I do not have dental insurance through my employer and need to buy some now for myself and my wife. I'm looking for some advice as to what would be the best type of plan and from who. I've looked some on the internet and it looks as though who ever wants the greater praise pays more for advertising and I can't find any good information on providers. So I'm asking people like me and hopefully I can get a response and some useful information. I was wondering if I should contact a dentist that I would prefer to go to and see what insurance plans he accepts so I can purchase the best insurance that fits his/her practice.? Thanks in advance for your response.

Hi, I am in the same situation that you are in. As a matter of fact I was just about post exactly what you have writtenI discovered your post. From what I have researched on the net and conversations I have had with local agents there seems to be only a few options. What you see on the net on individual dental insurance programs is basically not worth the money. They seem to all offer very low premiums and immediate coverage. But as I expected that type of insurance is too good to be true. They are basically "dental discount plans" which just offers its members discounts to certain dentists in your area. For example, if you need a root canal and the dentist charges $500.00 the discount dental insurance (if accepted by the dentist) would save you $20.00 or $30.00 on that procedure. So you are still out a lot of money considering the x-rays, anesthesia, etc. . From my research what I have found is Indivudual full dental coverage which is offered by quality companies such as Delta Dental, Cigna Dental, Blue Cross Blue Sheild, etc is the best, hether or not a company has an agency in your state. These full coverage Dental company plans are similar to health insurance plans. They have a standard deductible, a waiting period before coverage begins, etc. But they seem to cover a lot of services such as; cleanings, office visits, fillings, crowns, dentures, ex-rays, bridgework, oral surgery, etc. But this type of Insurance seems to cost quite a bit more. But I guess you get what you pay for. I hope this Info helps. I am about to call one of the local agents listed in my local yellow pages to get a quote. GOOD LUCK!! and GOD BLESS. Sorry about the gramatical and spelling errors this stupid computer would not go back and let me correct.

Thanks for the reply. I can't say it's good to see someone in the same situation but at least I know it exists. I talked to my employer and they offer a suplimental dental plan but it looks most like a discount plan. I guess I'll keep searching around. Hope you have some luck!
