Yesterday I went to my dentist for my yearly checkup. My mom and I mentioned the TMJ to him again and he said he has never treated someone as young as me (15) but he said he would make a night guard for me so he took impressions and stuff. Teh one he is making for me is about $100 and he said looks like a boxing mouth guard and when I bite down it will just squish out. How is this supposed to break me from my habit (Major clenching and minor grinding)?? Sorry if it sounds dumb but i am a little confused!

Hi:
You know, I'm not sure they even really know how to break people from clenching and grinding, well at night anyway. I don't think I have problems with clenching but I am a grinder. I have myself trained so I don't have a problem with it during the day but I sure can't be aware when I'm asleep. I haven't heard of the type of splint you are talking about though so I can't comment on that. My guess is that he feels you won't damage your teeth further because the splint in soft but that is just a guess. Let us know how it works when you get it ok.

I got back from the Dentist. It hasn't a bad experience so far. It fits well. I was wearing it earlier however and my jaw was sore after about an hour or so....is this normal....maybe my jaw is in a different position. He said to wear it at night for about a month and then if it was still bothering me keep it on for another few months to break the habit. I will try to keep you posted!

artbuggy3,
just wanted to wish you luck! my regular dentist made me a soft splint when i first got diagnosed with the tmj and it definitely helped for awhile.
i hope the splint helps you stop the clenching. for me it only made me clench worse. i think i'm going to get one of those nighttime alarm things.

When I woke up my back molars were sore while in the splint but after I took it out they were fine hmmmm.....anyways I havn't had any pain....yet! Hopefully this will help.....even just a little will be great.
