Hi Sublime, Zanaflex is actually an old drug, The name is new but it's an older BP med. It's normally prescribed for spacticity rather than muscle spasm. As far as helping with nerve pain, It may help in the same way that Clonodine helps but it's not an anti seizure med like Neurontin, Topamax or Lamictyl.

I'm not sure why your doc would say it's for nerve pain other than the sedating effects may relax you and therefore give you some type of relief. Be careful driving untill your know how the med effects you. I used to use it as my last dose of muscle relaxer of the day to try to promote better sleep, But it didn't work on spasm as well as Soma and I don't think anythng other then genral anesthesia could keep me asleep a full night.LOL

Good luck, if you have spacticity or spasms, your more likely to see relief in those areas than from Neuropathic pain. Muscle spasm can stretch or squeeze nerves that passs though them so relieving spasm or spacticity may relieve some nerve pain from that effect. The sciatic nerve passes through the Glute minimus and maximus and periformis, so relieving one of those muscle spasms could certainly relief pressure being put on the nerves that pass through those muscle groups. So you may get some relief but your docs explanation of the mechanism of action isn't how the med may work. However your not the first patient to be prescribed a med, for off label use and with little explanation of how or why it may help.
Take care, Dave

Hiya Sublime :)

I take my Zanaflex right before i go to bed because of my fibro and to help me sleep. What mg. did your doc start you on? When i first started taking it it made me downright loopy which suprised me because none of the narcotic pain meds. i take has any kind of affect like that on me. I use to wake up 6 or 7 times a night hurting but it i take it and my night dose of oxycontin then i usually wake up only about 3 times. Let us know how it's working for you.

Well it seemed to take away my buring in my neck and shoulders the first day.Today it is doing absolutely nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He put me on a 2mg pill 2x's a day...I have since done some reading on it and found it is usually prescribed in 4mg form..My wrist and hand hurts like h&** now too...I have been like this for a month now<sigh>..I am deathly afraid of becoming addicted to pain pills..I have been only taking them 2 times a day now 5/500 1 1/2 pills at a time.It doesnt seem to stop any pain just relaxes my mind about it,so i dont want to take them .It did ease the pain in my wrist and hand though and now i am really hurting there w/out them!!!I have been diagnosed with moderate carpel tunnel and severe nerve damage in my ulnar nerve up to the elbow. They did an MRI on the spine and it came back ok so they cant figure out why i am burning sooooo bad in my neck and shoulders all the way across and when i look to the left it really hurts..its the right hand that is all messed up though.I go for an EEG test on tuesday and an MRI of my head...I had the EMG last friday....I am getting really fed up with this already!!I have enough pills in my drawer to kill a horse and yet i am still not right!!!Sorry i just need to vent today..thanks for listening..
