Hi everyone. Has anyone suffered a fracture to the navicular bone in their foot? If so, what was the treatment (surgery, cast) and how long did recovery take (NWB, PWB, FWB, boots, PT, all that stuff). Any info you can give me would be helpful.. I have a friend who is looking for all the info she can get. Thanks!

I had to find my password to sign in and answer. Do tell your friend to take care with this injury and follow all directions. I had an injury that was missed. After serveral year my foot failed and became deformed and painful. I am now at the end of 2 and 1/2 years of surgery (5) total to rebuild the foot. Seven different joints have been fused.

I fractured this very bone in my foot about 3 weeks ago. I went to the emergency room and they sent me to an orthopedic dr. He issued a F4 fracture boot. It goes up to my knee. I am allowed to remove it to bathe and sleep. I dont remove it for sleep because the foot is too sensitive yet. I will wear it for 4 weeks. The dr. told me that if I had pushed it further a tad more I would be having surgery to have a pin put in it. Hope this helps.

I am glad to hear that your doctor caught this. Do take care and follow all directions. Fianally after 2 1/2 years I do not have to go back.

Hi, i fractured my navicular bone in my foot just before christmas last year. I went to the orthopedic doctor and i had a cast on my foot for 12 weeks. Its been about about a month and a half since ive had the cast off and i can walk normally but after i exercise on it, i feel a bit of pain in my foot when it starts to cool down. If you have any other questions or more detail just ask and ill be more than happy to help as i know there not much info on the net about fractured navicular bones.

Were you in a walking cast, or NWB for the 12 weeks? How did your fracture occur? Any info you can give me would be nice. Thanks!

i was in a non-weightbearing cast for 9 weeks, then a walking cast for 3 weeks. I broke it by jumped off a grandstand onto a basketball court which was about 4metres high. Pretty stupid! With broken naviculars the usual process is to a have a cast on for about a month, have another x-ray to see if the bone is healing. As the navicular bone is a slow healing bone due to lack of blood flow to that area of the foot. If it doesn't heal then surgery is required which involves pins in pretty sure. If you don't need surgery then its takes 3-4 months to heal. Im pretty sure putting weight on the foot is not advised until the bone starts to mend back together.
