 I have an odd question for those that have already had surgery to remove a neuroma and have had to take time off of work. In talking to my benefit rep. last week she wanted to know if a neuroma is an injury or an illness? I guess it makes a difference for my disability insurance. I was doing real good answering all her questions about where and when, but I had no idea how to answer that. I did a little looking on the internet, but I couldnt find anything. My surgery is this Wends. I'll have to remember to ask the doc then.
Thanks,
Kathy
Thanks,

hi, I'm not sure about the injury or illness. I would guess injury thought, anyway I was wondering if I may ask you what kind of symptoms you have from the neuroma??? I was diagnosed with the same thing, but i have a lot of swelling in the ball of my foot, and a little on top of my forefoot, did you have any of these symptoms??? Thanks

:) Twright,
The symptoms that I had before I was diagnosed were intense burning on the ball of my foot, close to the toes. I had a feeling of my forefoot being swollen but when I would look at it it didn't seem swollen. Next it felt as if I was walking with a stone in my shoe, right under my toes. Now I have intense pain when I walk and even when I'm not on my feet I will get shooting pains near my toes. Now over a year since my first symptoms I can see the neuroma between the bones, and it is pushing my two toes apart in kinda a V shape.
I first sought treatment last June. The doc injected a steroid between the bones that was very effective for about 2 mos. A second injection in Sept. was also helpful, but I returned to the doc in Dec. with the same symptoms except I had a white streak coming from the injection sight up my foot. The Doc. saw this and said it was from the steroids taking the melononin (sp.) from my skin. So no more shots. :nono:
Next step was orthotics. Very painful, slightly helpful. But I had to do all this to satisfy the insurance company before they would approve payment for the surgery. Isnt it amazing how someone in another state sitting behind a desk who has never seen my feet, gets to make these decisions instead of my doctor.
Thats probably more information than you wanted. ;)

Ladyneon,
no that was perfect, it helps a lot. I think I must really have Neuroma now, because of my 2nd and 3rd toes are doing the same as yours, was it your 2nd and 3rd????? I will probably have to go thru the same thing as you, orthotics.etc. but I will probably end up getting surgery. This, from what I read is the best thing in a severe case like mine. I just don't understand this swelling, maybe I have stress fracture plus neuroma??? Anyway, thanks for the info, was wondering though if yours was 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th. Let me know how your surgery goes, I am curious, because I will probably do the same. Hope everything goes well. Good Luck

CJ,
May I ask what your symptoms are? Are your toes dividing a little because of the neuroma, do you have mild swelling? Is it debilitating? I hope your surgery goes well. Thanks

Hello Twright,
I have been suffering for a while since May last year. Have had 3 cortizone injections, which have caused a white spot on the top of my foot.
I have buring and tingling sensation in my ball of the foot foot constantly all day. Neuromas between the 3 and 4th metatarsals. I find that I must wear a shoe with a 1 inch heel at all times. I am in pain from the time I wake up until I go to sleep. Sometimes have to take tylenol pm to get some sleep. I have been very limited in my normal activiites. I do not like to walk much becuase it is painful as the day goes by I try to sit most of the day and only get up to do 3 or more tasks.
What symptoms are you having?
Cannot wait to have the surgery...
take care

For me:
What doesn't help:
Metatarsal pads
Orthodics
Advil/Aspirin, etc.
What does help:
Ice/Rest but is temporary
What aggravates it:
Standing
Walking
Messing around with my foot

CJ,
My symtoms are mild swelling on top of my foot, swelling on bottom just under the 2,3,4 toes(on the balls of my foot) burning sensation, or like a pebble is in there, my 2nd and 3rd toes is kinda going away from each other just a little(Lady Neon has this symptom, this is what lead me to believe I have a neuroma) I can barely walk. I am currently off work and on disability, r u??? I go to the DR. tomorrow hopefully she can start treating me. It's a long story. Hope your surgery goes well, please keep me posted. I definitely do not want cortizone shots. I have already had 3 in my foot from PF.
Ronald,
My problem is I just had ESWT done for my heels so I can't take any anti-inflammatories, so my right foot has just been thru He!! I feel better also with ice, rest.I'm trying to walk but my forefoot just can't take it and my heels on my right foot can't take it either. What r your symptoms?? Thanks

Those symptoms sound very classic for a neuroma and very much like the symptoms I had before my neuroma surgeries. The neuroma surgeries helped my neuroma symptoms (pain) a lot although I had much worse luck with other surgeries I had in my forefoot.

How ironic! I have just the opposite! My forefeet have been through He!! with surgeries so I have done a lot of heel walking off and on for the past 3+ years. I have been having heel pain lately and trying to guard my heels but my forefeet can't take it. I hope the heel pain is temporary and will let up soon or I will have to deal with that next. I will bypass cortizone shots for PF if they are offered. I had those in my forefeet previously. Did ESWT help you a lot?

I will be having my neuromas removed on the 30th APril.
Hi CJ,
I want to wish you the best of luck with your upcoming surgery. I hope you get some pain relief. Was it decided that a neuroma was the major cause of your pain issues and not a dropped metatarsal? Neuroma surgery should be a lot easier to tolerate than a metatarsal osteotomy. I have had both. How many neuromas do you have and where? My bones are finally healing from my last surgery with the help of a bone growth stimulator. My heels started hurting but that's another story that I hope will have a speedy ending. Take care.

If you have a severe case of PF, definitely bypass the shots, they will not help. My right foot like I said has been thru he!!.(PF,neuroma I think, athlete's foot) it's bad when u can't put any weight on your heels for PF, and none on your forefoot from neuroma. Did you have any mild swelling though on the balls of your foot?
I had the ESWT treatment on March 24th(painless except for the numbing shots) so it has been about 26 days. My heels feel about 10% better. The doc said 12 wks, so I am being patient. I say if your insurance will pay for it, it would be the thing to do. Also, if you have ESWT, try to take the maximum level you can when they are doing the procedure(dr. said this would be better) I did and didn't hurt me at all. Some it will though. If you have anymore ??? on PF or ESWT just ask? I just have the one for you about neuroma on swelling and did your toes seem like they were dividing apart a little??? Maybe I have stress fracture and neuroma???

twright,
My symptoms listed (in decending order).
Burning in forefoot (sometimes all day and partly at night) but better when I remove my shoes
Pain when walking, or standing
Forefoot feels like it's swollen but doesn't look like it
Weird sensation around that forefoot
I get pain and burning pretty much on the entire ball of the foot area, but sometimes it depends on how much walking I've done.
I don't have it right below the base of the toes though, my feet hurt/burn about 1.5 inches below the base of the toes.

Hi Fairieswearboots,
Yes, it was decided that the major cause of pain was from a neuroma. I saw a foot specialist that came to Bermuda and said that I did not have a dropped metatarsal and that the metatarsal osteotomy is a surgery that is not performed anymore. Too many people end up having the screw break off in their foot...
I will have the neuroma removed and exploratory surgery for anything else that is wrong in my toe. I do also feel like soemthing is also choking my toe sometimes or pulling it down to the ground...the Dr. said it may be a nerve trapped between a joint that is badly inflammed. I do feel like something else is wrong though.. I am hoping that the neuroma removal takes care of all my pain.....The neuromas are in between the 3 and 4th metatarsal approx 2-3. I also had the moulder's click which the dr. found.
take care and glad that you are doing well in your recovery...

:) Same for me as for the symptoms.. One other symptom that has appeared in the last few weeks is that I get sharp pains and cramps even when I'm not on my feet... I had to stop working last week, I just couldnt be on my feet all day.. I could hardly walk out to my car after the shift, everyone else would be long gone and I would still be hobbiling out to my car.
This time tomorrow I will have had my surgery.. and hopefully be on the way to easier walking. I'll let everyone know how it goes..I finally got my laptop online :bouncing:

Hi everyone,
Im just back from the surgery and it went really well. The doc said the the neuroma was very large. Also he had to remove some bone from the second metitarsal (sp). Im still numb so no pain.
Twright, Im glad you found out what was wrong, so maybe now you can get some relief. Did you have a hard lump from the stress fracture? The reason I ask is that my mother has a lump that she thought might be a neuroma from the symptoms. Same symptoms except for the hard lump. Thanks everone for your help. Time for a nap.

Lady Neon,
well I have just the swelling on the top(mild) and some on the bottom of my foot on the balls of my foot. Don't know if that would be considered a lump. They are also checking me for arthritis.
I'm glad your surgery went well and hope you will be pain-free soon!

Hi All,
any one know where Lady Neon is??? Would like to know how she is recovering??
Ronald, are you married yet?? How is the foot??
I am just about geared up for surgery. I was surprised that my Dr. wanted me to take 2 weeks off from work... From other posts I see some people have been back on their feet in a few days or within a week..
The Dr. explained to me that my neuroma is also trapped between a joint in the 3rd metatarsal near the bottom of the foot. I have all the symptoms of a neuroma with the click as well. This explains why I have so much pain in the joint and it was thought to be capsulitis, glad I waited for the specialist to come to Bermuda. Even though I did not spend that much time with him, he wrote a 4 page report on my problem. I guess that is why I will be off my foot for 2 weeks. I will have stitches in for 7 days, none weight bearing on crutches.
Can't wait to get this over with, so that I can enjoy my summer. Still a bit nervous about the surgery...
talk soon

 CJ,
Im still here. The recovery is going well. Trust me you'll be glad you have two weeks off. I'm one week today and I can get around to the restroom and take a bath by myself but thats about it. If im up much longer my toes really swell and get painful. Depending on what type of work you do it might be longer.
I got a suprise the day of the surgery. When the pre-op nurse came in to explain what was going to happen, she said your going to have a neuromectomy and an metatarsal osteotomy  I've never heard that word before. She said she would look it up and make sure but she thought that its the removal of some of the metetarsal bone. My husband of course said "dont you remember the doc told you he might have to remove some bone to make the space bigger?" You'd think that would be memorable (cutting bone!!zz) but I sure didnt. Maybe thats what is making my recovery a little longer.
My doc had my completly off my feet except for trips to the restroom untill this sunday, about 5 days. Keeping my foot above my heart and ice packs every few hours. He said that it was very important to how it heals. Hes not taking my stitches out untill next tues. almost two weeks.
Good luck with your surgery. (I think the black surgical shoe is much prettier than the blue one :jester:)

I have been reading the postings here with much interest and hope that maybe someone can shed some light on my symptoms, which sound very much like neuroma, as described here. The only exception is that my pain is between the base of the "big" toe and the one next to it. Can neuroma's develop there (@ the tendon?) Are neuroma's detectable from an X-ray?
I have had x-rays but they are inconclusive. My podiatrist thinks I have a stress fracture on a seismoidal (sp?) bone. However, I've been wearing an air cast for 8 weeks now with no improvement; except when the cast is on, there is no pain in that area of my foot.
Any info. is appreciated, V

Welbourn,
After serval x-rays, MRI, bone scan, blood tests. Neuroma's are not detectable on anything, as I have been told by dr's. You need a dr. to actually find the Morton's click or feel around in the problem area. My MRI read a mild endema which is inflammation of tissues. I think you can have a neuorma between any of the toes, but the classic is between the 3 metatarsal space. I have pain there as well, but most of pain was in the bottom of the 3 metatarsal in the joint area, which lead the 1st Dr. to capsulitis.
8 weeks in an air cast and no improvement is a bit long, I think it is time for a second opinion.....
A stress fracture should have show up on an x-ray or bone scan....Or there is a littel instrument that the podiatrist can use that will detect a stress fracture right away...running it along the problem area will detect it..
Hope this helps you..

Thank you so much for your reply. It is very helpful. What is this cool instrument you mention that can detect a stress fracture in such a non-invasive way?
Have a good day, V

Hey Welbourn
I have no clue what the instrument was. I remember it when I went to NY foot clinic where they had all the latest technology and the med student used it on me and told me if I had a stress fracture I would have reacted to it...Sorry i did not get the name...
take care
