Does anyone think that extreme stress or anxiety during pregnancy has any affect on autism?

I've heard some researchers talk about that therory, but I really don't buy it. So many people are stressed during pregnancy and have had tragic things happen to them and have normal children. Why is it that autism has just recently become and epidemic in the recent years. Stress has always been around and yet autism was extremly rare 20 years ago....and now it's not. I don't believe autism has one cause...in my son's case, I know it was vaccinations because he was normal just before his second bday and he regressed over a period of a month after receiving a dpt, hep-b, hib, mmr, and polio all in the same day. I really believe autism is from an over load of too many toxins which destroys or damages the MT protein with is responsible for helping the body detox.

I agree with Nicksmom, I had a very stressfull pregnancy and jay was born early but healthy. I realy dont think anyone can blame it on stress while pregnant. My son had reacuring health problems after his vacinations which they gave him antibiotics regularly for I also belive this is a major factor in the cause of his aspergers. Although no-one knows for sure what causes any autism from what Ive experianced in my son and countless other parents will be able to do is pinpoint when things started to change that for me was after his jabs.

Same here! I was under extreme amounts of stress during my pregnancy. Failing marriage and stuff, but I do not believe that had anything to do with it. My son was perfectly normal, talking, walking everything until he had all those shots at once. He had 5 all at one time including the MMR. The only thing I did differently with my other pregnancies was refuse to have all those shots given at once and the MMR I refused until they were at least 2. My stress was deffently no better with the second child if anything it was worse. All three of my other children are perfectly fine. We are still watching my 5 month old just to be on the safe side, but he is not having all those shots together. I think all people need to realize it is nothing they did to cause autism in a child. I think that is the first thing every parent does when the diagnoses is made. They blame theirselves. I will tell you the same thing I just got thru telling my step daughter that is pregnant. Do not spend your time worring about all the things that could happen to your baby, just enjoy the precious moments of carring that little one around for 9 months. Good luck!
