View Full Version : Air Boot Question

Yesterday 6 weeks after surgery I was given an air boot to wear for a month. I am wondering if any of you were able to exercise w/it, walking, etc. How do you know what's too much if you have no discomfort---this boot is so protective that I probably tend to walk around more than I should. It's so exciting to finally be off of crutches. But, I wonder HOW much one can safely walk----say a couple blocks over your lunch hour? I also wonder why do some doctors choose an air boot over the smaller casts? Any opinions are always welcome.

What kind of surgery did you have Ann? I had a Lisfranc repair and was also given an airboot at 6 weeks. I still have alot of swelling and achiness. I walk as little as possible. But I am back in martial arts doing strictly groundwork. (Blocks, punches, kicks from a side lying position, and of course sit ups and pushups on my knees. :D ) I'm actually testing for my yellow belt on Saturday...all from the ground, although I will be walking slowly through 2 forms in the boot.

Hi Kathy-----so do you walk as little as possible because of the achiness or did your doctor tell yu too. I had bunion/hammertoe on March 2nd and was on crutches for 6 weeks and now the big air boot for a month. I have picked up my exericse but am doing it on crutches so I don't overdue it w/my foot. I think it's great that you are doing Karate------interesting that you can do it lying down. I strap on 5 pound weights and do leg lifts on the floor. Good luck on the yellow belt---let us know how you do!! :bouncing: :bouncing:

I'm walking as little as possible because it hurts, and I really am afraid of reinjury if I do too much too quickly. But I didn't have bunion surgeyr.. I dislocated 5 bones in my foot in a car accident in Feb, and they are currently being held in place with 4 screws and a plate.

So I sure don't want to overdo and set my recovery back. :nono:

I will let you know how my test goes tomorrow!!! :D

I have a question for you all. I am in a CAM walker. Is that the same thing as an air boot?

Thanks,
jdm

Yes, cam walker is the same as an aircast. I'd say its progressive. I didn't put any weight on my foot for over three months. When I started weight bearing again my leg was simply not strong enough to hold me up. I progressed 25% a week and each increase was hard. After I was full weight bearing I noticed that walking or standing for awhile hurt my heel(which wasn't injured) like I'd been walking all day and my feet were tired. I'd say if it's ok with your doc, do what you feel comfortable with. A major problem for me is walking correctly with the cam walker on. I tend to put my foot sideways cause it kinda restricts motion with my foot straight. But that jacks my knee and hip so I have to constantly remind myself to walk properly. I'll be coming out of the cam walker full time on the 21st. I've walked some without it in PT and going to the shower and such. Walking with heel toe motion is really painful, but I'm confidant that if I make myself walk correctly everytime it'll be alot better in a week.

Mephesto,
Thanks for your reply. I have noticed that it is hard to walk heel toe in this too. I know that I should, but I am finding it awkward to do. I hope that I will be out of it on the 29th.

I think the CAM walker is different ----you can see a picture of the air boot on line if you type it in Google but I haven't been able to find a picture of a cam walker---I can tell you the air boot is hugh. But, I am not complaining---I'm off crutches! :bouncing:

You can find CAM walkers at www.breg.com. I would post the exact link, but as far as I can tell, the Admins on these boards always yank them out of people's posts even if they are in response to a direct question.
