Hi, I read on another message board (Not on healthboards.com)
that Effexor will help with the withdrawals and depression, has anyone
heard of this??
I am trying to quit Ultram and someone said that while trying to quit
ultram that effexor would work.
I am depressed along with anxiety because of having chronic nerve pain,
don't think that my pain will ever go away in my lifetime, but i hate being
on pain med's. My doctor did suggest before about going on a depressant for my depression and anxiety that i have.
I just wanted to write here to see if anyone has heard of this before,
because i guess that effexor binds to the serotonin and noreprinephrine
reuptake just like ultram does.
I'm going to ask my doctor about this.

kim...hi...well let tell you what happened to me when i tried that before you do!...im detoxing now from oxycontin...a few years back i was on methadone and was prescribed effexor for depression, i then did a rapid detox and never depended on anything again..until oxycontin came along...i started abusing drugs at a very young age..now im 29 on my 4th day no oxy...from 240 mgs a day to zip/zero...sick but hanging in there, the first time i tried to detox i went into medicine cabinet and took out the effexor, (this was in the first day or 2 of withdrawl) popped a effexor in mouth and went for a ride with my fiance to smoke cannabis (seems like its the only thing that makes me feel somewhat comfortable during withdrawl, and a little hungry although cant hold much food..)...once we got back to my place about 1 hour later i stepped out the car and took about 6-7 steps and fell flat on my face, just dropped passed out, doc said the effexor would do that, it does work for depression but i wouldnt take it unitl the withdrawls went away...anyway good luck!

I am new to these boards but am suffering with an addiction, I think to hydrocodone. I am still taking the prescribed dose of no more than 4 per day 5/500's for chronic back pain. I am afraid to stop, because I'm not sure how much of the dependency is physical or mental.

Anyway, I just wanted to give a warning for taking effexor. I was on it for about a year for depression. I decided to quit cold turkey as I could no longer stand the apathy that went along with taking it. Effexor is a drug that you NEVER stop taking cold turkey. I found that out after much searching on the internet. I had what is called "brain shivers" where it feels like you move your head and it takes a while for your eyes to catch up with you and they sort of tick back an forth for a couple of seconds. It was the most horrible thing I ever went through (amongst other side effects) and when I was finally able to tell my doctor what I thought it was and show him the info I got off the internet, he told me about the gradual wheaning off process. Never told me that before. I had so many test to try to figure out what was wrong with me. It was like having an ephipany when I finally found someone else who described the same thing that I was going through. I have gone on and off prozac without a problem. Effexor was a good thing for a while, but please if you decide that you can't live with the side effects from it, DO NOT stop it cold turkey.

God Bless
