shantox73 04-11-2004, 10:56 PM hey guys,
just wondering if too much of a paste such as poligrip is used can it cause the denture to feel tighter in the gums ? on some days it feels like the denture is just seated so great and some days feels like its not lined up just right or something. hard to tell why this seems to be the case. any ideas or advice on positioning correctly when putting the dentures in ? its mainly the top plate i can tell a difference in. its not loose just feels oddly placed kinda =\ .
thanks

Tessalou 04-12-2004, 12:26 AM don't know if this is supposed to happen or not but I get the same reaction from my dentures. I started using the powder kind on top because of this problem and it seems to help. The powder doesn't last two minutes on the bottoms because of the looseness so I use the gel type on them. I feel out of line and my bottoms feel like they are too high up and on some days and some days I forget I am wearing dentures.
Valwp 04-12-2004, 08:37 AM I definately think the adhesives can make your dentures fit differently - that is in fact the reason I started using the powder on my upper. The paste/gel made the denture feel 'off' - and the Seabond pads made the problem seem worse - I was amazed that a thin pad could make such a difference in the fit, but it did....the pads and the gel/paste seem to add enough 'bulk' to the denture that it made it feel like my bite was 'off.'
Have you tried the powder type yet??? That has made a big difference for me.

martid 04-12-2004, 12:30 PM TO VALWP Had a hard time finding you!. I think they don't like to talk about much anything else except veneers and bleeching on the other board. How are you. Is your upper still fitting ok?. So far mine is I'm surprised one reline since I started to wear it. So far so good I even had to wear any adhesive. I started a thread on this board looking for people with implants. May you will find it, it's somewhere in the middle of this. I find it hard to navigate on this board. I think I wrote a couple of message for you on this board but I can't even find them now. Talk to you soon, hope you see this message! Marti
shantox73 04-12-2004, 04:58 PM thanks Val, i will continue looking for the powder type, i have been to several different stores/pharmacies and all the seem to have is the paste and the pads =( , what you are describing sums up the way mine feel, also today i noticed alot of blood in my dentures when i removed them... possible bonechips could cause this ??
Valwp 04-12-2004, 06:02 PM You might not be finding the powder because the box is VERY similiar to the Fixodent paste - look very closely at all the boxes and make sure it says 'adhesive powder' - while there's several types of paste (extra strength, mint, etc) - there's only one type of powder, and it should be near the paste.
I too, missed it for awhile - I bought mine at the local grocery store, but I'm pretty sure that Walgreen's has it too. When I found it, I bought 3 just for that reason!!!
I have had bit's of blood in my denture....I didn't attribute them to bone chips though because I didn't have any pain?!?!? I guess I thought it was part of the healing process.
Good luck and keep me posted if you find the powder - I'd be curious to know if you find it helps with the fit.

Hi Shantox,
Are you from New Zealand by any chance? About a year ago I read in another group that there is no powder denture adhesive there. You might consider buying it through the internet (even if you're not in New Zealand and it's tough to find).

mysticvenus 04-12-2004, 11:30 PM Been reading your posts. I have been using the gel/paste on my upper. Bought some of the adhesive powder today and tried it this evening. It really works!!!! I can't believe how much more comfortable they are with the powder instead of the paste. Thanks for the input. I'm now a powder girl!!!
simonanddena 04-13-2004, 08:00 AM I havent had to use any adhesives yet myself. but I have been asking around. The consensus seems to be powder for the top and gel for the bottom. My mom swears by the powder on top, says she gets a super fit. I am sure to hunt that powder down if I ever need an adhesive. If anybody cant find it cvs pharmacy carries two different brands and they also have it where you can order online. Sincreely Dena
shantox73 04-14-2004, 06:21 PM hey guys,
well i found the fixodent powder today and all i can say is ... "WOW" !!! what a difference in fit ! for the first time since i got my dentures they actually feel as tho they are all the way in ! no movement at all anywhere on the denture and speaking seems much easier cuz the denture is actually seated where it should be ! thank you guys so much for all the posts, youre wisdom is golden !

simonanddena 04-15-2004, 08:30 AM OK I have a question to those using the powder. My dentist talked to me about adhesives and how to use them. He told me to only put on the palate part for now to not cause any trauma to the open sockets. Well he showed me how to appy etc but that was the paste stuff, putting a small line of it around the palate part to hold in place. Ok so now for those using the powder where do you put it? Just trying to get prepared for when I need it.
Sandybeech 04-15-2004, 08:52 AM Dena- you sprinkle it inside the plate. It kind of goes everywhere in there. Harder to control where exactly you put it so it is not good for healing gums. With the pastes you can direct them to exact spots where extra hold or cushioning is needed. I use the powder on my lower only sometimes and it works very well and as others have said- less messy.
Valwp 04-15-2004, 10:27 AM Dena,
I was able to use adhesive as soon as my stitches were out - 1 week after my extractions. Seems there's alot of variation in the advice that dentists give to us....mine said it's 'ok' after a week, but yours doesn't advise it still 3 weeks later?!?! I dunno....but as we've discussed before, my preference is definately the powder - however, if you are only putting it on your palette right now, it would be a little tricky to direct it, and you may do better with the paste type for now - since you're only using on the palette the paste won't be as messy as if you were using it along the gums too....did your dentist tell you how long it might be before you can use adhesive along the gums??? Just curious....
Shantox - glad you were able to find the powder....it's great, isnt' it??? I too find the fit to be so much more comfortable - I love this website for this reason....we're all in the same boat and can share first hand experience and advice!!!
Have a great day everyone! :D

Does the powder type hold your upper denture securely ALL day?
shantox73 04-16-2004, 07:35 AM hey virgo,
i wear my dentures from about 7am - 8pm on one application of powder. i also drink alot of coffee in the morning which i can tell weakens the hold as the hot liquid comes in contact with it. but it tightens back up and gets me thru dinner time, easy to come out at night too where the pastes took alot of effort to remove.
simonanddena 04-16-2004, 07:41 AM My dentist didnt give me a time frame to be able to use on the healing gums. I will just wait and see. I am pretty sure I will have to use some paste adhesive this weekend. Guess I will go with what the dentist gave me for now. When I eat now they tend to shift and wobble. So I think today I will try it and see how it goes will let you know later lol. Dena
Valwp 04-16-2004, 02:31 PM The powder definately holds well all day for me too - if I'm going out to dinner, I might clean them and then add another application of powder before going out, just to be safe.
Doesn't it stink that just when you think that everything is great, and the denture fits snug, it all changes??? My dentist told me to expect this as the first few months go by and your gums and mouth are still changing....but it is frustrating - one day I feel great and can eat most things, then the next day I have loose dentures and/or a sore spot on my palette. I am feeling like a 'frequent flier' in the dentists chair this last month!!!
On top of having to get used to these dentures....
I broke my foot AND sprained my ankle yesterday!!!
I'd like to tell you that I did it while skiiing down a black diamond mountain in Colorado......but I live in South Florida, so that's a bit of a stretch.....
the truth is, I stepped wrong off a stair and onto something on the floor that just caught my foot wrong - living on crutches is the most frustrating thing- and the timing couldn't have been worse. I had a 'girls weekend' planned at the beach (was supposed to leave today) ....and we're going to Disney next weekend....guess I'll be doing that in a wheelchair!!!! I'm not a person who can sit still for very long, so this is very frustrating to me....
the good news is that it's my left foot.....so I can still drive!!! :D
~Valerie~
simonanddena 04-17-2004, 11:16 AM Oh Val so sorry to hear about your foot. And when you had all sorts of stuff planned. Liked your sense of humor, Still able to drive lol. Thats the way my luck goes. My luck went like this. I had a appt on 3-8 he scheduled me for extractions and all on 3-22. Well I have a nephew that had open heart surgery to patch a valve on his heart the day he was born (12 yrs ago) well he has been having problems and they were debating another surgery. Well they decided to do his surgery on 3-26. Well I have 2 nieces and a nephew (his sisters and brother). The surgery was at a hospital 6 hrs away. I had to babysit the kids while my sis in law and her hubby went with him for his surgery. So I was 3 days into my recovery before having a house with 6 kids. Thank goodness all went well. But boy what a time lol.
Used paste adhesive yesterday, it held all day and I could actually eat. But with putting the adhesive only on the palate part didnt keep the teeth completely still but at least i knew they werent going anywhere. I will keep using it til i can use the powder. Cant wait for Sept to get my permanent set maybe i wont have to use any then.
time to get on with my weekend and enjoy the beautiful spring weather here in GA take care all have a great weekend. BYEE :-)
