View Full Version : 2 questions..

Hi, I'm pretty new to this board, and I just wanted to ask 2 questions to see if anyone else can give me any advice/experiences on them.

Firstly, I just quickly read through the first couple posts and saw something about ocular migraines...i'm not sure what those are, but I've been getting these headaches/fevers lately especially when I've been working in front of the computer all day long. Is this what an ocular migraine is? (I always get the fever part..) and what can I do (other than stay away from the computer) about it?

My second question is - has anyone here had or knows anything about lens replacement surgery? I have extreme astigmatism and lens dislocation in both eyes...so much so that as of now, no prescription is helping me (ie - glasses/contacts have almost become useless...). I have been to several doctors around me and they all tell me that surgery isn't an option right now because it's not "bad enough" to risk...but for me, it's pretty "bad" in taht it's really affecting my day-to-day activities. I'm going to johns hopkins in may to see someone there who has a lot of experience with lens surgery...i'm hoping that she will offer to do it. while on one hand i do really want this surgery, i know almost nothing about it....if someone has any info, that would be a great place to start

No clue on your first question

Your second I've done very little talk with my doctor about this because I'm not a canidate. I had my lenses removed when I was a few days old due to blood clots. (and with a heavy duty perscription I function just fine without them) I guess your doing what I would suggest (Finding an experienced doctor in this area) Just make sure to write down all your questions you have before you go so you don't forget them. Also they might be able to give you a name of a successful patient (Don't count on it but they might) in which case you could talk to them about their experience :D....

They'll go through their proceedures on what happens during/after the surgery before you even headed down that road. So don't worry about it :D

Good luck!

Piggy: I've never heard of fever with a migraine. This post will tell you about migraines:

Your lens removal would be more complicated than cataract surgery because of the displacement. Is it the astigmatism that is causing the dislocation, or are they unrelated? I don't know much about this--only that the lens is contained in a membrane and much of the success of replacing the lens with an IOL depends on the condition of that sac to hold it in place.

I'm assuming you know there is laser surgery for astigmatism.

I would advise you to research lens replacement surgery and have specific questions prepared for the doctor at John Hopkins. Ask her to explain things more thoroughly to you, since you've seen several doctors and admit to not knowing much about this procedure.

Good luck to you.

Thanks for your replies...I will start writing down all the questions i have because I always tend to forget when I'm actually in front of the doctors.

Dakota: One more question for you...When you say you function ok without your natural lens, does that mean you are able to see pretty clearly with glasses/contacts? I'm thinking that because of my dislocation, new lenses might not stay in place, so I was wondering if it might be better for me if the lenses were taken out altogether. I guess I'll have to ask that too. But thank you for your insights. I appreciate it.

Hopefully after my appt. in may, I'll be able to update with some good news. Thanks :)
