I used this years and years ago - several times too - and I loved it, but I didn't do it myself. I had a girlfriend do it once, I think my mom did it once, my husband did it once...it's really pretty simple but I wouldn't suggest doing it yourself as you can't really see what you're doing as well as someone else can. My hair is a medium brown too and I left it on until it was pretty blonde but that was what I wanted. You have to remember that this was back in the 70's and we didn't have some of the techniques back then that we have today for highlights, but for cost, you really can't beat what you bought. The growing out was pretty much the same as it would be no matter what technique you used - the lighter the color, the more obvious the growing out will be. I think the box suggests a test strand that you keep checking for color until it reaches the shade you're happy with, doesn't it? If not, you want to start checking at the minimum amount of time as some people will absorb the color alot faster than others.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I use this on my mother-in-law's dark brown hair and it works great. I usually pull very small pieces of hair through the cap and since there is alot of the bleach left, we do more highlights after if we think we need to. The reason you are suppose to leave it in so long is that you are trying to achieve blonde highlights and if you take it out too soon your hair will actually be orange or brassy. This is the reason we do "skinny" streaks is so the blonde is not so obvious. I actually find that the highlights blend with her own hair colour to look more natural.

I am not as brave as my mother-in-law so when I used it I pulled out very few, very thin pieces of hair and mixed equal parts of the powder and solution(directions for strand test) and used that. After a few days of living with it I would do a few more, then more and more until I had eventually used up all of the solution, this way I knew when to stop and did not make a huge mistake or go overboard so that I would have to dye over it as I have had to do in the past.
