View Full Version : PHEW...It's Over and an ENG Question

James9393

I went in for the ENG, MRI, hearing and the full workup this morning. I am in the Portland, Oregon area and was able to be tested by Dr. Dominic Hughes who co-invented the Epley.

I can't recommend him highly enough, kind, compassionate, latest equipment and thorough.

QUESTION: I have 30% loss in one ear, what kind of loss have other people had reported. THe one Epley worked 100% so now I just have to wait for the healing.

He said 6 months, what have others found?

He said the loopy feeling after the ENG would be gone in about 15 minutes, several hours later I still feel very weird and off....is that normal. How long does the air ENG take to resettle.

James

Brill james, glad it all went well...Took me 2 weeks for after effects of ENG to go...I had to be led out of there arm in arm with the ENT! But everyone is different...xxx

Hi James,

May I ask what they dianosed you with, was it bppv as you had the epley done? I am little confused. What are your symptoms?

I felt fine after the calorics part of the ENG (I had water) so fine I walked into central London and had dinner. By fine I mean my usual level of symptoms no worse no better.

BPPV

Evidently the two week old Epley was successful and found my right side had lost 30% function. Now the agitation is dying down and I am getting really sick.

Hi James,

I reacted the same way as emsybobs. Took me 2 weeks to calm down again. The night after the test was definitely the worst. I felt totally paranoid and freaked out that evening. Even the TV made me feel nervous. It was not nice but the effect was over 2 weeks later.

Ditto scott...all v individual I think and also depends how far you are on the road to recovery (not very - in my case!!!) :dizzy: . Wouldnt like to have the eng repeated again in a hurry, would you?!!!

Emsy....it would take wild horses to drag me into that chair again. Whenever I think of the room and those cups for collecting the water, it seems more like the sort of place they would do a lobotomy!! :jester:

BPPV, had a successful Epley done two weeks ago and now the ENG to check damage and Epely success.

This ENG was only supposed to last a hour or so. It has been 6 and I am really shaky and now sicker than heck....is there an end to this?

Really dont worry james...see at as a positive in that you prob have inner ear prob if you reacted badly - you know what I mean...Thats the way I looked at it. It will ease but dont panic...that'll make it worse. See it as a normal thing for this, if you have a prob with your vestibular system then that is bound to play havoc with it if you are in relative early stages of it...

Scott - ditto - I also feel the same about plane flights now!!

James,

Good for you! Isn't it nice to at least know what's going on?? I had Dr. Hughes also for my ENG (he didn't do my Epley, which worked 100% like yours), and I too can't say enough good things about him.

My damage was 22% on the right side. It did take another 6 months after the ENG to feel normal; he's right at that. I even have off days now and again now, and I'm in my 16th month, but certainly NOTHING like before and nothing that doesn't pass. I didn't have any ill-effects from the ENG. I was a little loopy for the rest of the day (I didn't have my ENG until like 4:00 in the afternoon), but I was fine the next day. Everyone reacts a bit differently, I'm sure.

Good luck!!

Hi Treefarmer

When you say you were mostly better in 6 months - was that after doing VRT??

Thanks!

No. I didn't do any VRT in the specific sense. My doc considered my damage somewhat mild at 22% (sort of on the line between normal and not), so just told me to stay active. I guess I did my own VRT of sorts. I do yoga, which of course helps with balance. I also walk a lot and while out doing it I made sure to look around a lot from side to side, up and down, etc. Anything that made me feel a little dizzy I did even more to get my brain used to it. Eventually everything pretty much settled down. I'm now about 98-100% most days. You should check with Scant5 on this board too about the self-directed VRT. She had certain things she would do when she walked her dogs like taking a few steps with eyes closed, or while looking in a particular direction, that are very similar to VRT. She might be able to share some of those with you.

Hey Tree

I was also a Yoga person pre-BPPV so you are Ok with doing the poses now....I am amazed.

Yep. I'm okay, though I don't do any hard-core inversions like headstand or handstand. I do do shoulder stand and downward dog, etc., though. My BPV actually came on in a yoga class while doing a lying spinal twist (sometimes called an "alligator" twist). I twisted my bent knee over to one side and went to turn my head in the opposite direction and BAM! The room spun hard. Didn't know what the heck was going on -- quite freaked me out!! I was scared off yoga for a while after that, but I reintroduced myself slowly and now I'm good with it. But like I said, I've not gone back to doing anything too difficult.

Hi, All!
I was tested at the Chicago Balance Center and when I had the ENG done I really didn't notice hardly anything and it didn't affect me afterwards. Actually none of the testing I did or the eye exercises made me feel any different afterwards. Went out to eat and pretty much enjoyed the evening. So what does that mean? The head PT who took care of me told me that I did not have any permanent damage to my inner ear and gave me several VT to do. Also am supposed to go to a local PT to have them work on my neck cause it is a mess after all this dizzy stuff. The head PT told me that I don't have any more chance of getting this back then the next guy once it is gone. He thought, tho', it would be gone in 6 to 8 weeks and it has been 9 weeks and don't feel near normal yet!
Anyway, just wondered what you all thought about my results!

Vicki,

I'm with you. They had me bring my husband to the ENG because they said I shouldn't drive myself home, but truth be told I could have. I had it late in the day and felt mildly woozy for the evening, but I was basically fine with no problems afterward. I can't remember your story; did you have BPV? I've read that 30% of the people who have a BPV episode may have it return within a year (I was one of those unlucky ones). The I had the Epley and things were much improved. Just had to crawl out of the trampoline walk and slight movement sensations after the Epley, which took about 6 months. I do agree with your PT that once the crystals have been displaced from the inner ear tube via the Epley that we are then at the same risk as anybody else in the population.

Today I had breakfast with a friend and she told me her husband was having some dizziness when turning to the left in bed. Boy did I fill her ear after that!!! In a perverse sort of way it was kind of fun to be able to tell her, and then him when he picked her up, exactly what was probably happening to him and refer him to my ENT for the Epley. I firmly believe that if I had known better to not trust my GP after my first bout with BPV (who told me there was nothing that could be done and it would just have to subside on its own) and I'd had the Epley then, I wouldn't have suffered the second bout of BPV and wouldn't have ended up with inner ear damage as a result. I felt great about being able to maybe save him from the same crummy 15 months of hell that I had to live through!! At least some good has come from this -- I can be the caped crusader of BPV :bouncing:

I hope you are doing well. Haven't seen you post in a while (scratch that -- just saw your post/update on the other thread!). We've corresponded before, but my name's a bit different now.

Your post made me chuckle TF as I see myelf as the inner ear crusader! Lol. A few people iveheard of through people are dizzy and there I am going throught he possibilities and telling them what to do...someone in my hairdressers recently got dizzy on getting her head washed and had episodes similar to this - I was like 'youve got bppv'!!.
