Quick question - after bunion surgery, are you supposed to still feel the bunion bone? let me clarify because this might be confusing... so the side of my foot where the bunion used to be is fine...but before surgery, the bunion was so bad that it kinda stuck out at the top and bottoms of my feet too, and that's where it hurt me the most...but the bone right now (post-op) still feels pretty big on the bottom of my foot...so much so that when i lay my foot completely flat, that bone still "hurts"/feels tight/protrudes up so that the top of my foot shows the bump. is this normal?? hm... i'm not sure how the surgery works, but do they usually shave off some of the bottom so that it lies flat? or is this just due to swelling?

I know mine was pretty swollen after surgery and was and is still abit tender under the joint. I am 8 weeks + post op and kinda feels like there is something extra under there. The Dr. checked and said there was nothing out place. I think it will just take some time to get back to normal.

Most likely it's swelling if it feels like you're walking on a golf ball. It can take months to go down. X-rays would show whether the bones are in alignment and it seems they usually like to re-x-ray you at about 5-6 weeks just to be sure.

Piggy  ,
I have the same feeling on the ball of my foot.I have been to the Doctor for xrays. My new Doctor says that when I had my bunion surgery it was repaired too tight. Does your toe stick up off the floor at all? I have to go back in and have surgery #3 on my right foot to relieve some of the tightness. He is going to cut the bone in my toe and put a pin in. This will allow my toe to lay flat and my sesimoid bone will hopefully move back in to place where it is suppose to be. Keep an eye on that bump :)

Thanks for that info, Sue. I know that I have a removable screw in this toe (to be removed sometime in the future). Do you think that might have anything to do with it? I will mention this to my doc when i see him next week. I hadn't really noticed this before this week and my doctor had said everything looked fine on teh xrays... oh and just one more thing... how many weeks were u at when you found out about this? hopefully mine is just due to swelling and i will not need another surgery. thanks again!

 Well, my original surgery was in Nov of last year and it was right about at 8 weeks post op that I noticed a small bump on the ball of my foot.Doctor #1 had thought that it might be a cyst from the screw.Like a reaction. So when it didn't go away he finally decided to take both screws out in Mar. of this year. He said that maybe taking the screws out would also make my toe lay flatter, but NOOOOO the problems are still here.So last week I decided to see Doctor #2 and he took xrays, what a mess my foot is. In the xray it shows that my joint does not line up and you can see where the sesamoid(sp) bone is messed up also.I wish I had found doctor #2 first and I don't think I would be facing all of these problems.
