and just the whole emotional part of it ... the things we are willing to do and go thru to get PG, u know? Before I had the HSG, I researched it like nobody's business. Everything I read said "mild" cramps ... yeah, right. I was in pain for 2 days afterwards and actually felt that I would not feel worse had I actually had a baby. Couldn't even touch my belly. Just a suggestion ... maybe talk to your dr and see if she/he knows why you had such a reaction. Maybe a mild muscle relaxant may help the next time.

Thanks for responding, gals. It really helps to know that other people have gone through the same thing and felt the same emotions.....

Hi, Michele.

I just had the test done a couple months ago, and you're right, it is very painful. I was scared out of my mind to go have it done, so I made my dh come with me. He was such a comedian during the whole time that I was able to focus more on him and his being such a goofy fella during the whole thing, that it was drowning out the pain. At one point when he decided to calm down, I really started feeling the pain more, and thought I was going to pass out. If you can try it again, you might want to try bringing a friend or someone with you who can REALLY distract you from the pain, and hopefully you will be able to get through it without realizing just how bad it really hurts....if that makes any sense at all.

Good Luck!

Hi there,
I must have a high tolerance for pain or I had a great doctor. Although I found the HCG incredibly uncomfortable I didn't experience the terrible pain you're talking about. I found the worst to be when it was over. I was unbelievably light headed and almost fainted. They had the table on a very steep angle (I almost felt like I was going to slide off onto the floor) and all the blood rushed to my head. Were any of you on an angle? maybe that's why it wasn't as painful.
Perhaps your doctor could give you some pain meds if you have to try again. Best of luck.

Hi,

Long years ago, the doctor who did my HSG told me it wouldn't hurt. The pain of the clamp on my cervix was searing. After I pealed myself off of the ceiling, I told him what I'd felt and that if he ever told another woman that it wouldn't hurt, he'd see my face calling him a liar. He looked startled.

Recently, I've assisted with the procedure and those wonderful doctors in central Texas did HSGs with their patients sedated. 3 cheers for proper use of medication!

Hope you can find a doctor with that same philosophy.

Wishing you well - Barbara

I had an HSG done when I was under anestesia during a laporotomy. The doctor was removing my left ovary, which was engulped by a cyst caused from endo.
He tested my right fallopian tube to see if it went through since it was scarred from endo lesions. The dye didn't:(.

I had this done back in 2000 and I remember his saying cramping and it was some pretty bad cramping and I was lucky cause its suppose to feel worse if there is a blockage. Mine showed a problem with my Uterus, either misshapen or a septum and required further testing. I was just thankful there wasn't any blockage in the tubes cause I couldn't imagine the pain being worse. I am sorry for your experience, do you know anyone else that used this Dr.? I was very comfortable with mine and new one of his previous patients (which referred me) and kind new 2 others. And all were very pleased with him, all had different problems and all had successful pregnancies. I do wish you luck! Baby Dust to all!!
