Hi Abhair girl,

I am not sure if you are asking about drugs to help with the pain or drugs to help with the "D". As far as diarrhea is concerned two things will greatly help you: One is the use of fibre supplements (not prescription) - and the other is the use of calcium supplements (careful - unless you are sure you will suffer from diarrhea, calcium can make stools very hard to pass).

If you are looking for stuff to help with the pain, well, apart from taking active yogourt (yogourt which hasn't had the bacteria that created it killed), I don't know of any other drugs in Canada. Yogourt/acidophilus caps is also important to diarrhea sufferers, because of its ability to repopulate the intestine with friendly bacteria needed for digestion - that get removed through diarrhea.

If you've tried these ideas and they are not sufficient, you may ask your doctor for a prescription of Questran/colestid for your diarrhea. Both are used to reduce blood cholesterol but they also absorb bile and that reduces the water retained in the stools. You do have to supplement vitamins if you take these because they reduce vitamin absorption.

Cheers, Raju.
