View Full Version : Spastic colon - Any effective drugs?

Hi, I'm new to this forum. :)

I have been experiencing a recurrance of spastic colon which has become quite severe at times. I am consuming lots of fiber to help deal with this, but it does not bring much relief. I will discuss this with my doctor, but what I'd like to ask those who are or have dealt with the same problem is what if any medications are effective in relieving the spasming?

Would appreciate any info. :)
Thanks

Hi there - when you're talking spastic colon, do you mean pain with the spasms? The reason I ask is that some docs just like to call IBS "spastic colon" without really specifying what symptoms a person is having.

If you're having a noisy gut, and pain with intestinal contractions, the drug Bentyl might help since it's an anti-spasmodic and helps some people with the pain of IBS. You can take it in 10 & 20 mg doses - it may cause drowsiness and dry mouth in some people until your body gets used to it.

Good luck,
Katie G

Katie,
Actually I did use Bentyl when I first started having this problem over 20 years ago, but it was ineffective as were other drugs at the time. I'm hoping that maybe there are some newer medications which are better. I believe the spasm is the pain.

I am able to get some relief by using Vicodin which I have left over from my surgery that I had in January, but that's a pain killer and I don't want to use that over a long period of time.

Thunderbolt when you say PAIN..may I ask what part of your stomach bother you?? the reason I ask because I have the mild to severe abdominal pain, it may be IBS too  I am taking Donnatol and it help me the little, my pain right in the middle of my abdominal

It is not in the abdomen; it is up past the rectum in the colon.

Sounds like your sigmoid colon, do you ever feel it on the lower left side of your abdomen. Bentyl might help. If not, try Levsin. I still have pain, but at least I can get out of bed and go to work now.

Nope, Bentyl was absolutely worthless.

As I said I do not feel anything in the abdomen.

Hi,Thunder,i have same as you spastic.
In 4 days,i will see a palliative care specialist to get Methadone as a anti-pain medication. Some ibs sufferers have benefits from it.Apparently that is the best anti-pain medication available.

Hi, I take a prescription drug called Dicyclomine (20mg) when I get an attack. It makes me very sleepy, but it takes away the pain in the abdomen and cuts down on the number of times I have to visit the bathroom.

Dicyclomine is the generic for Bentyl.

Once again, the pain is NOT in the abdomen when this occurs and Bentyl/Dicyclomine was ineffective.

I am happy to report that I have been free of it for the past four days. :)

Yes Methadone.5 IBS sufferers are on it and they are IBS-free with it.
I frustrated that my docs are afraid to go on with my prescription.I don't think the side effect can be worst than IBS itself.

That's got to be the first time I've heard of methadone being used for something other then the treatment of heroin addiction, but if it works...

Thunderbolt,

You are the first person that I have read that used Vicodin for IBS other than myself. This is the only life saver that I have had. For some reason the Vicodin stops the spasms in my colon and constipates me which I need. This is the only way that I can live my life, travel, etc; I have been crazy, feeling guility, just thinking about taking such a drug but then realized that for now its helping me and I can live a normal life. I obviously use this drug with caution and am very aware of the possibilities of addiction so I am very careful. I discovered it by accident while taking it when I was suffering from shingles. It's not something I would reccommend to everyone. Your doctor needs to trust you before he prescribes a drug like this.
Good Luck.

I only used Vicodin twice getting pretty much full relief the first time and partial the next. These are left over from my surgery to repair a hernia back in January.

I've been free of spastic colon for a couple of weeks now. I get it on occasion for maybe a day or two, but this last time was for just over a week.

My doctor has had me on narcotic pain killers for the past four years for my IBS. Currently, I am on Methadone and it's probably the most effective one I've had, including Oxycontin. Not only does Methadone take care of the pain, it also slows the bowel and that helps get rid of a lot of the diarreha episodes that come on at any time. I urge anyone suffering from IBS to talk to their doctor about possibly going on Methadone.

Hi Director,
I don't have diarrhea but mainly painful spasms.I heard many miracle story with Methadone. The only doctor i found in Quebec city (who have the license to prescribe it for pain),is NOT ready to threat my pain because he think that MAY "the things worst".Anyway, where are you from?
Maybe I can see your doc, here the waiting list is long for the people.
I just wanna try Meth to see if that works for me.I'm tired of searching for a pain relief.

I'm in the State of Washington, so that would be a pretty fair drive for you to make, just for a doctor's appointment. Besides, I think he only has one or two other patients he is treating for similar problems. Surely you could find a doctor there that would be willing to treat you with some type of pain medication, if not Methadone. Like I said in my previous post, I was on Oxycontin for quite a while and it handled the pain pretty well. The only problem with it (at least for me) is you build up a tolerance to it rather quickly. It is a good painkiller though, taken correctly.

I know what you mean about the spasams though. I sometimes have those without any diarrhea problems at the time. I consider myself fortunate to have a primary physician that will take on and treat my case. Sorry I can't be of more help, but like I said, there has to be doctors in Quebec City that are willing to help with your pain problem. A suggestion...do some searching on the net and see what you can come up with supporting your case. Print it and take it with you on your next doctor visit.

Take care.

Hi director.I actually tracking Pain docs in Maine and Vermont. There is some(43, i think,in 2 years) controversials deaths in Maine about Meth who makes the news.
Maybe that is more though to get than anywhere.
How long it takes to get rid of the extra-sensitivity?I think that cause me spasms which give a feeling of incomplete evacuation which can be causing "temporary constipation".
I have heard that the US prescriptions can't be apply in Canada. That can be again more complicated.

Most Spasms are caused by lack of magnesium in your diet. About 70% or people lack enough of this important vital mineral???Why don't you try a Magnesium supplement --- It's Cheap and works for me!!!

Hey Spasman...I think you can have a prescription from the US filled in Canada, but you can always find a doc on this side of the border willing to treat you and write a script for you. Then you have it filled here before you go back into Canada. It would mean mostly likely a monthly trip to the states to have you medicine filled at a US pharmacy, but it beats going without. See what you can come up with doctor wise in Maine, New Hampshire or Vermont. Let us know how your search goes.

The heck is that i don't have IBS-D.
Do you know if Methadone can be effective with spasms and trapped gas?
Apparently it works but some M users have C and gas.Do you know if your doc prescribe it to others kinds of IBSers? :)

I had some problems 10 years ago. I was bleeding also for no reason and was completely checked out with a colonoscopy. I seemed to stop bleeding after the fasting for the checkup. As it turned out I developed a problem with milk intolerance, gave me gas pains, bloating and bleeding, stopped the milk and it went away, everytime I would drink milk it came back

How long it takes to get rid of the gas with your milk diet?

A dear friend of mine has severe spastic colon, and the only thing that has brought him any relief is medical marijuana. He got a card from his doctor to get it legally and he has no problems any more.
