THANK YOU everyone for your comforting words. I'm feeling better this morning, mostly I'm just very weak I would assume from not eating. The pain isn't that bad, which is good. I only had bleeding on the left side of my throat and that is what is sore along with my tongue from constantly pressing down on it for so long while trying to stop the bleeding in the emergency room. As far as being put under again, I didn't care, it was actually a relief, nothing could've been worse than the bleeding I had for over 3 hours. At one point in the ER I had 2 people trying to take blood out of my left arm (to see how my hemoglobin was due to all the blood loss) and 2 people on my right arm, trying to get the IV in so I can go into surgery and 2 dr's trying to stop the bleeding - oh, what fun.
The right side actually feels pretty good, which is disappointing in the sense, I might have been able to eat if it weren't for the problems on the left side. The Dr's think that there was possibly an underlying infection which contributed to the bleeding, which makes sense because I was behind on my antibotic meds because they made me so dizzy. Anyway, now I'm on an even stronger antibiotic 'clindamycin' and no matter how sick it makes me, I'll be sure to take it. Well, here's to 'no more bleeding'. Take care.
Rajaraja1 - don't be worried about having pre-meds before hand because of MVP, because I too have that and I was fine. Originally they were going to have me take the amox. capsules, but instead they choose to just put it in my IV before hand so I didn't have to swallow any water.

Hey everyone! I've been reading all of these posts for over an hour now, but am still wondering if the operation has actually helped to stop snoring problems. I am a 32 year old female and have developed enlarged tonsils. They don't get infected too often, but maybe once a year I get strep throat. My tonsils and everything else in my throat are HUGE, but do not hurt. I'm not overweight, but I do also have a deviated septum. Breathe Right strips help for my nose at night, but I still am snoring SUPER loud because of my throat. So, has having the surgery helped anyone with snoring problems? Please let me know!!! I don't have insurance right now (it's hard $$wise because I'm trying to finish college), but will get it if I find this surgery helps the snoring.

it x-mas eve.. and i'm cooking dinner for my family and right now instead of stressing out about cooking, i'm thinking about this upcoming surgery.
do any of the veterans think its a good idea to slowly start weaning(sp?) off of solid foods, and start decreasing the amount of food.. not starve of course but just have smaller healthy portions of food?

Okay so I am glad to hear that you are doing better dompiz. Well maybe in a couple of days you can resume eating. I am on day 3 and I am hurting really bad this morning I woke up with a really bad sore throat and horrific ear ache. I just don't get how it changes so drastically. I mean yesterday I was eating scrambled eggs, chicken broth and mac and cheese and today I couldn't imagine eating anything. Well I am gonna take my medicine as prescribed and hope that I can tough it through the pain so I can try to have an enjoyable Holiday. Well I hope that everybody has a wonderful Christmas!
To those of you having your Surgery after Christmas best of luck to you and all of you guys will be just fine!

rajaraja1 - No I would eat...I ate so much the 4 days before my Surgery which was Wednesday. Then yesterday I felt ok so I ate scrambled eggs and Chicken broth and mac and cheese. But to limit your food intake now is just gonna make you more hungry when you are unable to eat...so I say eat! :) :) :) :)

Hi guys, I have a question. I'm having my surgery Jan 6th and I have a weekend trip planned for the first of Feb. Is that a realistic time frame for traveling? Do you think I'll feel okay 4 weeks post-op to visit a friend?

raja, EAT! It will help keep your strength up for at least the first part of recovery.
Dop, so sorry to hear about your hospitalization! I hope it's not so bad when the new scabs form.
Hershey, I had mine done Dec. 6th and I'm leaving for FL next week. I'm not worried about it at all.
Merry Christmas, everyone!

This is day five since surgery. My days are fine. It's the nights that are very painful for me. Last night I put the mineral drops in my ears and slept on a heating pad. That did seem to relieve the pain. But when I woke up a couple hours after I did this, the pain was so unbearable... I have no idea how I was able to sleep through it! Of course, I wasn't ready for my meds yet, so I just sat up in bed, with the heating pad wrapped around my head and moaned. :o
During the days, I'm fine. It's a little uncomfortable to swallow, but I can still eat and drink fine (meaning soft foods still). My ears don't really hurt during the day at all, even when I'm napping. This makes me curious why I'm in such horrible pain at night??? I think I'll try sleeping sitting up in bed tonight...anything to avoid the pain I went through last night.
Oh and get this, my doctor told me that I really should only be taking one percocet pill every four hours. On the original prescription it said I could take 1 to two every four hours. The doctor said that really isn't very safe, and I really should cut back to one. I wish he told me that in the first place because I would have taken only one in the first days when I didn't feel as bad!! He said taking percacet in such high doses could cause liver damage.
I have to say these past five days have gone by quick for me. Of course, I've been doing nothing but laying in bed, and dozing when I can. I hope to be up and about by monday. I'll have to be, as my husband goes back to work, and I homeschool my 5 children. That's why I've been trying to take it easy this week. Oh, I've been an emotional basketcase the last two days... crying at the drop of a hat. Could this be from the drugs?

I know what you mean about being a basket case. I too have been crying at everything!! I think a lot of it are the meds, plus lack of sleep and nutrition. I am going stir crazy staying at home. I am not going to go my in-laws tonight for dinner because my throat is killing me and I am so weak. I hope by Monday I will be back to myself. I didn't realize the healing process was going to take so long. I thought that after a week, I would be able to do most anything. The only place I have been is to the MD for my post-op appointment. I am going insane!!

momto5littles-
I had my Surgery 2 days ago and am experiencing the most horrfic pain ever during the night while I sleep  . I woke up this morning in tears my ears were throbbing and my throat was very swollen. It almost makes me not want to go to bed for the fear of waking up and feeling that badly again. Well I am sure that you will up and running by Monday with hopes. I got up this morning made my self a breakfast of scrambled eggs and finally took a shower and got dressed in real clothes,,,,It feels so good to be out of pajamas. I would not worry about the percacet damaging your liver in that short amount of time. I took percacet before and had also been diagnosed with Fatty liver disease back in 2002. I have had no problems with pills that say they can cause liver damage as long as you are not on them for along time they shouldn't harm you. Well any other questions please feel free to ask me and I will be more than happy to answer them. Well Happy Holidays Everybody....Hope everybody is doing well. RAJARAJA1- Have a great Christmas and eat,eat,eat...you will feel better if you eat! :) :) :)
nlh4msu- I too have been a basket case crying at the drop of a hat I really think it is the medicines and the lack of sleep...I am hoping that It will subside in the next few days. I hope that you are able to get out of bed and move around it really does feel wonderful. I did it today and I feel like a brand new girl. :)

Raja, Definitely eat all you can before!! It will the surgery easier AND it easier for you to NOT eat afterwards. I ate the BIGGEST meal the night before an I seriously think it kept me happy for a day or two afterwards because I was so stuffed. The weird thing about me not eating after surgery, I wasn't really hungry...which NEVER happens with me, even when I'm sick or depressed. My throat hurt so much that the thought of food just repulsed me. Except for Jello!!! That was my favorite for the first 3-5 days. So refreshing and would melt in my mouth! Good luck, you'll do just fine.

minmin630,
so if you were me would continue taking two percocets as long as I'm feeling a lot of pain? it sounded to me like the doctor was saying i should cut down... but it's just now starting to get worse! 1 percoset isn't holding me over the four hours at all. maybe two hours, if that.

momto5liitles-
If you don't plan on taking it for a really long time then i would do the 2 percaset. I really don't think that taking 2 of them temporarily while the pain is unbearable will harm you. I think the dr may be afraid that you will become needy of them and will want to stay on them long and if u stay on them for a long time then yes they would cause damnage to the liver I say if u are in pain take the 2 of them how ever if the pain lasts more than 7 more days then maybe I would get a stronger prescription tha may be safer than all those percasets. Well I hope that I can be helpful ....well have a very merry christmas!

thanks for replying to me! i asked my doctor about stronger meds (one that would last the whole four hours) and he said percacet was the strongest he could give me. he said if that's not helping me, than nothing would. hmmm.

momto5littles I totally agree with your doctor because they only have me on tylenol 3 with codeine and let me tell ya that does wear off after only an hour and a half. I find my self taking it every 2 hours and not 4. I think that if u were gonna be on the percacet for a long time then maybe it wouldn't take the 2 but the fact that you are only on it for a short amount of time and in extreme pain I definatley would. Every single thing is damaging to the liver Tylenol,Motrin and more. I wouldn't worry about getting Liver damage for taking some extra pills for that short amount of time but I am no dr. so I can't guarantee anything I am just basing it on my own personal experinece. Well I hope that you can feel better.

Day 6 for me. So far, today has been the worst pain I've had during the daytime. Oddly, during the night the pain was not as bad as it was the two nights before. I thought I went over a hurdle and was on my way to recovery. Wrong.
I would describe my pain today as feeling like I have strep. It is very painful to swallow. This is the first day I have not been able to chew soft foods...like tiny noodles in my lipton cup of soup, or mac and cheese. I can only drink. So, I drink broth, hot tea, and atkins shakes. There is hope though, because I know this won't last forever... I'm on day 6 already, so hopefully just a few more days of this and it will all be over. There is my update.

Hello Everyone,
Here it is Christmas Day, Day 7 of my surgery, and I'm sitting here on my laptop typing this message... I'm 19 years old, and my usal Christmas is filled with joy and happiness... well not today, let me tell you. I'm in so much pain, I'm taking my drugs every four hours, exactly like I should be, and it only seems to help a little. This was our family's first Christmas we did not open gifts... I was just in too much pain... As I type this, all of the family is eating dinner, I'm so depressed, I love too talk... I want to just jump out of bed, and go eat with the family.... errrrrr I can't wait till I feel better!!! HOW MUCH LONGER WILL ALL THIS PAIN LAST??? Also, DOES TALKING MAKE IT WORSE? OR HURT AFFECT YOUR FUTURE VOICE???? I've been talking a ot (painfully of course) and I think that has made it worse... Anyway, I read through many of the posts... it makes me feel good knowing I'm not the only one...lol And yes, believe it or not... I can still smile and laugh, throughout all of this... thats just me! :) But, I can't wait, for this to end!!!
Happy Holidays Everyone, and Merry Christmas!!!
Thank-you,
Brandon602
P.S. I find chewing gum... helps a little bit... Any other suggestions?!

Merry Christmas Everyone. Well, I'm recovering from my second surgery much quicker than the first that's for sure. I actually don't feel too bad. I still can't eat, but I'm down to one Tylenol #3 every 4 hrs instead of 2. I tried taking the codeine liquid, but for some strange reason both times I tried it gave me the WORST headache, so I went back to the Tylenol #3's. It's not so bad now, because I can swallow pills and don't have to crush them anymore (my husband is glad for that). Christmas dinner consisted of 1/2 cup of cream of potato soup; certainly not what I'm used on Christmas day!
momto5littles: I hope you're feeling better soon, especially since you're on your own on Monday. That will be day 9 and everyone has been saying day 10 is the turning point - so maybe just a couple more days of pain! I'm on day 11 and even with my set-back I feel pretty good - no pain on the right side unless I try to swallow (as long as I'm medicated), but still that's a great improvement from being in pain constantly on even more pain killers.
What I'm really kinda sad about is that I won't be able to go shopping for Boxing Day specials tomorrow, oh well, there's worse things in life than missing a good bargain. :)

WOW, I can't believe it! Well, I originally was prescribed two things... Percacet and Tylonel with codeine. I didn't know my husband even filled the Tylonal with codeine prescription, so all this time I've just been taking the percacet. Well, today I asked my husband, if we still had the prescription, if he could go fill it. I read that it would make me sleep at least, and the percacet hasn't been doing that.
My husband said he *did* fill it, and would I like some. So, I took some, and I swear it helped me more than the Percacet! Yes, it definitely knocked me out...I slept for HOURS. I'll definitely be taking it tonight for sure. But what's even better, after I woke up, I noticed my throat pain was definitely diminished as well! so much so, that I was able to eat soft foods. I'm wondering if Percacet works differently on different people. Seems the codeine has more affect on me. :bouncing: Strange, as my doctor told me percacet was the strongest drug they could give me. Thought this might be of interest to someone.

Momto5littles-
I take the Tylenol 3 with codeine and have never felt sleepy or light headed until today which I find weird because I have been on it since Wednesday. I had a okay day I ate some soft foods such as spinach dip, mashed potatoes, stuffing and macaroni noodles. I am however in a little bit of pain as I am starting to scab...ouch! I do think that talking hurts the recovery process. Once I got past a whisper I started talking as I missed talking so much but what I did seem to notice is that when I talk I put more of a strain on my voice and make my throat a little raw. Well counting the day I had Surgery I am on Day 4 of Recovery and hope that the rest of my recovery can go smoothley as I will be returning to work next week. Well I hope that everybody had a nice Holiday!

Well today is Day11 for me, almost Day 12 and I am feeling SOOOO much better. I guess about 2 days ago I woke up feeling considerably better. The pain was very bearable, I could swallow, tlak, and EAT!!!! I actually ate my first real meal last night....chicken and mushroom quesadillas. I requested nothing spicy on them and ate every single one of them!!!! My parents were in shock. And most shocking of all....it didn't HURT! The only thing that hurt was when the night was over my throat hurt from tlaking so much. Now I notice that the most. My throat starts hurting after talking alot. I can actually swallow though now, versus carrying around my disgusting spit cup. I just wanted to post this for you all though so you know it WILL get better. My throat LOOKS so much better too. Most of the scabs are off and healed, not just the raw spots anymore. There is still a thin layer of white in the far back but the pain is NOTHING like it was. I have to say that this surgery is the most painful thing I have ever experienced. I go in for my 2 wk. post op on Monday. It is going to be hard for me to be civil to the dr. after he was such a jerk to me about the pain. SADIST I tell you!!!! Seriously, he was a real jerk and had no symphathy and was SO condescending anytime we tlaked to him about it. It infuriates me just thinking about it! I bet he's never even had the surgery or he would KNOW what people go through. Anyway, I'm a bit worried about going back to work. I teach 1st grade and we go back to work on the 3rd. Talking to 7 year olds all day is going to be VERY hard and will def. take a toll on my throat. All in all I hear you aren't fully recovered for a month, even though I'm feeling halfway decent now. Don't get me wrong, there is still pain, but now it is bearable. Good luck to you all......it will get better!! Now I'm just worried about re-gaining the 8 pounds I lost!!!!!! I'm looking pretty good weight-wise!

Hi all. I hope everyone had a great Christmas. I went almost 24 hours without a pain pill. I had to take one last night because the pain was awful. Yesterday wore me out; getting dressed and wearing make-up for the first time in almost a week and a half. I was able to eat a little turkey and sweet potatoes, but I think it might have been to harsh on my throat. My right ear is still hurting. I guess it is because the right side of my throat hurts so much more than the left. My husband said that it looks like the scabs are starting to come off. I hope so. I am so tired of hurting. I want to make it today with only Motrin. This is so depressing!! Normally, I am out shopping.

Hi everybody I hope everybody had a great holiday. I too went almost 24 hours with out pain medicine which is a shocker to me because I am only on day 5 of Recovery counting my Surgery date of Wednesday. It wore me out as well to get up the last 2 days and shower and do my hair and make-up and be a functioning person after 2 days of laying around in the same ol' pajamas. I feel every lucky that the pain ain't completely unbearable for day 5 I hear so may people say that day 5 was dreadful but not for me ... atleast not yet. I am still in a little discomfort My left side ear and throat hurt...however my right is doing fine. I think I over did it as well with the talking ever since I got my voice back I have been talking up a storm and I think that was my biggest mistake because I do find that my throat becaomes very raw and sore after talking. So I think I am gonna take it easy today and sit around in my pajamas, slippers and warm robe and watch movies all day and rest my voice. Dixieduke you should be ok by the time you return to work. I will be going back to work on the 29th just 7 days after My Surgery and I do alot of talking and right now don't seem to worried that so u shouldn't be to worried either I think u will be fine by the 3rd!

Man, this sucks! Just when I think I'm doing better I try to eat something. Then it really starts hurting again. I was doing alright and I tried to drink hot chocolate. That usually makes it feel better but not right now. It feels like daggers again. My left ear is the worst! Not even my oil and hot water bottle are helping right now! I'm just getting pretty tired of not being able to eat. I can't even eat soft food right now. I'm just drinking. I'm 9 days post op. Shouldn't I be able to eat something by now?!?!
Also, does anybody get coughing fits? It's like there's a dry spot in my throat once in a while. Then it "catches" and I start on a coughing spasm. It hurts like h***! I'm so afraid I'm going to aggrevate a scab and I'll start bleeding.
Alright, I hope everyone else is doing alright. When will there be light at the end of the tunnel?

I have been able to eat soft foods and am only on Recovery day 5 if you include the day I had my Surgery. Since having my Surgery I have been bale to eat some soft foods. Yesterday I ate some shrimp cocktail, mashed potatoes, stuffing and scrambled eggs and even a few cookies. I do feel very sorry that you are on day 9 and unable to eat...that must really stink. Well I do get that little cough and it stinks I do feel like I am gonna irritate my scabs but there really is nothing that I can do. I was also Asthmatic so they gave me prednisone to prevent the cough but that still ain't helping me. I also have just recently experienced the pain in my inner left ear and that hurts really bad and nothing will help. I am just gonna tough through the pain and hope that It will go away...well I hope that your pain subsides. Oh and yes there is a light at the end of the tunnel hopefully you can start to eat adnd that will help with the recovery. Well hope everybody is coming along and everything goes well!

I completely understand how you feel. I have been very shaky since I haven't taken any pain meds in almost 24 hours. I am taking Motrin every 3-4 hours, however it gives me little relief. My throat is hurting a lot, as well as my left ear. I thought by now that I would be at least 90% better. I have slept most of the day today. It is getting very old.

Hi
I've just been reading up on some of your experiences with having your tonsils removed. My tonsils were removed three weeks ago, so today is day 21 - i have been eating solids pretty much since day 2 despite the pain, as i was advised to eat them asap to help scratch away at the scab that forms - this then prevents bleeding. This worked for me as i have not had any bleeding whatsoever. However it still hurts to swallow and talk (particularly on my right side) at day 21 despite the ENT telling me i would be better by now!! My throat is still red at the tonsil site and it looks like there's some tissue that's grown there (like my tonsils have grown back!) + a small amount of scabbing still on the right side. How long has the pain lasted for most of you?

This is day 7 for me. I woke up feeling not too bad, thinking I was over the worst of it. Wrong. This day has probably been the worst so far. I wasn't able to *eat* anything today. I slurped broth and tea, and that's it. Cold stuff REALLY gave me an achiness in my throat I haven't experienced before. So, no more cold stuff for me. The warmth of the tea and soup seem to relieve my pain a bit.
Last night I slept the most hours (four hours at once) that I have since my surgery. Maybe that's why I woke up feeling not too badly...becasue I had rested well. I truly hope tomorrow is a turn for the better. My husband is staying home, and working from home. I'm grateful he can choose to do that with his job.
I have five kiddies to take care of, and I've been useless all week long...literally been in bed the whole time, and I doubt I'd be able to care for them by myself tomorrow. I can't even talk. that was another thing today... I was not able to talk at all. well, I know there is a light at the end of the tunnel soon.
On a good note, my recovery still isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I havne't thrown up at all, and I've had no bleeding. Always something to be thankful for!

Hey guys I am on day 5 and believe it or not It has been going pretty good for me. Like Kristi 32 said I ate soft solids since day 3 of my recovery and have experienced no bleeding and not really feeling scabbing in my mouth. I do still throw some popsicles and icecream and jello in to the mix to help soothe the throat. I have been able to sleep a full 8 hours which is great because I was unable to do that the first 2 days after and a couple days before surgery. I have stopped taking my pain meds faithfully I was prescribed Tylenol 3 (liquid of course) I use to take it every 3 hours and now I am down to once in the morning and once at night. I however have had some weird side effects since doing that I have had some dizziness and shakes is anybody else who is gradually being weined off the meds experiencing this? Well I am still not fully healed I have a little bit of scabbing on the left side of my throat and have a earache on the left side as well. I am writing this because so far over all this has not been as bad of a experience as I anticipated...I say so far because I am fully aware that this is a long healing process and that the worse may be yet to come but I am just trying to stay optimistic. Well to those of you having the Surgery soon I want to say good luck and things will be ok. To those of you who are trying to recover I hope that you guys are feeling better and that the recovery process is going as well as mine has!
RajaRaja1- I had Surgery at 7:30 in the morning (but had to check in by 6:00 a.m.) and was discharged by 12:00 in the afternoon. I was there a total of 6 hours but that was with registering,Surgery and Recovery and then some down time. Oh yea plus I am a asthmatic going in to Surgery and had a hard time breathing following the anesthesia and was on a lot of Oxygen (nasal cannula and the mask that goes over your mouth and and nose) so they kept me longer to monitor that... you shouldn't be at the Hospital that long...Well good luck and stay positive all will go well~ :) :) :)

Hi, all!
First, I want to thank everyone for their posts. I wish I would have found this site before my surgery. I had my surgery on 12/20 and my body feels fine, except a need for more sleep! The reason I'm writing is that I'm still feeling discomfort when I eat and drink. It really hurts! How long should this last?
Also, I've been reading about scabs forming? What do these look like? The only familiarity I have with scabs are scabs on my knees and I'm thinking that wet scabs look different. Can someone help me?
Again, thanks for everyone's posts! I wish those of you who haven't had their surgery yet, the best of luck! My prayers are with you!

Hi, I had surgery the same day as you. I'm almost 32 years old. If you go back a few pages in this thread, you can see I've left my "diary" each day of my recovery.
As you'll read, I am still not recovered. I feel worse today than I did the day after my surgery. The first three days went by VERY well. I was thinking, "this is a peice of cake!". Well, after day three, it went down hill. The whole thing is still not as bad as I thought it would be though. Only a few times did I think it was worse than strep. Anyway, today I could only drink, I couldn't even eat soft foods. So, to answer your question, I think it's normal. I have no idea what the scabs look like, because I don't care to see them myself. ;) I haven't even looked at my throat... it would just grosse me out.
Well, hope both of us feel better tomorrow!

oo and good to know that we are all around the same age here.. i'm 30
i believe i might have posted this already but just in case..
my best friend had her tonsillectomy last novemeber the same time my doctor was considering surgery for me. she was out for 3 weeks and hated every minute of it. she told me that if i could wait it out.. not to opt for surgery. fast forward a year later and she told me that it was all SOOOO WORTH IT!!! she hasn't been sick as often and super happy not to deal with food particles getting stuck in those tonsil caves that some of us have.
so.. it gives me hope
thanks everyone for sharing
