I am so scared, will someone please tell me I am not alone in this. I had sphincterotomy for chronic fissure aprox. 3 months ago. Since then I have had at least 3-4 "flare ups",it seems everytime to be "hormonal/cycle" related.I saw my surgeon in March, after it happened the first time and he said he could not imagine why it happened because the surgery was a success (whatever!). Well, why do I continue to retear and bleed then, is it because the fissure has not healed completely ? I am just real worried. Thanks anyone.

Hi Diva. I am so sorry that you are still having problems. Please remind me, did you have a fissurectomy in addition to the sphincterotomy? Has your surgeon checked your resting anal pressure since your surgery?

No,I did not have fissurectomy, just spincterotomy. He probably should have since I have suffered with this chronic fissure for 15 yrs.,you can just imagine all the scar tissue built up. I am so scared and disappointed . He said the "pressure" was perfect at my 6 week follow up but with every cycle(hormonal fluctation)it comes right back. I told him I was terrified of rectal cancer but he asssured me I did not have it,just a common fissure, but the sight of red blood just freaks me out every time!

Diva, if I were in your shoes, I would seek a second opinion from another colo-rectal surgeon. Get a referral from a doctor you trust: your ob/gyn, internest, etc. I can't imagine why your surgeon would do the sphincterotmy and not do a fissurectomy at the same time.
I also battled a fissure and hemorrhoids for more than a decade. My fissure was actually located between 2 internal hemorrhoids. According to my surgeon, there was no way my fissure was going to heal with just the sphincterotomy alone. If I had just had the fissure and not the hemorrhoids, he would have done the shpincterotomy with a fissurectomy. Unfortunately, I needed the hemorrhoidectomy as well.
Are you having pain with the bleeding?
