I know someone with Asperger's that wants to become a Doctor. He is pretty high-functioning (he cares about people, dose good in school, etc..), but I dont know if Asperger's can ruin his ambitions. Do you guys think Asperger's can prevent him from becoming a good doctor? Is there hope for his dream?
God bless you all for making this such a great board :)

Yes, there is hope for his dream! My oldest daughter has AS and her teacher from last year and I became great friends because she has a son with AS. I am happy to say that he graduated from med school last month and is on his way to being a pedatrician!

ASD is NOT a mental illness! It is a biomedical condition!

Of course someone with AS can become a Doctor. In fact, with their encylopedic knowledge they can become excellent doctors! They make excellent scientists. It's really amazing how valuable people with AS are. They like to specialize in areas in which other people have little interest. But school can be very difficult for AS students. Not the work, but being able to organize themselves.

this thread is interesting such success stories great to read. only today ive been told my 10 yr old son has traits of autism with traits of asperges syndrome and im clueless to what they both are and the levels of which he is at. also do they use medication for this asperges syndrome im after input about it all.
Ive known for years there is something wrong with my son but no one supported me or even listened to me, i thought i was going mad until today.

Congratulations on your aspiring physician!!
Keep in mind that Einstein and Newton were both High Functioning Asberger's. It shounds like your son has learned to adapt with his HFA and hasn't limited himself.

English miler Roger Bannister, the first man to break the four minute mile, became a physician, a neurologist at that, and I suspect he had some signs of Asperger's. He was also very intelligent and a very kind man. I definitely think there is hope!
Anyone who has Asperger's or suspects it should read about Roger Bannister's life. His story is a great source of inspiration to me!
