I have been referred to a neurologist for my neuropathy that started in my ankle and has moved to both feet now. It is a five week wait for an appointment, only two weeks left to wait! I am on neurotin(200mg) at bedtime which dulls the pain enough to sleep, however during the day I have been reduced to being able to wear only birkenstocks which are fine for my feet, but horrible for my back. I have a bulging disk in my lower back, my neuropathy is sensory so therefore separate from my back problem. I would love to know what others find that work, can't wear shoes at all and I can't work barefoot. I don't have any diabetes, thyroid problem, alcohol abuse, HIV that lead to this, still a mystery to me, help with some advice on footwear would be great..............

I wish I could offer you some advice, but I can't wear shoes either. There's just no way. My feet hurt too much. I'll be watching this topic in case someone has any advice. Good luck to you.

In my experience, people with neuropathic pain usually require over 1000mg/day for adequate control of symptoms. The dose needs to be titrated up slowly due to side effects. Don't be suprised if that's what the neurologist recommends. :-)

I have such pain in both my feet!
I want you to be careful with the Neurontin.
There is a whole class action lawsuit against Pfizer.
Please do the research as I do not want to sway you either way.
I have chosen to live with the pain.

I take 2400mgs of Neurotin a day. If I didn't I wouldn't be able to live. I'm not joking. I don't care about the lawsuit. I thought about it before I started taking it, because I saw the advertisement about an unusually high number of people committing suicide. You know what? People taking Neurotin aren't being treated for a hang nail. They're in terrible pain. People in terrible pain frequently commit suicide. I'll take my chances and get the relief, however small it is. It's not the Neurotin causing people to kill themselves, it's the pain. Just my honest opinion.

Thanks to everyone for their replies, I haven't had any bad side effects with neurontin other than a little dizziness, I too will do whatever it takes to get through the day with minimal pain. The initial pain I had with this was unbearable, if I had to live with that everyday I might think suicide was the answer, as it is now I am always aware of it but I can function and go to work, etc.

I have found that SAS shoes help. They are soft, but provide good support.
Would also recommend some intersoles that provide more cushion. I am also taking a high dose of Neurontin and it helps some.

I'm in the same boat with the rest of you . My feet hurt so bad that I can hardly stand it. The pain started on the bottom of my right foot , then the left foot started but not quite as bad as the right. Also the entire foot feels very sensitive , I "feel" my socks and my shoes all the time. I feel them on my feet and also can only wear some type of tennis shoe that has a cushioned heel and that even hurts. I have to tie them tight or they feel like they will fall off or something. I can't describe it. I cannot walk barefoot at all my feet hurt so , I can't wear any shoes but some sort of lace up shoe with a cushioned insole and still they hurt. Then next I had terrible pain in both calves. I've had the foot pain for several yrs and the calf pain for one yr, constant. I went to the Dr and went to the Dr and got no answer. My feet and calves hurt standing, sitting, walking , all the time , no matter what. Finally in desperation I tried a massage therapist that worked only on my feet and calves . It felt good but did not help the pain. However I developed a very low back ache in the process of the massage ,though the girl never touched my spine. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I went back to the Dr and he sent me for a CT scan. It showed I had spinal stenosis and pseudoclaudication. That is why my legs and feet hurt so . Usually it starts in the back but mine started in the feet and legs. Same symptoms as claudication, caused by clogged arteries , but it is false claudication , caused by my back which doesn't even hurt all that bad. Good luck on the shoe search. I will look for a Shoe Solutions Store but I am in rural TX so I doubt I'll find one. I have few shopping places. Good luck to ya'll. Lia

I wear hush puppies bounce sneakers. They have some anti-gravity feeling at the bottoms, and they help a ton.

I was on neurontin a few years back, it caused me a great deal of depression and did absolutely nothing for the pain, with multiple medical conditions anyway I chose to stick with the analgesics for awhile. Right now I go to physical therapy and take mild narcotics, they don't kill the pain so much as they make you not care about it for awhile.

I've had painful neuropathy for years and have spent years looking for the right foot wear. I buy special socks, shoes and slippers to wear and it seems to work. My choice for around the house is just oversize heavy socks but very expensive and they wear out in a couple of months.
I feel that reuropathy causes the muscles in your feet to lose it's shape and strength and you end up with flat feet i feel this because i went from a 12-d shoe to a 12-eeeeee shoe (that's 6e wide) and i can't find a wider shoe or i would order it. The shoe i wear has to be very light in weight and have a soft arch. I wear the ultra-walker that i order from wissota trader.
The socks i order from healthy living and footsmart. The slippers has a tongue with velcro all the way to the toe so you can adjust the width as much as you like. For the ladies that can't wear a shoe, have you tried mutlux (it's a sock with a sole)? I hope this helps some of you.

Thanks to everyone for the help and suggestions on shoes, I have been to neuro and am waiting for all of the blood work results to come back. Since I am "new" to this and had never heard of neuropathy until 3 months ago my question is.......does this lovely condition periodically improve so you think you are going into a remission of sorts only to return instantly? I am having a great last two days and could actually wear my normal shoes, but the weather has been very cool here, I am hoping it is going away forever and I can be pain free! :)

Neuropathy only gets worse, never better unless you use a medication and that's not a fix but a temporary thing.

You'll have good days and bad days like anything else arthritis etc, but the good days are few and far between and not toally absent of symptoms just milder. I really enjoy the mild days.
