View Full Version : Negative Yasmin Experiences?

Hi Ladies,

I have been taking Yasmin for the past two months. I am supposed to start my 3rd tomorrow. I was wondering about the range of negative experiences/side effects you guys have had with Yasmin, and when they occured during your taking this pill. Is it possible for side effects to show up 3 or 4 months into taking the pill, maybe even a year?

The past couple days I've had a tightness in my chest and a difficulty breathing. This has never happened to me before, and only since I started taking Yasmin. I was on Ortho Tri Cyclin for about 2 years before I made the switch, and nothing like this ever happened. It has me worried enough that I am thinking about stopping them, and talking to my doc. I'll be disappointed if I do have to stop taking them long term, as I think they were working better than the OTC in clearing up my acne, but if the negative effects outweigh the positive, I will not question stopping them. I read on another post that one of the girls would rather stop taking Yasmin and have acne than endure the suicidal tendencies. I agree with her, though my case is not about emotional imbalances.

Thanks for your advice, guys! The support I get from these postings is wonderful! And don't worry, I do intend to talk to my doc, and not just keep this to the boards.

the only bad thing i had to experience with yasmin was the constant nausea. it was so horrendous that after the 3rd month i had to stop because it just kept getting worse. it wasnt getting better like the doc told me it would. other than that i liked it...

Hi. You had replied to a post I left about Yasmin today. Thank you so much for replying to it cause it made me feel better knowing that someone else is having these weird things happen too! I thought something was seriously wrong with me! But I get to start a new bcp in a week...let's hope it works well for me and takes these symptoms away...they drive me crazy!!! Good luck to you and I hope you can find the best one for you too!!!!

thanks, andilyn! i'm going to a lab to have blood drawn this weekend, and then they will send it to my doc to do some testing. i guess i'll have the results sometime next week. i hope nothing is really seriously wrong with me, and that it is just the pills (even though that is bad too). but that way i can hopefully swtich to something more suitable for me. and thanks to the rest of you for your support and advice. i'll keep you guys posted!

I thought Yasmin was fine at first and after about 4 months, I was horribly depressed, I felt like my life was awful, I basically would sit and stare into space, I was always tired, I heard this weird cracking noise every so often in my head (sounds weird I know), and I had absolutely NO libido, gone, gone, gone. I switched to Estrostep FE and really like that, no side effects, great skin. I'm starting Seasonale Sunday.

I had a horrible experience with yasmin - chronic anxiety, moodiness, depression... i was a mess! Changed to Diane 35 and haven't looked back since

Hey, I'm glad most of you guys have been able to find something that works for you. Sometimes it's so difficult to decide, because there are so many options in BCPs! And some...you just never know until you try. It's discouraging when you try one that gives you bad side effects, but such a relief when you find one that's perfect for you. Good luck, you guys!

Hey guys, the clinic I go to said my blood tests came back fine, so nothing wrong there. But I have yet to speak to my doc. The problem is going away a little, but it still worries me.

hi
i'm sorry you all are having / or have had such problems with Yasmin - lot of it sounds so awful.
i'm on my second...or is it third....month of taking it and i can't say i've had those symptoms you have all mentioned but.....it took me into the second month of pills to STOP bleeding and then things were finally what i called "normal." then i took them religiously up until two rough days where my kids were sick and i got little sleep and my schedule was all off and i forgot about them - but missing just those two days started me bleeding full force like i had my period!! that was like a week and a half ago and i still haven't stopped bleeding - tho it's diminished. i swear - it seems my body would have regulated better without taking pills then it seems to taking them. at least i know that if i didn't take the pill i wouldn't have a period around 28 days or so of the month - and would have it only about 5 days or so - vs. bleeding and spotting ALL the time!!! aaarrggg. i feel like i have a period 24/7!

OK....Yasmin stinks. It broke me out worse than anything I've ever tried. Just went off it today. Derm put me on 100mg of spiro. BCP's I've tried are: Desogen, Ortho tri, and Ortho tri lo. None were too impressive, but ortho tri was the best. Heard good things about Diane, but I'm just not going down this hormone frenzy again. I want to see how spiro works on its own. By the way, did 2 rounds of accutane....only thing that worked, but unfortunately, it's only temporary, pimples start coming back after about 6 mos.

I just read a scary post about Yasmin and Blood Clots from another thread on this site. Yikes! You'd think with all these medical advances, we could come up with something effective AND safe. On top of the weird breathing stuff, I've been experiencing vaginal dryness. I spoke to my gyno, and she thinks it might be some kind of infection & anxiety. I am going to go see her for an appointment in a couple weeks. The only thing negative I heard about Yasmin before trying it was related to skin problems. I wish I'd heard about all this before. My doc doesn't think it's the Yasmin, but I don't know what else it could be, because I've been perfectly fine, healthy, etc, and none of this started happening until Yasmin. It's soooo odd! Well, good luck all. And definitely, if you know for sure that your BCPs are causing non-stop periods, depression, or any other of those negative effects, it's so worth it to try switching to another brand ASAP, or dropping the whole pill thing all together and opting for something else!

Hi All,

I saw my doc last week, and she thinks my symptoms are being caused by stress/anxiety attacks. She said my heart and lungs sounded perfect, and she prescribed me Xanax. Hopefully it will help until I can change some of the things in my life for the better. As for the Yasmin, she is keeping me on it. Maybe it was just intensifying the anxiety I already had? Well, I'll post if anything odd comes up. Good luck to you all, and thanks for being so supportive! ;D

Hi,

Usually I'm on the menopause board because I'm going thru perimenopaus (at least that is what the doctor says). I am on Yasmin (3 months now) and don't notice anything but I have the chest pressure/pain and it even extends around my back. The Yasmin has not effected that (had that since February) but it stopped my spotting. I had the chest pains before I started taking this.

Another thing I now have is constipation - this all stems from my hormones changing - so the doctor says. I am also on xanax. Wish I could find something otc but it's the only thing that relieves the chest problem COMPLETELY. Very scarey! I thought I had lung cancer or was having a heart attack. I totally feel for you.

Hang in there,
kc

I have only been taking yasmin for 2 weeks for the first time and the sde effects for me have been severe! ive had heavy bleeding for the entire 2 weeks now, terrible admonial pains, depression (losing motivation to exercise, see friends or work and im usually an exercise obsessive but just dont seem to be in the mood at all during that 2 weeks to exercise whatsover, ive also been overly emotional and crying over everything .... sad but true), and also breathing problems where i feel i am having troubl breathing and chest pains and pains on the left side of my body .... today is the first day i have decided to stop taking it and i guess its just time to get my body back to normal and find one that suits me ...

I just came across this thread. I believe that Yasmin has made me gain weight. I've been taking Yasmin for 2 months now and just started my period today. I was quite relieved because the side effects of Yasmin had been making me believe I could have been pregnant. I had to pee all the time and was crazy hungry! I was very tired all the time, just totally exhausted. I, too, had the breathing trouble. I can't get a deep breath. (I call that reaching my "threshold of breath" :), and it makes me crazy to not be able to do it.) I have really been very aware of my inability to breathe deeply enough. I am hoping these side effects are truly Yasmin, because I called my gyno today to request his putting me back on Mircette and he acted like I was crazy to think Yasmin had caused weight gain. All I know is that these problems didn't start happening until on Yasmin. So hopefully Mircette, which worked really well for me in the past, will be better.

I was on Yasmin for about 4 months and HATED it!!!!! It made me into a crazy psycho {removed}! I would yell at my boyfriend for no reason and then start crying about nothing. Plus it made me really really depressed. I have to say that Yasmin is the WORST bcp I have ever tried (and I have tried alot of them).
The only good thing about Yasmin was that it did regulate my periods which no other bcp has been able to do.

Do not try to censor your own words to get around the board rules and censoring.

Oh Lord!! I was given Yasmin a month ago. I havent started taking it yet though..(THANK GOD!) why would my Dr give me this if she knew I had a history of depression/bipolar/anxiety attacks?!?! That is CRAZY!

Ibtara86 - like every pill, Yasmin affects each woman differently. I was on diane 35 and felt emotional and depressed much of the time for the last few months, whereas Tyger loves it. It is all about finding the right one for you. Also, I have been off for almost a month and I feel a lot better, and don't plan to ever take the pill - any pill -again.

Ive said it before on other posts... my friend was on it for 3 or 4 months.. switched from ortrho novum 777... she had the worst periods of her life.. extremely heavy and major major cramping and headaches every single month. also her periods went from 3 days to 6 or 7. so she switched to seasonale.. no problems at all now.
she works at a gyn office and has heard a lot of people complain of a lot of different symptoms from yasmin
i was giong to try it until i heard of all the issues people have with it.
ill stick with estropstep.. one of the few pills that i have not had any problems with.

I have been on Yasmine for 2 months and it is great. The first 4 days my body had to get use to it , I had headaches, nausea and bloating. My periods are still only 3 days just like before, my skin looks great and I do not feel tired, hungry, depressed like everyone is saying.

Thanks so much for all your posts - I couldn't figure out why I was feeling so weird and spacy, in addition to the frequent bathroom breaks, acne and lack of breath instances. Now I know why! I'm almost done with my 2nd month of Yasmine - should I wait it out a bit longer or should I switch? I know that sometimes your body just needs some time to adjust to the hormones. Thanks everyone!

! I've been having tightness in my chest and difficulty breathing as well but I'm on Ortho Tri-Cyclen. I can't believe the side effects of Yasmin. I'll definitely have to remember that when I go to my doctor. I'm considering asking for a different birth control.

OMG!!!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS PILL (YASMIN, I MEAN) All the symptoms that everyone is describing happened to me. The first week I experienced nausea and some depression, but I figured it was an adjustment period and I would get over it. On the seventh day, it was a Sunday. It was the worst day of my life. I had chest pains, heart palpitations, insomnia, depression, leg cramps, blurred vision, and went to the bathroom every ten minutes. I couldn't walk very well because my legs hurt so bad and I felt like I was another person.

From what I understand, Yasmin has a potassium sparing diuretic which can cause all of the above mentioned symptoms. It causes your body to increase its production of potassium which can be very dangerous at higher levels. I had to get my blood tested for my potassium level. It was normal, thank god. Once, I got off the pill, the symptoms went away and I felt better.

By the way, do not let your doctor prescribe you xanax. You are not having anxiety/panic attacks for no reason. It is the pill. If you want to feel better, I suggest getting on to a pill without a diuretic. Hope this helps. That's my story.

Wow that's crazy! i have never had any bad symptoms of Yasmin... but i watch my potassium levels.. they say do not take a lot of advil, or do not take it REGULARLY and the same with other medicines which will raise potassium levels.

Yeah, same here, bootylicious. I have no side effects from Yasmin at all. It cleared my terrible severe acne within the first month and I feel the same physically as I did with any other pill I have been on. It is terrible that you had to go through that bad experience, kittikat. This just demonstrates how differently birth control pills can be accepted by different bodies. Though, I don't think anyone should be discouraged from taking Yasmin from that one case because everyone's body is different. My experience with it is a good example of that.

The only bad thing I've noticed is weight gain but I also had that on my other pill alesse and i'm just now only starting to finally be able to control a bit--with alesse I couldn't at all. :( But I have noticed small cysts on my outer area of my vagina and my ob Gyn thinks its due to the cervical problems I had but, they've appeared AFTER I had surgery for that and I think yasmin has something to do w/ it or my body's been on the pill too long--and headaches too!

I was on Yasmin for about a year. I went on it because the doctor said it would be helpfull for cramps. At first I noticed nothing i had no side effects just had to pee more from the diuretic. My cramps were just as bad as ever as months went on they did not get any better and I began to Slip into a depression month by month it got worse it I didn't think that it coould be from the pill, so I continued to take it the depression got worse to point where a day would not go by where I did not think about suicide. I also had trouble breathing somtimes and a weird feelling in my chest it just felt weird, I also had Lumps in my breasts. My doctor never tested my potassium ever and did not even warn of the possible side effects. It wasn't until I went to Fill my prescription and the pharmacist told me that this pill wasnt good for me and sugested that I do Some research. Well that Scared me, and I read all about That day I decided Stop taking it. Right away I began to feel better the lumps in my breasts went away, My heart felt more normal and my depression is almost non existant. I would really do research on this if you are thinking about going on it, not all doctors are going to tell you the side effects.

my sister and i are both on it and loveee it - has cleared our skin , regulated us perfectly and no side affects. Remember , ANY pill , esp one with hormones, is going to stir your body up, and its not going to be as if you arent on anything. ITS DIFFERENT FOR EVERY PERSON - totally dependent on your body and hormones and other issues/problems - certianly if you have a history of something or a specific bad SA, stay away. But that is true with all pills- some people take to it well and some dont. you will find 100 people who SWEAR by a pill and 100 people who HATE it.

I think the key is get inforned about your own body, get all the possible tests and then decide with yoru DR which pill best fits YOU and your history and body. :)

I personally like Yasmin I've been taking Yasmin for 8 months. Before that I was on generic brand Mircette, and in between that a 6month BC break.

I had side effects I had for the first few months:BIGGER breasts that were tender (my gryno said to cut down caffeine to help), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (that I have anyway) and perhaps some mood swinging. But nothing anywhere near what recent posts have said.

I think I had all this because I went from low-estrogen to no-estrogen to high-estrogen. In spite of the side effects, most of them temporary, I prefer it over the Mircette. No pill is for everyone, talk to your doctor.

Yasmin gave me horrible cravings and I ended up gaining about 15 pounds. I always felt detached and distant from everything, and I would randomly get extremely depressed. I no longer felt like myself, and it was quite similar to having an identity crisis. I didn't know who I was, I never really felt happy, and I was unable to wear my old jeans. I switched to OrthoTriclyclen Lo, and instantly started feeling like myself, smiling more, and actually feeling happy. The cravings went away, and I'm working on losing those 15 pounds. I haven't been on OTC lo for very long, so I really hope nothing changes as the hormone levels change.

I found this generic form of Yasmin on the Internet. Does anyone know anything about it? My doctor at the clinic can't prescribe Yasmin for me until I have insurance and gave me OrthoTri instead. However, I am considering buying generic Yasmin online until I can ge insurance for the real thing. Do you think I should risk taking the generic even though I can't find much info about it? Here's the name:

I am having some serious problems that occurred after my experience with YASMIN. My husband and I decided to take a trip to hawaii after many years without a vacation. Because I knew I was going to be on my period, I took an extra week to avoid it until I returned. My internist says that women do it all of the time. I had done it once before years ago with a problem.
I got to Hawaii and the trouble began. I lost feeling in both hands. I thought I had carpal tunnel syndrome. Next thing I know, pain in my joints start. I go to the doctor and I have an ANA test that shows I have an autoimmune disease. It's possible that I could have had a low-grade something going on for a while, but i think it was the yasmin that triggered all of the lupus symptoms I'm having now. I don't care what anyone says, I feel that YASMIN is responsible.

Hmm. Im reading about all of the chest pain and it concerns me. I have a theory about YASMIN and it creating a drug-induced Lupus effect. i have had lupus symptoms since I overdosed on Yasmin. CHEST PAIN IS A BIG SYMPTOM OF LUPUS.
Long story made short, Husband and i went to hawaii, i took extra yasmin to keep period at bay. got serious lupus symptoms. I blame yasmin. been off for 1 month and already getting back to normal. carpal tunnel is leaving me.

Don't blame Yasmine if you overdosed on it....overdosing on anything would cause some type of side effect.

I find it odd so many women are having these symptoms. Especially the thread starter, her symptoms started after she stopped taking ortho, which is what I was on for 11 years. I gave up the pill completely, and I have found links between pill use and seratonin levels in your brain, as well as vitamin deficiency.

So maybe her symptoms aren't just from Yasmin, but from stopping the ortho, like me. ?

Thank you all for posting! It is hard to decipher whether this was the reaction of my body getting used to Yasmin, or if it was the way my body handled my stopping the OTC. After my doctor suggested I stay on the Yasmin and prescribed me Xanax, my symptoms gradually went away. I have been on Yasmin now for a year and a few months, I think, and I don't have any more problems. I also hardly take the Xanax anymore too and won't ask for a refill when it runs out. It was scary to have those reactions in my body and not know the exact cause, and though I'm fine now I still keep my eyes opened for anything odd. And for all you ladies who have these strange symptoms I definitely urge you to discuss it with your doctor. Good luck everyone and thank you so much for your support!

I took it for 6 months starting in October of 03. I had horrible headaches, nausea, I was moody, and I had NO sex drive. After 2 months I called my Dr. and asked to switch but she said that she wanted me to stay on it for a few more months. I stopped taking it in April 04 (I got married in March which is why I started BCP in the first place). My DH and I decided that the side effects just weren't worth it. He commented to me that I wasn't myself.

YES!

And that scares me! I already have to take Ibprofen and pain killers daily , I do not see how it can be safe to take these w/ the Pill. Maybe my dr misunderstands.

I don't feel like myself off of that pill either--the thing is I am sick w/ a cold right now and I feel better and more myself than I have on yasmin....I just feel odd on it, so I agree that some of us (apparently a lot of us) have had bad experiences that it seems to me that dr's don't listen to us...

The amount of spironolactone in Yasmin is VERY small. Acne patients are put on a much higher dose, and if you are healthy and young it won't raise your potassium. BUT taking NSAIDs every day can raise your potassium and it would probably be a good idea for your doctor to give you a blood test every once in awhile. Maybe you could ask your pharmacist? I was taking prescription strength NSAIDs during my period while on 100mg of spiro and the pharmacist told me not to worry.

Hello,

I am new to this site and I have been doing some research on Yasmine. I have been experiencing a lot of abdominal cramps, nausea, headaches, and dizziness. I thought it was because I was pregnant, but I only missed twice last month and each time, I took the pill the next day.

Since I work a good hour and 15 minutes from home, when my pain started this morning, I could barley stand it. My husband and I have been stressing over whether I am pregnant or not and this morning was no different. I kept feeling, though that there is just NO way I could be pregnant.

I have been on Yasmine now for 8 months. It took 4 months for me to get used to it and I have had only 3 painless good months - with no severe PMS. Now, I am beginning to believe that my pain in the past couple of days, is due to Yasmine. I am going to take some blood tests today to rule out what may be wrong with me, besides pregnancy.

After that, I'll speak with my doctor.

I just posted about this on another thread. I was on Yasmin for 2 months & that was enough for me to get off it right away. I just switched to OrthoTriCyclen 1 month ago & am back to normal thankfully. The first month being on Yasmin wasn't so bad.. My breasts swelled up from a C to a D cup & I had very light menstrual cycles. However.. I also noticed a faster pulse/ heartbeat for no reason each day & my system felt accelerated or hyper. I had some mood swings the first month too but, it wasn't that bad. The worst thing was.. It became impossible to wear my contact lenses. I am used to wearing my contacts for 10-12 hours each day & never have any problems usually. On the Yasmin.. My eyes were always red & super dry.. Even when I didn't have the contacts in. Things got worse the 2nd month on Yasmin. I noticed that my whole system was drying out it seemed. My eyes were very sensitive & dry always, was vaginally dry, even my oily skin was turning normal & even dry on days. Wearing contacts was a nightmare & I couldn't get them in my eyes on most days. My pulse was still fast & I was getting nervous for no reason. I also noticed some tingly feeling & even numbness on certain days in my fingers. I didn't feel like myself at all on Yasmin & was even sad & moody on some days which is not like me at all. I finished off my 2nd pack of pills & switched to OrthoTriCyclen & am back to normal 100%. All my previous symptoms on Yasmin went away & I now wear my contacts 12 hours each day. I no longer have dry eyes, no vaginal dryness, & I am so happy to have my oily skin back. I glow again! I don't recommend Yasmin at all for any woman. I notice my body is much happier w/ a stronger dose of hormones like what I am using now w/ the Ortho regular.

Do you mean that you have difficulty now that you have stopped taking the pill, or are you doing well?

I also find it alarming that so many women are having similar symptoms. I will be seeing my DR on Monday to get me started on something else.

Hi Everyone!!

I had a horrible experience with Yasmine.Im 22 years old and started taking yasmine a few weeks ago. From day one I didnt feel like myself. I was moody, extra sensitive, lost my appetite and was nautious.I kept on bleeding which was really annoying. 11 days into the pill I was at the movie theatre and I got a sudden spiking headache.I then began to feel panicky.Once the movie was over I got up and began to walk out and I got really dizzy and couldnt form words..i was walking into things and my whole laft side of my body was numb. The dizziness and unawareness lasted about 10-15 mins..everything subsided except for the numbness of my left side.My gut told me that it was indeed the Yasmine.I then went home opened my yasmine packet and it listed all the sypmtoms that i experienced saying that it could be a possible stroke.I was then rushed to the hospital and they beleived I experienced a stroke.I was then placed in the stroke unit of the hospital.I had all these major tests done on my heart..arteries, brain..and i they kept saying it was me not the Yasmine. All my tests were negative..perfect all across the board.I never had any heart or any health problems of this nature so it had to be Yamine. Finally after 4 days in the hospital they finally admitted that it was Yasmine. They declared that I suffered a complicated migrain which gave me symptoms of a stroke or my body began to have a stroke and didnt follow through with it.SCARY!!! I have been off the pill for 4 days now and the numbness is going away and im beginning to feel more like myself again. The scary thing about this drug is my gyno asked me what birth control i wanted..i told her yasmine and that easy she gave me a prescription without testing potassium or telling me more about the severe side effects. This drug is potentially dangerous and if any of you are on it..Get off it!!I dont want to know what could have happend to me!!Im thanking God that Im ok.

Wow, I am reading all of the posts and am amazed. I have been on yasmin for about 5 years now. I have, within the last year or so, heart palpatations and a pulse of 120 or higher. I was put on Toprol and they said it could be from anxiety but i found that strange as i am not an anxious person. I found out in feb of this year that i have mitral valve prolapse and they just accredited my anxiousness, palpatations, rapid heart beat to that. I've had the rapid pulse for years and was just always told that that was prob normal for me. Now im wondering if its not the yasmin? It's so hard to switch and stop and start cause it seems like the breakthrough bleeding will never end. I've been considering the patch or shot or even the pill you take every few months or so. {removed} Just dont want to mess with my system, as it takes so long to adjust.

Hi Everyone!
I took Yasmin for three months, and during that time I was depressed, moody, angry, paranoid, and totally irritable. In short, I was far from my normal self and I felt awful. I also experienced vaginal dryness and bleeding even when I wasn't on my period. I almost broke up with my boyfriend because I couldn't figure out why I was so unhappy with him all the time. After reading these messages I suddenly realized what was happening. Since quitting, I have felt so much calmer and happier. I no longer get angry over tiny things and I rarely cry. I am so relieved that this problem could be solved. I have taken a break, but I want to try another birth control pill. Does any one have a recommendation for a pill that does not screw with your emotions? I'd appreciate any follow up pill experiences. Thanks, and take care!

Did they check your potassium level? Yasmin can increase your potassium level which in turn could affect your heart. Please have your doctor report your adverse event to the FDA - they are legally required to do so. This is how the FDA learns that there is problems with medications.
