Hi all,
I've sort of wondered this since I first came to these boards, but now I'm wondering it even more after reading Wowwweeee's thread about who's on this board. Does anyone else notice that there's a majority of people here from northern latitudes?? Of course there are a few who are not, but there seems to be an abnormal percentage from Canada, the northern United States, and the United Kingdom. Has anyone ever read anything about people from northern latitudes being more susceptible to vestibular disorders?? Just a thought.

Maybe it's because the majority of English-speaking countries are in the northern latitudes - Canada, States, UK. Only australia and S. Africa are down below. Is there anyone here from S.A?

Hi Terri
..."Has anyone ever read anything about people from northern latitudes being more susceptible to vestibular disorders?? "...
Nope have not seen anything like that(yet)......Did find this on the Govt NIH web page...buried deep in the vestibular area section:
The condition is thought to result from a selective inflammation of the vestibular nerve, presumably of viral origin. The facts that the disorder often has a viral prodrome, that it occurs in epidemics, that it may affect several members of the same family, and that it occurs more commonly in spring and early summer all support a viral cause.
Think that is prob true to some extent.......

Hi!
Something that seems to be common in most of the posts is the ones that have this tend to live in a humid part of the country and not real far from a large body of water. I do live in Missouri but it is very humid here in the summer and that is when it tends to hit in this part of the country. Seems to be lots of people from the UK, Australia, eastern states. There are a few from the dry regions but seems to be a few. Just thoughts I have had since I have been on the boards.

Hmm I actually think its just that certain people from certain countries use these boards...I have looked on other health topics and this trend continues...
The Uk is not humid...I simply think that its due to who uses the boards xxx

Thanks, guys. It was just a thought. Subs maybe you're right about the virus thing. Also dizzyinmissouri with the water connection. Aren't there more viruses around water?? I have a friend with MS and she said they're not sure why but it's more prevalent in people from northern latitudes (by northern, I would not include the southern U.S.). I just thought maybe there was something similar going on here (not that it would make any of us feel any better!!).

Agree with Emsybobs, its just that these boards are more generally used by those in the northern hemispheres. Log on to any of the 'health problem' boards, you'll find the same thing. Biggest percentage is always the North America's, followed by United Kingdom, think Australia/New Zealand scrapes in third with usually a handful or so on any board and only the odd one from elsewhere.

Probably because the weather is miserable during the winter, so we have nothing better to do than sit at our computer !!! :D
