View Full Version : Recent flare up - abcess on colon?

First, a little background...I've been 'tested and tuned' over the past year from GI doc....colonoscopy, endoscopy, small bowel series, sonogram, CT scan, upper GI series - you name the test, I've had it. The diagnosis....? Hiatal hernia, acid reflux disease, esophoginitis, diverticulosis and ultimately; IBS. (This conclusion because my right-sided pain and blowing up like I was 8 months pregnant would not go away)

Doctor put me on Aciphex and Zelnorm.....viola! Along with these two pills daily and watching my diet, it did the trick, my symptoms pretty much subsided and I felt like my self again. :)

NOW I've had a MAJOR flare up. Tuesday afternoon, it started....stomach cramps (pain in my neck; don't know if that's related or not) and it just got worse. The horrible pain was in my left side, radiated to my back and I ran a fever that persisted for two days. I phoned the Doctor and he put me on heavy doses of antibiotics...Cipro and Metronidzole...(nasty stuff) Tylenol for pain - whoppee. (like THAT helped) He suspects a flare up of IBS, Diverticulitis or possibly an abscess on my colon!?! I go for a CT scan tomorrow afternoon. (We won't go into my frustration with him of doing his 'diagnosis' over the phone)

I am very careful with my diet and did not eat anything that would have caused this....

The pain that was constant for 2 days now comes and goes...sometimes it just comes out of the blue and is so severe I double over. The fever is gone. (Of course, I'm sure the mega dose of antibiotics kicked that!) I don't have much of an appetite; and of course, I'm really afraid to eat much of anything! Plus, I'm feel really drained and weak.

Has anyone ever heard or had an abcess on their colon - is this the same as diverticulitis????

I'm hard-pressed to believe that it's my IBS...this pain was much more severe - in another part of my abdomen and I've never ran a fever before with my IBS.

For those of you that have had similar experiences - please share how long it took you to get feeling better! I am self-employed and need to be feeling well again FAST!

Thanks so much! :)
