I don't really know where to start, so I guess I'll just try to just right in. I'm 21 years old, and in Mid-Dec of 2003 I had my first allergic reaction. I started with itching on my arms and then my left foot started to swell along with my left hand. I went to an UrgiCare who assumed it was from Amoxicillin that I was taking a week before. They gave me a shot of adrenaline and sent me on my way. All was fine until the beginning of Feb 2004 when I had another reaction. It started with swelling of my lips, but assumed it was from chapstick that I put on the night before so I stopped using it. Then a couple days later my left wristed started to swell along with my left hand and fingers on my right hand. I went to an UrgiCare again, and they put me on steriods, assumed it was still from the Amoxicillin. I then had another at the end of Feb 2004 when my lips swelled to about 4 times their size (I could see them in my peripheral vision, and I normally have relatively small lips). My wrist began to swell, and seemed to continue to get worse, so I went to an UrgiCare again, where I got another shot of adenaline. Finally, I went to an Allergist in mid-March and he told me that it was probably the amoxicillin from Dec (he didn't do any tests) and put me on Allegra and Zantac (not for heartburn, but I guess Zantac is an H2 blocker). All was fine until Monday night. I had another reaction that started with my left hand being itchy, and then my right foot, which then progressed to hives on my legs and stomache, and then my joints started to hurt, especially my wrists and knees. When I saw my allergist originally, he advised me not to go to the UrgiCare anymore, but to see him if I had another reaction. Well, I called him on Tuesday morning, and after about 4 hours, his nurse called back and told me that they called in two more prescriptions to take along with the Allergra and Zantac. They put me on Prednisone and Vospire ER. He never saw me. I'M SO TIRED OF HAVING THESE REACTIONS. I'm not even convinced that is it an allergic reaction to the amoxicillin, if it even is an allergic reaction to anything at all. My allergist told me that if these meds don't work, it may be an auto-immune dissorder. Does anyone know anything about this? Anyone been through a similar experience? I'm so afraid it's something more that they are missing... My body has been so weak/tired throughout the past couple of months but it could be that I'm not getting enough sleep, but I sometimes I lay in bed for hours and hours before I can fall asleep. And I hate the fact that i have to take so much medicine. Most of the other people I talk to though think I'm over-reacting. Any opinions/advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't know where else to go. Thanks.

Not sure what you have, but I would make sure it's not an auto immune disease. Have blood work done. Have CK enzymes checked. I had a disease undiagnosed for over 17 years. Found out it was a myositis. Don't wait.

524: Amox. or Penicillin allergies usually go away after 10 days stopping. Easy to test
for too. The throat also swells. I had mystery swelling & hives off on & something
injested is usual problem + stress can trigger them too if you're prone. I have an idea
that they gave you `epinephrine' to stop immediate response. I also think Zyrtec is
for hives because it has hydroxyzine. I use 50mg Atarax (hydroxyzine) if hives start.
Also, Xanax not Zantac is used to calm hives. Zantac is 1 of the most `called in
wrong rx' to pharmacies. They sound similar & totally different. I had allergy tests = 0.
I finally found my reaction was red dye 40 in food/pills. Benadryl tabs (pink) has it.
Drs. seldom test for additives. I get mild rash w/ alittle or hives if alot in me. BBQ Sc +
red-Jello for dinner sent me to hospital. Next day I read labels & even the Pillsbury has
it in biscuits. Settle your system dwn w/ soup, rice, tea 2 wks then record what you
eat + pills. When you get a rash, go get an IgE blood test for histamine ck. Atarax will
help you sleep too. Can't take during day. Lips swelling is a big signal for allergy. That
normally doesn't happen w/ an airborne thing. It often happens quick w/ shell-fish &
some capsules in supplements are made from shellfish like glucosamine. (The outside
plastice cap). If U can, have a blood draw (IgE) next attack. Pred. Rx might mix results though. Do your lids swell up? When you swell, joints/tissue swells inside & will
knock you into sore/achy a few days. Maybe you licked the chapstick & swallowed?
Also ant/spider bites cause hives. Keep researching & check labels. Get a RAST blood
test & copy of results. Good starting place. Mouth/hand swelling is a reaction & U may
have to carry/wear ID once U find the answer. Drs. are taking this to lightly. Gd. Luck!
