Since I am only two weeks out from my BPPV Epley and sicker than heck from today's ENG I am not thinking straight...so I need help.
We ordered an expensive ski boat in December just before I got sick. Due to arrive in two weeks. Has anyone been able to recover enough to use a pleasure boat after all this or should I sell it.
Our gym membership comes up for renewal in a week and there is no way I can work out. Has anyone recovered enough to do hard workouts? If I let it go it is expensive to renew.
Have to make some decisions and sure appreciate the opinions.

James,
Not able to comment on the boat thing, but what do you mean by "hard" workouts at the gym?? Certain types of workouts will be good for you in this post-BPV world you're in because staying active is such an integral part of the brain's ability to compensate. I'm not sure I'd swim, at least not freestyle because of the head turning necessary to take breaths (I'd be scared that might loosen up those crystals again!!). But weight lifting is probably okay. I've also done some of my walking on a treadmill, which is a little weird feeling when you step off, but not that much weirder than it is without an inner ear disorder. I'm even thinking something somewhat fast like tennis or racquetball might be good if you can stand it because it forces you to move around and to use visual inputs (keep your eye on the ball and all that), which might be good therapy for the old brain. I'd go ahead and keep the membership if I were you and just take it easy and first, let your brain catch up and reintroduce yourself slowly. Staying fit is important in life anyway, so over time I'm thinking it will only help. Don't push too hard in the beginning. Be kind to yourself.

Agree with treefarmer...I have vestibular dysfunction and have recently joined the gym...I do little bits...at the mo...about 20mins fast walking on treadmill (for me I feel AWFUL when I come off, not at all normal but it subsides within 5 mins) - I still do it as I think its all helping compensation...
As for the boat, you certainly wouldnt get me on a boat but im v motion intolerant with this...

Emsy,
Isn't the treadmill a trip!! For me one of the main probs was the trampoline walk or a sensation that the ground was moving under my feet. I remember from before vestibular hell (VH) that I felt weird when I got off the treadmill, but after VH it's even more fun. I figure it's one of those things I should do because it mirrors my symptoms so why not stick with it and make my brain get used to it!
Cheers

Yep, I use the treadmill too, though my BPPV seems to be pretty much under control and I have had 6 wonderful symprom-free weeks - though still get the odd anxiety attack "in case" it's going to start again. I was a bit afraid to start using the treadmill, but you can always stop it. I now do about 30 mins and it feels GOOD. So i would agree withthe others - keep up the gym subscription. Think only that you're going to get BETTER.
All the best

TF - laughed when read your post - I get exactly the same sensation - like ground rolling away from me - cant remember what it was like prior to VH (laughed a lot at that - VH!) but it certainly wasnt like that. I guess its a bit like the whole flight thing - normal people would feel a bit rocky after a 13hr flight but boy did I feel 400 times worse and it lasted a lovely 7mths!
I agree with the gym thing and treadmill - I dont like it when I get off but I am doing it for blinkin compensation!! I also find it hard to walk fast on it and not hold on balance wise. I can hold on with 1 hand but find it tricky with none.
Off tot he gym this aft - youve inspired me! xxx

Good for you!! What gym do you belong to? My husband goes to Riverplace Athletic Club, and I did for a couple years, but we now have a treadmill here at the house, thanks to an un-used castoff from my parents, so I decided to save the gym money and do my workouts here. As you know, Portland weather this spring has been great, so there's been dust gathering on the treadmill in favor of walking outside. In fact, my husband and I walked a half-marathon race this morning (only got sprinkled on just a tiny bit). It felt great. Keep up the good work. It WILL help the compensation process, guaranteed.

Hey T
I recently moved from Mt. Hood to Vancouver. I walk in any weather but you are right spring this year has been a gift. I havent been back to the gym since I got sick January 3rd. Tried to do about 20 minutes of yard work and came in pretty messed up today so I'm sure it is not time for a workout....or yoga.
Dr. Hughes made it sound like after the positive Epley everything is down hill - after the ENG Friday I am much worse off again. He said in 6 months you wont know you ever had BPPV or 30% damage...perhaps good doctor spin.

James,
What side of Mt. Hood? My husband and I love it up there, but particularly on the east side. We spent our honeymoon in Hood River and we've been spending a lot of time lately with friends who bought a cabin up near Cooper Spur. We don't ski, but just love the scenery. We are both native Oregonians.
I think Dr. H's comment was a bit of good doctor spin. It's okay to hang on to that positive thinking, though. Of course, he has no way of knowing just how long it will take for each person because we all react a little differently, but on balance I would agree with his assessment. 6 months after the Epley I was basically back to normal.
Barnsley, skywalker, and portlandmandy are from here too. Not sure on the contact info since it's frowned upon by the moderators here. Don't want to get kicked off this board, so you've got to play by the rules!

James,
Sorry to jump in here, but have been reading your other posts.
Firstly I am hoping that you have been coping ok today and I am sure that your docs are right, you will feel fine in 6 months! GOOD LUCK
May I ask how your symptoms started and also if you kept getting spinning vertigo type episodes and how they diganosed the BPPV.
Thanks!!

My symptoms started crawling out from under a desk and the next day I came down with some virus. I was mis-diagnosed by three doctors then properly by a PT using infrared goggles. Later confirmed by Dr. Hughes with some very sophisticated equipment.
