What are the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome? Is it possible to get it in the beginning of the thumb, just above the inside wrist.
My mother was in a car accident and injured her neck and back and now that she is back at work, she works lifting boxes and packages all day. Her neck often hurts her. Is it possible that this can cause carpal tunnel? and what are any other symptoms of this?
If so, What can be done?
Thank you in advance for any replys.

Hello
The nerves that run down to our fingers start in the neck, so you're quite right, a neck injury can cause CTS symptoms. We've got the median nerve which supplies our thumb, index, middle & part of the ring finger so any pain, tingling or numbness to these fingers could possibly be caused by what happened to your mother.
Lifting boxes all day alone could cause CTS - anything repetitive. She should get herself checked out by a doc in case the problem gets worse.
Best wishes.

Thank you. Do you know of any more possible symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? I know she told me that sometimes in the morning she wakes up and her fingers are semi-numb/tingling. Could this be another symptom?

I have severe nerve damage and moderate carpel tunnel in my right hand.Pretty severe pain in my neck and shoulders along w/burning..
I was a painter for 6 yrs{scoffolding setup breakdown, ladders, heavy buckets.holding a brush all day}Then i took a break for a while and took care of older people.{still had bouts with pain i nmy hand on and off}Then i started working at a diner as the cook..{dishwasher..server...prep..clean up every day}I just recently lost my job because i could no longer perform!!!
I lifted a very very heavy bucket of 50lbs of potatoes off the stove one day and just lost all feeling in my legs and put it down immediately!!I had some slight burning already i truely believe this just made whatever was going on even worse!!!! I went downhill after that day!!!!
I woke up with numb fingers pinky and ring finger that pregressed to the whole hand eventually{nerve damage}pain shooting up to elbow from the ND as well!!!...I also have shooting pains in my thumb and palm of my hand and wrist..{cpt}..These are my symptoms.Hope it helps you to help your mom!!!.
Havent had surgery as of yet...Been going on for about 2 months already...going to docs having tests and soon hopefully this nightmare will be over and i can get back to working..somewhere that hopefully i wont have to do any major lifting...best wishes to your mom..I think you must be a wonderful kid to be checkin stuff out for her :)

Just a curious question...so if they fingers are not numb and they are not affected, then any type of nerve pain on the palm of the hands or wrist/arm area is not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome???
I guess mines is not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. But, I am sure it is some kind of nerve pain. Although I might say that these last couple of weeks, my situation is improving. I really hope it was due to some stress and that it will heal itself.
