Hi all - first time posting to a board, so hope I've done this right. On Feb. 10, my dentist gave me a night-time bite splint for TMJ disorder. I'm new to all of this, so I'm not sure exactly what you call the type of splint I received , but it's small, fits only on my two front teeth and prevents my upper and lower teeth from touching when I close my mouth. When I started using the splint, I began to experience a "fogginess" in my head, which I then attributed to the fact that I had just quit smoking and wasn't getting my usual nicotine fix. After about a month of using the splint, I began to notice that my TMJ symptoms seemed to worsen. My headaches have become more intense, my entire face and skull seem to CONSTANTLY "burn", my neck, back and shoulders ache all of the time, and my teeth and jaw are killing me. To top it all off, last night, my left ear suddenly became "blocked", and in it I began hearing a very intense ringing, accompanied by mild pain. It has been about 24 hours, my ear is still clogged, the ringing will not stop, and I can hear nothing out of that ear. I have tried cleaning the ear out twice today with a basic ear cleaning kit, with no improvement and no sign of a wax build-up.
I have read through some of the board's posts, and the information has been very, very helpful, but I am wondering if anyone out there has experienced such a sudden congestion or loss of hearing in the ear combined with intense tinnitus as a result of TMJ disorder? I am a little concerned by this, and anyone's input would be greatly appreciated. I plan on calling my dentist first thing in the morning, but I would like to hear from others who may have experienced the same thing. Thank you all for your time and patience.

TMJ can cause a severe symptom right away from my own experience. Today, and I am in a splint 24/7 right now, I took it out to clean it and while it was out I drank some water and had symptoms come up very, very quickly. A tmj symptom or flare up can escalate very quickly.........good luck, please keep us posted.

It sounds like you have an NTI and it probably needs adjusting.

Buffalina, If you have experienced a sudden deafness and tinnitus, I would also get to an ENT (ear, nose and throat) Doctor right away. You might have something going on with your ears coexisting with your TMJ, and if caught in time, the doctor may be able to save your hearing. This happened to me back in 1995, and a course of Prednisone helped me regain my hearing, it took one week and I slowly regained it back to normal, but I still have the tinnitus. Hope this helps.

Thank you all for your input. I called my dentist this morning, and I was told by a member of the staff (dentist is out of town) that they have never heard of ANYONE having hearing problems as a result of TMJ disorder, and insisted that it was probably an inner ear issue (though I have no dizziness). Anyway, I have made an appt. with my primary care physician (stupid HMO won't let me go see an ENT dr. without a referral); hopefully she will be able to help. Not to be crude, but I hope like heck that all she has to do is pull out a big ol' wad of wax and voila - problem solved!!!!
I think I will call dentist back and make appt. for NTI adjustment, and just hope that I don't have to do a course of Prednisone - nasty, nasty drug!!!
Thanks for your help, folks - this messageboard has been very informative.

buffalina, Can't your GP give you a referral over the phone ? I think you should insist on it, and get to an ent as soon as possible. Tell them that you have had a sudden hearing loss, and it is an emergency. Don't mess around when it comes to your hearing ! If it is only ear wax, then you will be relieved that much sooner. Good luck to you.

Heidi - so your ear pain wasn't the result of anything "obvious", like fluid? Can TMJD cause fluid in ears? My doc said I have fluid build-up. She gave me a prescription decongestant and said that if I don't feel better in a few days, then I can call for a referral to an ENT doc (she wouldn't just give me a referral over the phone because I hadn't seen her before). She had no idea about the relationship between ear problems and tmjd (just like my dentist), and didn't seem real concerned about any possible connection between the two. ARGH!!!
Hope you all are well - I need to do some more reading of this board so that I get to know you all better! Have a pleasant, tension free night!
