View Full Version : South Beach -- can I cheat with peanut M&M's?

I'm just starting the South Beach diet, (trying to lose about 20 pounds). My one indulgence in life is peanut M&M's. I've read they are a reasonably low glycimic food, believe it or not. I've convinced myself that if I restrict myself to about 10 pieces a day, (and I WILL stick to that), I can still do the diet. Am I fooling myself? If I eat those peanut M&M's, maybe I can make up for the increase in sugar by reducing it somewhere else.

babe, you're fooling yourself alright. No diet will work in the long term if you have this idea that you can return to the diet and lifestyle that made you fat to begin with, and not gain/regain weight. Think about it.
No diet will work in the short-term, if you make exceptions for your favorite indulgence and continue to indulge.

Cut out the m&m's. ;) (I know, NOT what you wanted to hear.)

Essentially, you can take the number of calories those M&Ms are worth and cut them out somewhere else.

The only drawback to this is that the Southbeach Diet (as well the Atkins Diet) rely on eliminating food combinations such as these sweets that will not satisfy or help curb the "hunger" feeling.

Although, peanut M&Ms are a better choice compared to straight chocolate or suger (such as gummie worms) because you are taking in quite a bit of protein from the nuts.

Your choice. But the question is, can you master your mind to not go nuts and feel the need to eat more than 10 once you start?

A diet is about WHAT is eaten not just about CALORIES. So to "just subtract out" these calories is absolutely ridiculous. There is little to NO nutrition in Peanut M&M's not matter how much one tries to rationalize it.

They are not allowed on Phase 1 - period.

To make phase one work, you have to get rid of the craving for carbs and sugars so you have to go without them for the first two weeks while you're in phase one. I believe in the book it says something about peanut M&Ms, but I couldnt find where, so if you have the book go through and read it again. Somewhere in there, they tell you when you can have peanut M&Ms, so give them up for now, it's worth it!
